With the Linksys MR8300, you can be sure that the entire household has access to a fast wireless network. The router has 3 separate WiFi bands, so your network is always stable. Thanks to MU-MIMO, the router sets up multiple connections at the same time. This ensures that your network connection doesn't slow when multiple roommates simultaneously stream 4K wirelessly or play online games. You can give important devices a higher priority in the portal. With the parental controls on this router, you can shield child-unfriendly websites or create a separate WiFi hotspot, so that guests can't access your NAS. Connect network devices without WiFi to 1 of the 4 network ports. You can easily configure the router using the Linksys app.

This Linksys router has MAX-STREAM, which provides two dedicated Wi-Fi bands with combined speeds of up to 2.6 Gbps on two bands and up to 5.0 gigahertz on the other two, so gaming performance was greatly improved. With four streams of data and the latest Wireless-AC technology, MU-MIMO video buffering is a thing of the past. I know I am getting the most up-to-date technology with this router. The router was very simple to put together. The four antennas are adjustable for maximum signal strength throughout your home. The instruction user manual is very easy to read and follow. You can even set this router with Alexa. I just wish I had done this a long time ago.

The Linksys MR8300 AC2200 Mesh Wi-Fi Router is the latest router in Linksys's impressive lineup of products. It's an MU-MIMO, high-performance router that provides the home with impressive Wi-Fi coverage allowing for impressive speeds that will handle any task, whether it be for streaming or gaming. It comes with four external antennas and with its beamforming technology and quad-core processor, it is certainly no slouch. It's also a tri-band router, so with three Wi-Fi bands broadcasting simultaneously, you won't have to worry about devices crowding the Wi-Fi.As a full disclosure, I’d like to say here that I reviewed this product on behalf of the Linksys Friends and Family program. The testing set came with the router itself along with the Linksys Velop Mesh Wi-Fi extender, an easy-to-use Velop node that helps expand coverage. As part of the testing, I was asked to test the router with the following Wi-Fi extender, so my testing reflects results with both products.Upon opening the router, it seems pretty straightforward. The contents included the router itself, an instruction booklet for quick setup, an Ethernet cable, and an AC adapter. The antennas for the router are not detachable, but they are fold-able for easy collapsing. The AC adapter is nice as well. Its main part isn’t really bulky, so it doesn’t take up a lot of space on a power strip.Setting up the devices was pretty straightforward. All of it was done through the Linksys Smartphone App, which is a bit of a bummer if you don’t have a smartphone. Nevertheless, setting up through the app was rather painless and easy, though it took some time after connecting to the router, waiting for the light to turn solid blue.My testing location is a 2200 square foot house with two floors and a fair number of rooms, so there’s plenty of walls to overcome. I’ve tested it with three devices, all smartphones with 802.11 AC capable Wi-Fi. Using Ookla Speedtest as a rough measurement, the results were very impressive. As a whole, the router averaged around 100.97 Mbps download and 51.83 Mbps upload. When testing up close, the tests showcased an maximum speed of 220 Mbps download and 109 Mbps upload. That was certainly beyond my expectations.Despite the results, the router wasn’t exactly able to reach all parts of the house. On the second floor at the point farthest away from the router, two devices were not able to connect to the router for a speed test, while one device managed to achieve a download speed of 2.25 Mbps and an upload speed of 1.28 Mbps. In terms of signal strength, at this troublesome corner, it varied from -74 dB to -81 dB depending on the wireless band. These results improved dramatically with activation of the included Wi-Fi extender. Upon activation, running the same tests again, I’ve achieved a download speed of 95.6 Mbps and an upload speed of 46.7 Mbps in the best case. Roughly speaking, with the Wi-Fi extender, I’m achieving a speed improvement averaging around 39x what it was without the extender. As a result of testing, the Linksys MR8300 router certainly exceeded my expectations. With an easy setup procedure and a decent range, it was more than capable of providing sufficient Wi-Fi speeds for most of my household. When used in conjunction with the Linksys Wi-Fi extender, the coverage became undoubtedly stronger in the problematic areas. Overall, I highly recommend both the router and the extender for any household.

