Expensive. Outstanding.

I have worked for decades professionally with personal computers, Windows, Linux and Apple. The M2 Ultra Mac Studio is absurdly expensive and represents overkill for 90% of users. But if you want the most powerful desktop personal computer on the market today, this is it. Mine has the M2 Ultra with fewer GPU cores, but 128GB of memory and 4TB of SSD. I have 2Gig internet service and the 10Gig ethernet port on the back of this little box sees every bit of it (with the right switches and router). There is no reason to buy this computer unless you are a) a professional video editor working on a Marvel movie, b) mining bitcoin (in which case there are cheaper alternatives), c) A gaming fanatic, in which case you can probably do better with a Windows PC and a couple of ... MoreI have worked for decades professionally with personal computers, Windows, Linux and Apple. I.E., the M2 is what the M1 was supposed to be. Most people won't be able to tell them apart. No matter how hard you push it, the fans essentially never become audible. I can't imagine that I will need another computer for many years no matter what they come out with. This is the best computer I have ever used (out of many), but it is very expensive.

Great in Many Respects, But Not Perfect
8 May 2024

This is my 8th Mac OS workstation over 20+ years as a full-time After Effects artist, so I thought I'd weigh in here after 4 months of daily use. Overall, I am pleased with this machine, but not floored by it. The processor is great, coming from a 10th-gen Intel i9 processor, I get modest but noticeable speed improvements for most tasks in After Effects, and dramatic improvements for things like ProRes transcodes. I find the M2 Max the right mix of value and performance. If you are not trying to extract maximum profit from your hardware, you will surely enjoy having a the Ultra chip, but I think the Max is the sweet spot for value. The insanely costly non-upgradeable RAM is the low point for this product. I got 64 GB and it is barely, barely adequate for my workflow, often seems to be the limiting factor for this machine’s speed, and will assuredly be the limiting factor in this machine’s service life. The form factor is wonderful. It is small and near-silent and generally a great desk companion. The port configuration is...serviceable. The ports seems ample on paper but in practice they go fast– remember, those TB4 ports are also your monitor ports. I had to add a Thunderbolt hub and am using the USB hubs on both my monitors to get my full array of peripherals going. Speaking of monitors, multi-display integration is surprisingly wonky. I run two monitors and a Wacom Cintiq, and my applications windows will re-scale and move from display to display as the machine sleeps, which is not something I have ever experienced on a Mac before. The non-upgradeable internal storage is the other really problematic thing here for video postproduction workflows. The onboard storage is very very fast– far and away the fastest drive I have ever owned. Blackmagic Disk Test clocks it at a staggering 6400MB/s write! It’s great to work off of, but it’s also the system drive and is not readily replaceable if it fails, so I am loathe to be writing untold gigabytes of data to it every day. I opted to use external drives for bulk footage storage and scratch. Thunderbolt allows for very very quick connectivity, but integration is surprisingly wonky. I get disk ejection errors all the time. MacOS insists on scanning everything to make it searchable meaning that it is constantly poking around your footage drives, wasting processor cycles and preventing smooth unmounting. Occasionally the machine will fail to re-mount an external, and then my scratch drives need to be reset in After Effects. The want of a lowly onboard m.2 slot or two also cuts deep into the value proposition here. I spent a quick $700 on a TB4 hub and USB4 m.2 enclosures after buying this to solve my storage needs– and it still doesn’t work quite right.Overall, this machine is good, though no home-run, hamstrung by design decisions and an operating system increasingly focused on making the desktop experience more phone-like. All that said, I feel it represents a respectable value in a pro-grade workstation, which is not something you could say about any Apple machine for over a decade, so bravo to Apple for that. If you need big processor capacity, need ports, and want Mac OS, the Mac Studio offers a fine choice.

I love my Mac Studio M2 max
25 February 2024

After a lot of research and using Windows PCs for more than 30 years, I decided to get the Mac Studio M2 Max to help me with the videos I create using DaVinci Resolve. Really glad I did. I get really vivid tones and smooth renderings done extremely fast. The price was about half what a PC would have cost that had similar (or probbaly a bit less) features and speed. Everything downloads and works faster -- much, much faster -- on this machine. The learning curve was a bit difficult but Apple answered questions I had and the Net is full of helpful videos. The most problematic part is of my own doing, in that I like my ergonomic Logitech keyboard, which is not an Apple keyboard, so I have had to learn to transpose the Apple keyboard shortcuts on it. I highly recommend this computer for anyone doing video editing and photos.

