Nintendo Switch - Yoshi's Crafted World

Having played games in the Yoshi’s Island series all the way up to this point: this game is pretty much par the course for what you’d expect. What it gets right: The set design is great. Everything in the worlds you playin look like something you could create yourself! This game is very accessible and could be a good introduction to the series for younger or newer players. What it gets wrong: It’s a new coat of paint on gameplay that hasn’t really evolved across the series. It’s cool to see how the player can interact with a very “tactile” environment, but playing the game makes me want to play a game prior in the series rather than this one. The colors really pop and, even though the Switch isn’t the most graphically impressive console, the game looks very good. If you’re on the fence and have played prior games in the series it is a-okay to skip this one, though.

Adult here. (No shame whatsoever btw.) Been looking forward to a similar game as Yoshi’s Woolly World back in the WiiU days and here it is! It’s very similar cuteness and game play wise. The graphics are just adorbs! (Granted I still think knitted Yoshis are still cuter. =P) The theme of the game is as its namesake: Crafted. Graphics include washi tape, thumbtacks, cardboard and various craft supplies as deco. The controls are simple enough and don’t require crazy gamer experience. The levels have a high replay value. There are challenges that essentially make you replay levels multiple times to achieve different goals. There is a 2P mode, but it’s not as easy as you’d think it to be. This can get annoying especially since those eggs are necessary to hit targets in the distance to get red coins, etc. As with classic Yoshi games, you have to hunt for those red coins and flowers as they can be hidden. This really encourages the player to explore entire map and/or replay the level. The game is compatible with Switch console controllers, but Joy Con controllers work too. I of course scored my Yoshi controllers last year and played with those. All in all, I highly recommend this game, especially for Nintendo/Yoshi fans. The levels can get challenging and with its various challenges (collecting items and finding Poochi pups), the replay value is high in my opinion. Since it’s on the switch, this makes Yoshi even more portable. Enjoy guys and gals!

A lot of creative ideas are used in the levels and boss fights in regards to the crafting theme, though none of the ideas are used so extensively that you get tired of them. The controls are tight, but aiming has changed from previous games due to being able to aim and hit things in the foreground and background, and it takes some getting used to. The "flipside" levels are neat, but the idea is a little underdeveloped. The scavenger hunts in each level were fun too, but a more streamlined way that allowed you to find multiple items at the same time in a level would have been nice. I can't praise the music however, which is probably the worst aspect of the game since there is only one primary tune that is remixed for each level and it gets old fast and is disappointing. Overall a good game and a good addition to the Yoshi series, but a step down from Yoshi's Woolly World on the Wii U, which was better.
