Maui Jim Local Kine GM810-27M

i still have my prior pair of Bronze lens Maui Jim. Love them. they had a glass lens not poly and for some reason they are truer to life color. and slightly darker. the new pair of HCL bronze I am told is not a glass lens (and does have prescription) .... and they are brighter (less dark) and definately have a yellow tint my prior Bronze lens does not have. i definately preferr my prior Bronze glass lens but am told all prescription lens are in the hybrid not glass. other than that they are excellent thanks very much Robin. ps My daughter asked me for a pair of Maui Jim Starfish frame sunlasses. I'll have to figure out how to get her a pair . my best to you Robin

Almost perfect sunglasses!

It’s been a while since I purchased a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses but DesignerOptics.com, with their low price, convinced me to pull the trigger. As always, the optics are excellent! The outstanding quality is overwhelmingly evident. The only negative, for me personally, is that they feel a little heavier on my face. After several hours of wearing them, I’m having to tilt the ear pieces up a tad to relieve the weight a bit. Would I order them again? Most likely!

Frame quality on par with Oakley, lenses on par or better than Costa’s 580G. It’s a hybrid of the best of both

I purchased the soft black with Hawaii blue super thin glass lenses. These are very comfortable and while not heavy, have a great weight and feel of being quality made. I’ve owned 5 pairs of Oakley’s and a pair of Costa so that’s what I’ll be comparing these Local Kine to. As far as the quality of lenses these are very similar to the 580g from costa. The blue Hawaii lenses are great from full sun to overcast. I believe that these are the best on the market from my experience. The frame build is also much better than the costa’s. I would say that’s where Oakley shines is with the durability of frames, although their lenses suck; and these Maui Jim are right on par with the durable frame. My only criticism is the case could be a little more sturdy and ergonomic for a sporty frame like these. The case isn’t bad, it’s just not very functional for my lifestyle. I ended up buying a large brown sport case to compensate, which seems quality but I’ve only just gotten it yesterday. They fit great in the sport case by the way. On another note the soft black is very sticky. Anything and everything will stick to it, dust specifically. It’s a great material for sticking to your face though, and sticks even more when it’s wet, so as a primarily sporty frame I don’t mind it, but just be aware. Also I have a pretty small head and these fit me just about perfectly. All in all I would recommend this frame to someone who has an active lifestyle like myself, I cycle and run in these as well drive and just about everything else. I have very sensitive eyes so I’m always I’m wearing them. I haven’t seen many people since the pandemic started but I have already received compliments. I’d rate the whole set 9.5/10! And the half star is only deducted because of the tri-fold case, so it’s subjective. The glasses are great through, no complaints on the glasses.

Great comfort, good style. Readers could be better, though.

I had tried these on before, and knew they were good frames for me. I wanted to get a pair of readers, purely as a utility, so that I could, you know, read things if needed. As expected, the frames, in shiny black, fit perfectly. Comfort, fit, and style are all excellent. I returned them, however, because the reader lenses simply go up too high on the lens for my use. It seems like they sit just below the 50% line, so, if you look down just a bit, you see the haze of the reader lens. I would imagine, for most people, they want the readers merely as a utility, just in case they need to read a text, or a menu, or a parking meter, i.e., not to read a book. Great sunglasses

Many good things to say about these sunglasses. The lense, the weight, the coverage. Once in place they don't move. I always forget I have them on because they are so comfortable. Great to wear on bright sunny days and on cloudy days. Highly recommended.The only thing I dislike is the maroon color on the inside. It's such an ugly color. Would have been much nicer to go all black or with a grey. The maroon color is ugly and looks dated.Been wearing MJ for many years and always happy with the product.

Happy with my purchase

I love the Sunglasses. The lenses are crystal clear and the frames are exactly what I was looking for in terms of eliminating as much sun as possible from entering through the sides. The only complaint/disappointment I have is the nose contact area are not the most comfortable and they tend to slide down my nose when active. I primarily use them for ocean fishing and I found that when I'm fighting a fish, I had to often reach up with one hand to push the frames back into position. Luckily I was only catching striped bass, but when I head out for Tuna next year, this might be a problem. I'm going to have to find a solution to this, maybe adhesive nose pads that can be placed on that area of the frames. Overall, very happy with the performance aspect of the glasses.

Local Kine......Kinda Disappointed

Major disappointment to my suprise. I have 3 pairs of MJ's and I simply praise them all. I was excited about trying the newer style Local Kine. Upon arrival, I knew something was wrong right out of the box. Maui Jim decided to go cheap on the carry case. No longer the traditional, time tested and sturdy clam shell style case which are basically bullet proof. Now, they only offer a softer and cheaper style tri-fold case which you can basically crush in your hand with little effort. Second, the Local Kine have plastic lenses and the frame is fragile and beyond lightweight. The Local Kine sunglasses are a serious diversion from the traditional and standard Maui Jim's that have sturdy frames and glass lenses which make them fit and feel like awesome. Love my Local Kine Sunglasses

I have the Local Kine with the Black Lenses. I really like them. I can't wear cheap sunglasses because they either give me a headache or make me dizzy. These are perfect. Very light weight compared to the other Maui Jims I own. I may get another pair in either the blue or green lenses. I saw in some reviews the complaint about the foldable case. I actually like that. I carry a small purse and I can finally put my sunglass case in it or in my back pocket. Considering the cost of these sunglasses, I am very careful with them anyway. I still have my pouch/cleaning cloth from my other pair of sunglasses so I just use that one, but the cloth that comes with these is a nice size. Can't go wrong with these. Perfect

Tried several models of Maui Jims before finding Local Kine. Loved them all but these are perfect for my needs, wearing all day while fishing offshore in South Florida. I already own a few pairs that I wear for different things, and I've learned that the SuperThin glass has the best clarity but is usually heavy for all day wear when set in the full size frames. This model has glass lenses but a lightweight frame that makes it as comfortable as any of the rimless models I own. Perfect fit for my face, giving excellent coverage while not being too large, I would call them perfect for a Medium-Large face/head. The Blue Hawaii color, which I tried while choosing between models, looks really cool and stylish but definitely does not filter out light like the neutral gray. Tends to put a gold-ish hue on things. I might prefer Blue Hawaii on an overcast day or when barhopping on Hollywood Beach but when things are serious while fishing under that bright unforgiving South Florida sun the neutral gray is the lens to have. Just my humble opinion. As usual the quality of MJ sunglasses is without comparison, you can keep "that other popular" brand...

unhappy, disappointed, and frustrated customer

These are not the Maui Jim glasses that I am used to wearing! I don't like the new styles and I can't get lenses for my older frames! So, you have a customer who has been wearing Maui Jim Sunglasses for about 35 years.My evaluation is your catering to the younger generation only and loyal customers you don't care about!!Ken Pope
