I was looking for a bag that would carry my photo gear, but also have a place to carry a few extras like gloves, a hat, snacks for the trail, a first aid kit, flashlight etc. I had looked at other bags that offered a separate space for extra gear, but for myriad reasons, never felt those met all my needs. Enter the new Flipside Trek series of bags. They appeared to meet my needs beautifully, so, after a bit of research, I purchased the BP 450 to give it a try.I've had the bag for several months now, and have used it on multiple photo treks into the woods in and around my home state of Kentucky.I carry a full frame DSLR with a battery grip and a 24-105 f4 attached, a 70-200 f2.8, a 16-35 f4, and a 100 macro, along with various filters, release chords, cleaning ... MoreI was looking for a bag that would carry my photo gear, but also have a place to carry a few extras like gloves, a hat, snacks for the trail, a first aid kit, flashlight etc. I had looked at other bags that offered a separate space for extra gear, but for myriad reasons, never felt those met all my needs. It has ample room for my equipment as well as trail essentials. My only criticism is that my camera with battery grip and L bracket are a bit of a tight squeeze that causes a slight bulge in the back of the pack where it touches my shoulder blade. While noticeable, this hasn't proven to be uncomfortable however. The padding on the back keeps things from gouging into my back and the strap system carries the load with relative ease. The adjustments available on the shoulder straps, hip belt, and sternum strap allow me to fit the pack to my torso comfortably enough to hike for hours without discomfort. A feature of the sternum strap that I found to be particularly helpful is that it can be fastened with just one hand. This came in handy on more than one occasion when only having one hand free. While not a huge feature, it shows the attention to small details that Lowepro considered when designing the pack with an outdoor photographer in mind. The Flipside design keeps the straps/back of the pack clean and off the ground when needing to get to my gear. On one weekend adventure, it rained, at times quite heavily. The pack kept my gear safe and dry, and when it really poured, the rain fly was easily accessible and quick to install. The material of the pack seems to shed dirt easily enough and after a weekend in the outdoors, a wipe down with a damp cloth returns the bag to looking near new. The construction of the pack is durable and typical of other Lowepro products. I believe I will get several years worth of wear out of this well made bag.Overall, I am quite pleased with my choice, and will recommend others needing a pack that comfortably carries not only their photo gear, but other outdoor/hiking essentials comfortably and safely along with them, give the Lowepro Flipside series a serious look.

As a long time Lowepro bag owner I've been on the hunt for the perfect everyday bag to carry. I own the Flipside 300, Ridgeline Pro BP 300 AW, ProTactic 450 AW and the Whistler 450 AW II. All have their strengths but they all also have their fair share of weaknesses. The Flipside 300 was simply too small and not enough separate compartments. The Ridgeline Pro BP 300 AW isn't a true camera bag, but rather a backpack that could be utilized as one in a pinch, say during a day conference, etc. The ProTactic 450 AW was okay but the dividers never seemed to want to keep things in the compartment where I'd left them. Items that I stored in the top compartment would be in the bottom compartment, etc and it wasn't the most comfortable to wear. Items that I stored in the top compartment would be in the bottom compartment, etc and it wasn't the most comfortable to wear. Then there is the Whistler 450 AW, it's honestly one of my favorite bags I've ever used. Love the color scheme, small enough to be used as a carry-on on a plane yet big enough to fit EVERYTHING that I need to cover a full day wedding. But because it could fit SO MUCH I always felt obligated to pack more because the bag had the space. Making the bag a back breaking 38lbs while hiking. I needed something that was small enough to travel with easily yet still had the right ratio of compartment and separate storage. Something that wouldn't be overkill for my new Z7. This is where the Flipside Trek BP 350 AW comes in! It has been amazing. I can throw the Z7 with a grip, 2 batteries, a pouch of filters, an iPad, a travel tripod, a water bottle, a 24-70mm, a 14-24mm, an 85mm, memories cards, etc and only have to carry this tiny, compact bag around! For everything from a quick family session, to 20 miles of hiking during a weekend camping trip, this bag is my go-to now. Absolutely love it! My only complaint is that I really wish it had a 15 laptop sleeve built into it like how the Whistler 450 does. It would make this bag absolutely perfect in my eyes. Lowepro knocked this one out of the park. Highly recommend!

