I’m really disappointed. I always wear Merrell’s in a size 10. All the reviews I read said “true to size” this was my first pair of Moabs. Based on a very long discussion with a customer service rep I ordered 10 and 1/2. EH. Giant.Spoke with another rep. She said 9 and 1/2, but her supervisor said 10, EH again. Huge. Not just the toe box, the actual boot.I called and asked for 9 and 1/2’s.They are here and they are not just large in the toe box, but even with thick, hiking socks, I can’t tighten them enough where my ankle isn’t rolling. So, I guess the MOAB is not for me.Thanks to all 5 service reps and a supervisor.I have been a size 10 since 6th grade. These have issues. They are gorgeous and well made. I just can’t wear them.

My wife and I just used our Moab 3's to hike a portion of the Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain. The boots held up well, providing great traction in a variety of trail conditions from pavement to dusty roads to hiking over boulders, slag and scree. A couple of days of hiking in the rain as well and our feet stayed dry too. All in all, a great light hiking boot. I would only mark it down a 1/2 star if I could as the sole of the boot is a little too flexible when we were on the steeper descents on the most rocky sections of the trail. I felt the uneven terrain through the soles of my feet just a bit too much. So, if you are looking for a really technical heavy duty hiking boot, not sure that this is the one I'd recommend; however, for a boot that covers 90% of the ... MoreMy wife and I just used our Moab 3's to hike a portion of the Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain. We were carrying fairly light packs of about 20 lbs and averaging around 10 miles a day. I find Merrell's run true to size for me so I wore my regular size. My wife sized up a 1/2 size to allow for a thicker hiking sock and for any foot swelling during our hike.

I’ve been wearing Merrell, Columbia and some else hiking shoes for 8? years. I am a nurse and use them for work and would not change that until I tried on the Moab 3 hiking boots. When I put them on at the store I thought “Wow, these feel great! I bought them to actually hike and thought I should break them in before hiking. So, I’ve been wearing them to work and everywhere. They didn’t actually need to be broken in after all because they feel like they were made for MY feet. They feel just as comfortable after a 12 or 16 hour shift as when I put them on in the morning. Sometimes I think about how good they feel that I need to tell others how wonderful they are. People say, “well that’s great Mary. I’m glad you like them” . Bought my original Merrells about 15 yrs. ago and loved them. Unfortunately, I blew out both my hiking shoes and boots in the same year. Found these Moab 3 Gore-Tex and have started breaking them in. So far, I love these equally. I buy a size 6.5 for a little extra room for thick socks for winter hiking and shoeing. Yes, they run a smidge wide but this allows for those thick socks. Great design bring lots of compliments from others. I wear them biking, hiking, and working currently. So far, they grip well on snow, but like all shoes, slip on ice. Highly recommend!
I got these boots as a Christmas gift. It's been cold, so I have only taken them out twice since then. They're already coming apart at the sole, and today both laces finally snapped in half (which made the hike back to my car rather miserable). I've never had an issue with Merrell before, and I've been buying hiking boots from them for over a decade now. But these are garbage. I'm extremely upset that my siblings paid so much for these. They've seen maybe 10 miles total and are in bad shape. I've done nothing different from how I normally hike. I've had Merrell boots go hundreds of miles before showing signs of wear. Not sure if the company has gone downhill or I just got a crappy pair, but it's bad enough that I'm considering switching to a different company for ... MoreI got these boots as a Christmas gift. Not sure if the company has gone downhill or I just got a crappy pair, but it's bad enough that I'm considering switching to a different company for hiking boots. For comparison, my last boots lasted me from 2016 until fall 2022, when the sole started to give way, and I was hiking at least 5 miles a week (probably averaging closer to 8 miles a week) during those years. Only rating 2 stars because they are more comfortable than previous Merrell boots I've had. Just sucks that they haven't held up as long.