My first Mac

I have been an IT professional for 2 decades, and barely touched Mac's over the years. I am also an amateur audio engineer, so I have known forever that Mac's are better for audio, but being a windows user, the high cost of a 'second' machine was prohibitive for me, until recently in my life. I choose the base Mac Studio M2 Max and couldn't be happier. An Ableton Live project that would have my very powerful windows machine chugging along at 50-60% usage, I was able to run on my Mac, at half the buffer size I use on my windows machine (means twice as hard to run basically), and it barely tickles 10% usage. Those dual Audio encoders are brilliant. Seems like I saw a decrease in latency through the whole system as well, but that could just be me.Like I said, I have ... MoreI have been an IT professional for 2 decades, and barely touched Mac's over the years. I am very impressed.I would still say it's a little overpriced for what it is, (I caught a sale that had it at 1799) but I am very happy with my purchase. It works like a charm. Also, it looks amazing in my setup.

Seriously nice box, this from a "Windows" guy.
29 December 2023

So I should start off that I am primarily a Windows guy, but I keep everything on my desk (Windows, Linux, Mac). I am a developer so for me I look at computers as tools in a toolbox. Right tool for the job. After making the horrible iMac purchase in 2020 buying what I swear is the only iMac that couldn't be upgraded without disassembling the entire box, I opted to go with more power from the get go. And man this thing does not dissapoint. Smooth and fast response, super fast compiles on xCode and I have even moved doing a lot of my graphics tasks from Windows boxes to the studio. As far as looks go, probably the cleanest design out there for a high end box. A little back and forth between the two boxes at the beginning, then sit back and it handled everything. By far the smoothest upgrade and transfer I have ever encountered. The one thing that I found odd, was for such a high end box, no mouse or keyboard included. I know most people have their own they are attached to, but even including something basic would have been nice.Other than using it for compiling apps, was never really a Mac fan, but I have to say this box may win me over.

The Quintessential Creator Studio

I'm a composer, producer, songwriter and content creator in Los Angeles, CA. My 2018 Intel Mac Mini was not cutting it, I frequently was seeing the wheel of death and it was just not capable of processing fast enough for my workflow. I upgraded to the Mac Mini M2 Max, 64GB RAM. This was exactly what I needed.Migration Assistant did NOT give me problems, despite what many nerds on forums say. I went from 12.7 to 14.2 (Sonoma) and although the jump was a headache and required lots of troubleshooting - almost everything is compatible. You MAY have to uninstall/reinstall, upgrade, etc a few things. The newest OS didn't present problems neither did the M2 chip. You MAY have to uninstall/reinstall, upgrade, etc a few things. The newest OS didn't present problems neither did the M2 chip. The M2 and M1 essentially have near identical compatibility so things that work on the M1 almost always work on the M2. They have figured out the issues so most 3rd party plugins are good to go as well as Native Instruments, Logic stock, Heavyocity, Spitfire, Cinema Studio Strings, Klevgrand, and pretty much everything I have. No, you don't have to move everything manually. You WILL absolutely have to spend 1-3 days updating and fixing things, especially if you have lots of music plug ins. But this is pretty much unavoidable. So plan for this. The upgrade is well worth it. You will save time and energy and this thing is totally equipped to handle professional workflows for audio and video editing. If you're doing heavy video editing - the ultra is a better choice, but if you're mostly audio production with some video editing needs - this is what you need. The ultra upgrade benefits video processing, so don't waste money getting it thinking it will make your music workflow faster. This is the one you want.

The things I didn't think about
2 April 2024

Looks nice, takes up little counter space and then you start to adding your accessories; haha. Your desk will still look like a spider and the additional accessories add up if you are using it for Digital media/photography. If you have a neat desktop area please send me a picture for ideas. What I didn't think about! The plan was to move away from my laptop as everyday use and use the STUDIO primarily. I already had an extra monitor, so that was a plus in purchasing the STUDIO.