I am 62 and have had a hard time finding a camera backpack that is tall enough for me so that most all of the weight can be carried at the hips through internal stays and not too bulky. The stiff camera compartment acts as the stays to transfer the weight to the hips. This bag carries comfortably on me. I just hiked 9 miles with it fully loaded with over 20 pounds of gear at Arches National Park and it worked out great. I can carry my Nikon d810 with the Tamron 24-70mm attached, Nikon 16-35mm, Tamron 70-200mm and the Rokinon 14mm all in the camera compartment. Its a little tight but it keeps things from moving around. I can keep the lens hood mounted backwards on my 70-200mm lens but not enough room to do that on the other lenses so the hoods go in the top ... MoreI am 62 and have had a hard time finding a camera backpack that is tall enough for me so that most all of the weight can be carried at the hips through internal stays and not too bulky. My filters can be put in the top compartment as well or attached to one of the straps on the outside. I can fit my lunch in the top compartment also. I can fit a rain shell in the front compartment but not much else room for anything else. I wish that area was a little bigger and I wish it had a dedicated water bladder pocket on the side but I was able to put my water bladder in one of the side pockets and it worked out OK. I was concerned that this bag would be a little too small so I orderd the Mindshift Gear Backlight 36l. It is a little bigger and bulkier and has the same type of back side access. Its a good back pack but a little too bulky for me right now and it was not as comfortable to wear. Even though the padding on the Lowepro is thin it is very comfortable to wear, more so than the Mindshift with the thick padding. Im sending the Mindshift back. I may still get the Mindshift later if I buy another large telephoto lens and a bigger and heavier tripod.

LowePro fan here- have a 16 year old Orion Trekker that's still 100% solid in stitching and functionality. However, needed more storage and tripod/H2O bottle accommodations. Flip feature seemed interesting at first, but in use, it is absolutely fantastic for me. Wouldn't buy another pack without this function now. If you've ever been pushed/pulled down the trail hiking with non-photographers, you'll appreciate how this slick feature allows you to much more quickly grab a shot. With conventional packs, I felt I often overlooked a good image, as I just didn't want to go through the on/off routine with the pack. Glad that's no longer the case! Even holds compact tripod and secured water bottle as I sweep around to pull the camera. Even holds compact tripod and secured water bottle as I sweep around to pull the camera. It's like having a desk top on your hip, with access to all your lenses. Hard to imagine anything more convenient. Shell is internally and externally supported with firm padding. When unloaded, holds it's shape, just like the product image, and when loaded, this contributes to a feeling of control of the gear, vs a floppy canvas bag. Color is good in that it does not show dirt/dust as much, nor collect heat as much as common black material. Ideal design for the way I use it, which is mountain biking, hiking, and occasionally skiing. Hip belt is verycomfortable, contributes to proper weight distribution for comfort, and the padded breathable shoulder straps and back pads are wonderful. No more urge to rush to end of trail to dump an uncomfortable pack. This one just feels great, so I'm able to enjoy seeing images rather than fighting equipment and discomfort. Contributes greatly to the enjoyment of getting out and soaking up the outdoors the way I like to, and every bit of gear I own on hand! Based on my first LowePro pack's performance, I'm confident I'll enjoy this one for many years to come. Very happy - well worth the reasonable cost. Tempted to go cheaper, thrilled that I stuck with the original. Thank you, LowePro!
I did lots of research years ago before purchasing this bag at double the price you can get it today. My criteria included: the bag must be light to begin with, it should have a compartment on top for passports, accessories, drone or headset and all items must be easily accessible whether on a hike or before placing the bag in an overhead. The main compartment should have enough space for my Canon Mark IV (now the R5) and three lenses, flash and filters. I also needed to fit my MacBook Pro 13 (now 14) and an 11 iPad. Everything fits perfectly and there is so much room for other accessories. There is also a rain cover built in. That's why I needed a bag that was light. I've seen other bags from Lowepro that are larger and maybe look better and invite you to load it with lots of gear! If you are in great shape and want to travel with lots of gear on your back- go for it. Otherwise- this is a great backpack for both mirrorless and regular DSLR.
I give up on photo bags. I do a lot of hiking and long day hikes to take pictures. I've tried so many bags and this was supposed to be the answer to all my previous issues of long hikes with camera gear. It's not. This bag is of good quality and does a good job organizing photography gear, but it's weak as a hiking backpack. It doesn't hold much personal/hiking gear like jackets, food, rain protection and other gear. And the lack of any kind of frame/suspension means it poorly supports the weight. It's only good for hikes where your camera gear is all you need. I will be switching to a dedicated Gregory 40-50L hiking bag and using a LowePro GearUp cube for the camera and a couple accessory bags for the associated camera gear. The Gregory bag can is more versatile than an F-stop anyway and can be used without any camera gear when I want to just hike.
