This is one of my favorite RPG games of all time. It has a wonderful pixelart style as well as amazing classic RPG gameplay. I like that the game lets you choose to complete the game chapters in any order you wish- letting you make the game as easy or hard as you want. The game also has a good amount of optional side areas/caves and the postgame will keep the player occupied for many hours.

Easily around 200+ hours of continuous gameplay, this classic rpg isn't messing around. Feel like it's too easy, run past monsters to increase the difficulty of boss battles, or enable various options to tailor your experience, options like "easy enemies give no experience" or "townspeople tell lies" just to name a few. Now this game looks fantastic for a Switch game, although on other consoles you'll be able to get the prettier graphics. I'd say personally either PS4 or PC have the advantage there--- however the Switch has the option to play on the go, which was the main selling point to me. Being able to play that game lying down on the couch was a good feeling. Also the 2D segments are really perfect for handheld. So bottom line, do fantastic old-school JRPG ... MoreEasily around 200+ hours of continuous gameplay, this classic rpg isn't messing around. I really enjoyed the last which is why I purchased this one. Really happy with my decision. I purchased it on the switch though instead of the PS5 which I do regret as there is some slight frame rate drops during combat but it's barely noticeable. Overall still a 5/5

Excellent RPG Experience
5 June 2019

Im a lifelong video game player (in my late 30s) and I do not typically play turn-based RPGs. However, the graphics, music, story, combat system and multiple characters all combine to make Octopath Traveler a compelling piece worthy of your gaming hours. The combat system is easy to catch onto, the enemies come in several varieties, and you have the option to fight in a party or alone. The 8 characters involved also have their own stories and purposes for existing, with none feeling like a repeat of another. Finally, the graphics and music coalesce to produce an atmosphere found in few other games of any genre. Taken together, the team at Square Enix has produced a game that is a must-play for RPG fans and can only be classified as a Winner of a game.

Great JRPG game
7 August 2018

Haven't played a JRPG game in a while because there are so much reading. Octopath does have some reading through the stories but it does it in a very light reading kind of way.Turn-based battles takes a different path as the break system is system is very cool. You can break an enemy's turn if you strategize your attacks properly. Each enemy have their set of weaknesses your group can break to aid in stopping their attack in their turn. Each of the 8 characters (you can use 4 at a time) have different characteristics in town, different skills (while in combat), carry different weapons you can explore different group combinations to find one that suites you style.

Great story, beautiful views

This game was a LOT of fun. It was a long game, but you follow stories from eight different party members and each of the stories is really intriguing and makes you want to find out what happens next.Battle is old school turn based, but they throw in a mechanic where you can build up stronger attacks after each turn. The views are amazing - it's pixel graphics but the backdrops look fantastic. The music is captivating too. Each area and town has its own score and is very pleasant.I had a blast with this game.

Octopath Traveler is one of, if not the best RPG's on the Switch. The graphics while not realistic have a beautiful color palette and are more about subtlety than flash. That's not to say it doesn't show itself off because it certainly does. It just doesn't do it unnecessarily, only when it's appropriate. It's a lenthy RPG so you'll be getting yo your money's worth and then some. You could definitely replay it and switch up the order in which you find your various travelers. It plays like a late to mid 90's RPG like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy. Though it has a break mechanic all it's own. Basically hitting enemies with a weapon or magic that it's weak against will make the enemy dazed and nets you an extra turn. Learn this mechanic and do it well and enemies won't ... MoreOctopath Traveler is one of, if not the best RPG's on the Switch. Learn this mechanic and do it well and enemies won't get turns. That's not to sah it's easy to do because later enemies take more hits to get past their defense. It's eash to play but difficult to master. The music is on par with some of the best in gaming, it's that good. If you like SNES era games you'll love this one.

Play it!!
6 January 2019

What I initially thought to be a fun game to help tide me over to the autumn, actually became my favorite game of 2018 and one of my favorite RPGs ever! I love the polished look of SNES graphics similar to games like Chrono Trigger! It's nostalgic yet new at the same time. The gameplay, stories, and characters are all fantastic. And the music! I'd honestly say that this game is worth it for the OST alone! I sunk 95 hours into this game during the past summer on just the main story, and I'm not even a completionist. The demo on the Switch eShop was what got me hooked, later I purchased it at full price during launch. Absolutely no regrets!

Return to RPG style.
19 October 2021

It's a great return to classic Final Fantasy RPG games with the turn based fighting style. It's a large world to explore and there's random enemy encounters. There are eight different characters in the game, each with their own story. You are granted the ability to choose a single character to start with, who you choose at the start becomes your party leader, but you still encounter the others during the course of the game and see their stories. The problem with the game is that it does become redundant over time since the gameplay doesn't change at all, and the difficulty spikes quickly. In other words, you're going to be doing a lot of grinding between sections of the stories, so you're going to have to be patient with it.