Again, no glitches with Linksys. There are no complaints. Even the "guest' network was off, by default. It appears that this modem services multiple devices, on separate bandwidths, automatically. What a great leap in wifi, or have I been too trusting with an out of date modem supplied by my vendor? Probably so.If I have learned anything from this process, is I COMPLETELY recommend cutting cable, buying the Linksys Max Stream AC2200 Tri Band Wifi Router (EA8300) ONLY if you have a wired connection to your Fios. If you were lucky enough to have an ethernet connection option to your Fios, then this Linksys AC2200 is for YOU!!!

The Box & specs say the Wi-Fi has a 2000 square feet range! ( Did test this as much as possible & it’s Super Far! (Farthest I’ve ever seen so far!)It has 4 Cat-5 connection ports with WI-FI also. It also will let you connect 20+ Devices! It has a USB Port also on the back so that you can share files on your Network. The entire router is configurable so you can switch your Network name, Passwords, etc. . Along with even a GUEST Access on your Wi-Fi–Once you connect online the easy Setup menu will let you configure all kinds of stuff if your one of the technical people, if not, it pretty much works out of the box as soon as you activate it online. (The Router Passwords to the Network it Defaults at are in your QuickStart guide)It has two 5GHz bands and one 2.4GHz band, which top out at speeds of only 867 Mbps and 400 Mbps. (Most devices won't reach those speeds anyway since environmental factors make all signals change time to time.)The band steering option is nice as well, allowing the router to choose the best band for optimal performance. If you disable band-steering, you can customize the channel, channel width and network mode (802.11ac only, 802.11n only, and so on).All in All, I couldn’t find anything I disliked about the Router! After almost a week I’m still playing around with some of the features but I LOVE IT!

Great Mesh Router
2 May 2020

Setup: 5/5I just got through replacing my old Linksys EA7500 router with my new MR8300 mesh router with two Velop tri-band nodes. I used the desktop Smart WiFi app (on Chrome) to configure and administer the router, and I used (no choice) the Smart WiFi mobile app on an iPhone 7 Plus to install the nodes. It's an easy setup if you are building a brand new WiFi network. But if you are upgrading an existing non-mesh WiFi network, and want to use the same network name, passwords, and connected devices, you WILL have to reconnect the devices to the new mesh network, as otherwise, your devices will be looking for the router for a signal as opposed to looking for the best signal provided by the additional nodes installed in your mesh network. Also, some devices wouldn't connect at all unless I manually reconnected them to the new mesh network. Not that big of a deal, but it takes a little extra time to reconnect all of your devices...about an hour or so spanning 31 devices.Range: 5/5The range of the MR8300 is definitely better than the EA7500. And using Velop tri-band nodes with the MR8300 is definitely better than using an RE7000 range extender with my old EA7500 router. My goal was not only to blanket high-speed WiFi signal inside of my small ranch home and basement, but to also have high-speed WiFi access in my detached garage, which I accomplished with my new setup. Bear in mind that my detached garage sits to the west of my home, and where my new mesh router is situated just inside the northeast outer corner walls of my home. I placed one Velop tri-band node in my living room (center of the house), and the other node inside of my garage...no problems whatsoever throughout the house and basement, and I have great WiFi speed in the garage.Reliability: Unknown (5/5?)While I cannot provide a proper reliability review since the unit is still brand new for me, if it's as reliable as the EA7500 was, I will also give the new MR8300 a 5-star reliability review as well. In the short time I have used it however, it has functioned extremely well.Administration Tools: 3/5My biggest beef with Linksys has to do with their admin tools. I am not a fan of mobile WiFi administration, and prefer the old school desktop administration tools personally. Luckily with the MR8300, while Linksys encourages you to setup your router with the mobile app, you CAN still accomplish this with the desktop app. Where you will have NO choice but to use the mobile app however, is connecting a Velop node to the router. It's easy to do no doubt, but all WiFi administration should be accessible via a desktop browser. Moreover, after many years, Linksys has STILL not updated their connected device icon list, nor can you upload your own to the admin tool. In the year 2020, device icons for blu-ray/4K players, smart watches, remote control hubs, streaming devices, audio/video receivers, and much more, should be available to choose from in my connected device list. Out of my 31 WiFi connected devices, about half of them have "generic device" icons associated with them...that's ugly.Overall 4.5/5On the whole, I am very satisfied with my new MR8300 mesh router. If you are looking to upgrade to a new mesh WiFi network, you won't be disappointed with this unit.*Note* My MR8300 did NOT come with a plug-in Velop, dual-band node. Previous reviewers of this device reported that their routers DID come with one of these plug-in Velop nodes. Not that it matters to me, as my separately purchased Velop tri-band nodes provide better speed for my WiFi network, but someone else may need to save the up front cost initially.