These are my boots after only three months, which is a little over 1000 miles on the Appalachian Trail. The missing toe section happened on the talus fields in the Shenandoah National Park. The rips on the right shoe finally happened after walking the rocky ridges of the Priest at night. Those tears on the left shoe are from Dragon’s Tooth. The burn marks are from the Smokies, when i had to walk for 3 miles in a trail that had turned into a stream and a cold snap froze my shoes solid. I put them by a fire to dry out - too close. The scuffs could be from all the summits in NC, like Mt. Albert in the rain. These boots have lived hard and while they might need to retire, if I do summit Katahdin, it’ll be in pair of Merrill’s.
I picked up 2 pairs of the Moab 3 Mid, one with Gore-Tex and one without. I had bought a cheaper pair of Merrell's at a discount store years ago and wasn't impressed, but my coworkers swore by the Moab and I decided to give them a try. So glad I did. These were purchased primarily for work, where work is mountain maintenance - dirt trails, erosion ditches, single-track courses, water run-off systems, rocky scrambles - I get through it all in a day. I get a lot of all-weather exposure, too; and sometimes it feels like I see all four seasons in 24 hours. But I'm putting in miles on pavement, mountainside, and at the office for the last few weeks and man, I love these boots. The pair with Gore-Tex are noticeably heavier in hand, but once they are laced up on my feet they don't feel heavy at all. Although I bought the two pair so that I could have hot day and wet day options, more often than not I just end up taking the waterproof ones out on the hill with me. It's so nice to not even have to think about soggy feet and where I'm stepping. I would recommend some upgraded insoles, but the boot itself is just an excellent piece of equipment, and I'm already thinking I will buy them again.Plus they're great-looking. I might have to grab the low-top for excursions into urban settings.
Comfortable straight off the bat. Purchased for an upcoming Himalayas trek; I put them straight on to "break them in" but they are a great fit straight away, perfectly warm and comfy. Zero issues and felt like I was walking on a cloud immediately. So far, amazing for standing on cold sidelines of kids winter sport...I did a fair bit of research of other recommended brands for Himalayan adventures and chose the Merrell from having a good prior experience with the brand and also, this shoe having such a good reputation on online forums. The final deciding factor was it being on sale.I took a chance and sized up a half size based on reading reviews of others experience with this shoe. The final deciding factor was it being on sale.I took a chance and sized up a half size based on reading reviews of others experience with this shoe. This seemed to have been a good choice as they fit me well when I'm wearing extremely thick woolly socks; I want to ensure I still have lots of room for toe spread when scampering up and down steep rocky trails. I can still wear a thin second pair of socks if needed. Despite sizing up, my heel still fits securely enough without lifting.I'm very happy and excited to wear these on my trip.
Now that I’ve well and truly tested my Merrell’s out, I can give a review. I wore these hiking boots on two 5 day hikes, ranging from 15-26kms each day. The terrain varied and included swampy and muddy forest paths, volcanic sand and rocky, high altitude terrain across Guatemala and Peru. Even with difficult terrain and long distances, my feet remained blister free (this is a big plus in my opinion), my feet were dry even after being submerged in water and mud, the boot had good grip and stability without feeling restrictive in rocky conditions. When hitting the higher kms (20km +) the boot did start to feel heavy and hot and I also find that I quite easily get rocks and grit getting captured into the boot. I have worn Moab Mids for something like 15 years, this was my 4th pair. I have loved these boots for their comfort and fit right out of the box, they have never caused blisters or hotspots, they were supportive and rugged but also lightweight, my absolute favorite boot. The design, however, seems to have changed and not for the better. I immediately noticed the new boots had a different shape than my old pair, but didn’t really think much of it. Unfortunately within just the first few steps of my hike I noticed an uncomfortable rubbing on the back of my ankles. After less than a mile a large blister had developed in the back of my right ankle and a smaller one was forming on the left. There is a very stiff, thick seam running on the inside of the ankle about 2 cm from the top of the boot which is what is causing the issue. I was able to finish my hike after applying bandaids and moleskin and I was hoping the seam would soften but it really hasn’t done so and it started rubbing on my ankle bones as well. It took me years to find boots that didn’t cause issues and now I’m going to have to go back to square one to find new boots, which is very frustrating, especially after the amount I spent on this new pair.
