I recently bought one of these Orbi mesh networks and they worked for less than an hour before becoming inaccessible. Turns out, their newer firmware doesn't work and it turns these into very expensive paperweights. If you want to justify that kind of price tag, especially in a time where so many people work from home and are dependent on stable and consistent network performance for their job, bricking their hardware through their own updates and not knowing how many days or weeks it's going to take them to fix them is unacceptable. Also, a supervisor said they'd call me back in an hour to follow up on this after we discussed replacement. That was almost two days ago, no call back. Avoid anything Netgear until they figure out how to do proper testing before releasing firmware to the public.

Let's cover the good...set up was easy. Didn't take me long to get it setup. Solid speed and a good amount of wired ports. This is my biggest issue with the system and something everyone should know before you purchase a Orbi mesh system....you can't force a device to connect to a specific satellite. This is close to being a fatal flaw for the system. The main Orbi comes up first and if something can connect it will no matter how solid the connection is. I have a Orbi satellite 2-feet from a TV in my bedroom with a Roku connected. The Roku connects to the main router and not the satellite. This causes buffering and poor video quality. The only way to fix this is to unplug the Roku and plug it back in. This will allow it to connect to the satellite instead of the main Orbi. But if the system runs a test or has to be restarted it reconnects to the main unit and you have to unplug the Roku again. Really a terrible design. It would be nice if just once these companies would trust its customers to setup the device to our own unique circumstances. This is a huge issue for me. It's upsetting because they were very close to making a great unit and fell on their face at the last second. Maybe they will make better software in a later version and allow us to permanently configure specific devices to connect to specific satellites.

Getting Wi-Fi speeds of 350 - 420 Mbps on a 1.2 GB paid plan was blazing fast. Don’t second guess the ability of getting what you pay for (both with the internet plan and the Wi-Fi router speeds). Save yourself from the ear punishment and non-stop nagging because lag caused the latest raid death. I certainly will not settle for mediocrity and in the future my first purchase will be a Netgear Orbi system. Thank you Netgear!

So, in hindsight I wish I had a 3 pack, but nonetheless, these are great products. I had been considering adding mesh products to my network for some time, so when they went on sale for the holidays I finally pounced. The app (once setup) has great visibility into all devices and network details, the coverage is great (I have the base in my living room right next to my ISP modem/router combo, and the satellite upstairs in my loft) in all areas of the house. Over Wifi, my laptops are pulling anywhere from 300-650 down, and around 50+ up. Even my really old laptop was seeing speeds in that upper range (with only Wireless N capabilities). Once they dropped the connection they wouldn’t reconnect. I tried booting those devices but never any success. I would go to network settings and try to reconnect but was always given some sort of error. If I rebooted the main Orbi 960 router, all devices would immediately start working again, for anywhere between hours and weeks but by 2 weeks there was always at least one device that would disconnect. I was told that it sounded like a DHCP issue but there are no real settings for setting lease timing etc. Incidentally I did express concern that if they can’t get it working then I need to be able to return it and they assured me as long as the case was open, no problem, if they can’t get it working then they will refund it. After about 4-5 months I exploded on them and finally was told I was being escalated to level 2 tech support. Over the period of 2 months I was asked over and over to upload more logs and screen captures etc. etc. etc., which I did exactly what they asked, but I never received any instruction calls or email on what to do to fix the issue. At about the 6-7 month point, and getting tired of my family screaming at me to deal with it, I have told Netgear I’m finished with it, I have boxed everything up and want to return it all. They agreed and told me it would be submitted for refund and because it was level 2, this is a done deal. I then purchased an Eero Pro 6E system using a total of 5 boxes for the mesh. The Orbi Tri-Band Mesh RBK753 is working great. The only issue that I had was the initial setup. I had to reset the Orbi router to factory settings 3 times. I believe that the setup issues was caused by my Xfinity modem turning on its WiFi antennas every time I restarted modem by following the Orbi setup instructions. I have the main Orbi router and 1 Satellite setup at opposite ends of my house and the 2nd satellite is located in my shop which is located about 150 feet from the main Orbi router. With that said I now have WiFi coverage on most of my property which is just under 1 acre.
I had used another whole house solution before changing over to Netgear Orbi, it was the ASUS Mesh system. ASUS worked amazingly and there was no trial for the network security (it was free for life) unlike Netgear Orbi has (30-day trial then pay). Unfortunately, the ASUS Mesh system after a firmware update broke and online support could not get it to restore. Long story there, I kept at it (resetting to factory default over and over again) and eventually it worked again. When I would do a speed test wired would show the expected 1GB but WiFi would only show half the speed expected. Called support again, they said it must be the internal antenna going bad. This second set did the same thing... that is a ton of money for something that is not working correctly. Yesterday, I installed/configured my Netgear Orbi system. I chose this system because I am a fan of the gaming and higher end network gear from Netgear for over 20 years (I work in IT) and after research on this mesh system there has been high praise reviews. I can only hope/pray that my experience with the Netgear Orbi will be as good as the years I have been able to depend reliably on Netgear products. So far, so good! This is covering my entire house (around 26K sqft, two floors, wood construction) with excellent WiFi signal strength.

Well I tried multiple versions of a mesh network. Linksys, Eero even Google and although they were good Orbi has truly set a standard for what Wi-Fi in the home should be like. The security is second to none. Something as simple as getting a notification when a device connects to your router is outstanding. Take it one set further and verify that your new device does not pose a threat to your current network or yourself and you have made me a customer for life. For the price not impressed. There is no way to control the frequencies and I have had problems with interference. I have never seen a router that does well auto selecting a clear frequency and this one is no different. To get rid of a basic control like chanel selection is a big problem for those of us who actually know how to set frequencies. If they wanted to get rid of that setting they should have ensured the auto channel selection would work properly. The number 1 issue of poor internet service is wireless frequency interference and as such this issue should have been addressed much better.