This is my new favorite bag (Flipside Trek BP 450) for a full frame photography day hike/outing. I currently have the Pro Tactic which is certainly a more robust bag that holds more gear. I would recommend that bag for someone carrying more stuff like a hybrid shooter or a photography professional. You can toss that bag around and you have way more room for more gear, but it is heavy. That bag empty without gear is heavy and bulky and not what I want on my back hiking/traveling. I am 6-1 and this is the sweet spot in bag size for me.This bag is more meant for travel/outdoor photography. I regularly carry this 5-10 miles to a distant location such as a waterfall, rock formation, etc and it brings all my gear with a little room for the other items you need.I can hold a Sony Full Frame Holy Trinity Zoom Kit (16-35 f2.8, 24-100 f4 and 100-400 f4-5.6 with Teleconverter/lens hoods + full Lee filter set + batteries + tripod using only the camera/lens section of the bag. Getting the 24-70 in there would be tight but you could do it. With this set up, the other areas of the bag are open for your non-photo gear or specialty item.I can also hold a full astro, night photo or light painting kit in this bag. This bag is to large for street photography or a micro 4/3 set up. I use a Lowepro ViewPoint BP 250 for a small gear day. I like that the bag is green, looks more like e hiking day pack. The rain cover is nice but would have preferred it on the bottom. The flipside feature will combine handy the rare time you are walking a stream or in the mud and want to switch a lens, but any other time you will take the bag off like normal. I think the buckles will break at some point and I will replace them with normal ones when that happens.
I own several Lowepro items and this bag has the same excellent quality with all the small details incorporated (grab handle, zipper pulls, interior pockets, waist belt pockets). The zippers are smooth and easy unlike other bags I've tried with rubberized zippers that are a pain to zip. I've configured the interior to hold my 5D III (with L bracket), 70-200 2.8, 24-70 II, and my 16-35. If my 70-200 is attached, I just swing the Velcro divider over to the side like in the attached photo. I store the lens hoods in the upper compartment along with spare batteries, memory cards, shutter release, etc. Often I tuck my Black Rapid strap in the small open slot (see photos). I could add a Speedlite or another lens but I like to leave some working room to change lens. For non-photo gear, I can carry a sweatshirt or light jacket, a few snacks, a small first-aid kit, a small survival kit, a handheld GPS (clipped to the outside or in the pocket), and a couple of water bottles on the sides. I could also slide in my 9 tablet if I wanted to. This bag holds everything I need for a day long trek where I won't be spending the night out. The bag is well loaded down and with the waist straps, which I'd say carries about 80% of the weight, this bag is a real breeze to carry heavy gear all day long without any shoulder fatigue. The waist strap alone makes this my new favorite bag. I don't do the flip routine much where I swing the bag around and access my gear while it is still attached to my waist. It's easy to swing it around and pull out your gear, but with a bag this size and the weight of your gear it's very difficult to zip the compartment closed. (With my Flipside 300, the flip works very well.) I almost went with the smaller 350 model wanting a bit smaller profile but I'm glad I didn't. Unless you are shooting with a mirrorless system, go with the larger 450. It's better to have a little extra room than be short on space. The drab green and gray color is perfect, pleasant and subdue. Anything louder or bright I wouldn't even consider it. One suggestion to Lowepro: Add a couple of loops or some webbing to the bottom of the pack so you can attach a tripod; otherwise this is perfect bag for a day long outing. Yes you can carry a small flimsy tripod on the side but if the bag is designed for DSLRs then we are going to be using a much larger and sturdier tripod.
This backpack has the right balance of hiking gear and space for mirrorless camera system that includes body and 2-3 lenses. My favorite part of this bag is the opening to access the camera equipment. The opening is about half the height of the bag, which is perfect for a smaller camera system or when you mostly pull out your camera with lens. I like that you don't unzip the entire back of the bag. And then the top section has lots of room for miscellaneous equipment - hat, gloves, microspikes, balaclava, food, another tripod head, etc. Plus you have the front section for more supplies. When you don't need a huge 30-70 liter bag for camping/multi-day hikes, this has worked well to be light but have enough room for everything thing you need for day hikes, both warm ... MoreThis backpack has the right balance of hiking gear and space for mirrorless camera system that includes body and 2-3 lenses. The only somewhat down side is that for a 6 ft 2 in tall person, it can feel a little small for a regular backpack, as I found it wanting to rest at the top of your hips rather than the middle when you have a heavy load and tighten the shoulder and waist straps. But, I'll take that infrequent inconvenience over having a huge bag for not much gear.
I gave this 5 stars for quality and comfort. After reading lots of reviews, and trying to determine what size I needed, I ordered the 350. However, after trying it out for a week, I realized I need the 450. I carry a Sony a7iii with either a Canon 70-200 attached, or a Canon 24-105, using a Metabones connection which adds a little more length. This bag just doesn't have that much space in the camera area.Pluses: seems durable, comfortable to wear, easy to access the rain cover (needed it when it started to hail in Colorado!).