It's long in the waiting for Router mfgs. to finally realize this absolute need to Build-in these much needed Gigabit ports which allows additional hardware like printers, computers, other networks and even additional Routers to massively expand your network to whatever depth and breadth your mind desires to take you...or your budget dictates.Expand your networks, your business, limited only by your budget and desire.General Note: All the product evaluations were done at 433 Mbps ISP linkage at 2.4GHz& 5GHz IPv4 & IPv6 addresses, with full operation of 20-25+ network devices (Nodes), including (7) alternating live wireless streaming video cameras dispersed over 3 levels of office including outdoor cameras, numerous interconnected wireless cell phones minimally 4 constant connects, 8 wireless voice Assistant speakers, 2 Intelligent wireless Thermostats, 2 Direct Gigabit Ethernet connected laser printers, 4 wireless printers on 2 different floor levels, 4 wireless streaming TV's one of which is 8K, 14 occasionally off-line devices both wireless & Gigabit wired to additional non-Linksys products, 1 old Linksys AC1200 Router for occasional Bridge use as a Network Storage device Gateway. Got to have immediate on-line backup. Actually the Gigabit port from the Linksys MR8300 Router provides Gigabit connections to the previously non-Gigabit Linksys AC1200 Router, which we use as the on-line network backup device.In-order to evaluate these various configurations, I have to tear down our current functional network and build a new network based on configurations 1,2, & 3 and thoroughly test each network using as many of our devices as possible and still maintain our business operation.End of Summary.1. The MR8300 with the Linksys Velop Extender. *I was given these devices to evaluate from Linksys. My EVALUATION was required for this configuration only. Sections 2 and 3 are NOT part of the Linksys required evaluate. I continued my evaluation into evaluations 2 & 3 since these configurations are what I NEED to run my business over our nearly 10,000s/f small office/home office SOHO.I thought, who throttled down the Linksys Extender, why only a Dual Band; obviously it had to be Price. Note to Linksys remake the Extender a Tri-Band configuration, why slow down this really nice (competitively priced) Velop system? This configuration worked well for my systems one one floor ~2,500+s/f hindered by concrete, drywall & vast array of other electronics.Second Floor....Signals were weak, good for Cell Phone file transfers, which successfully worked. Wireless printing worked ok but sometimes lost wireless connections. My thoughts were, might the connections been adequate to go a few hundred more feet, IF the Extender were a Tri-Band? Was the Extender (2.4 GHz) causing degradation...my bet is yes. So lets make a Tri-Band Extender please.2. The MR8300, with the Linksys Velop AC2600 (2 pack) & the Linksys Velop Extender.Pretty good configuration, fairly inexpensive, integrated fairly well, sometimes necessary to restart Router or connect to better Channels when adding/moving equipment. This configuration worked very well over 2 floors, the TV's on 2 floors streamed well as did some of the cameras. We liked this configuration. Very good for 3,00 -3,500 sf operation.3. The MR8300, with the Linksys Velop AC6600 (4 Pack) & the Linksys Velop Extender.Very nice, the connections worked almost perfectly over the nearly 10,000 s/f home/office area. We did have occasional connectivity problems and lost signal the first day, due to determining the TRUE coverage and configuration requirements to provide us with full functionality. We had to configure and reconfigure and let the Router select better Channels for faster Throughput; eventually we got it running very good even with connectivity outside the building for cell and live video streaming of video security cameras.A super good configuration for our office.I can help but comment on the inherent problems the Linksys Dual Band Velop Extender seemingly presents characteristic it its lack of a true MESH 3rd band Technology. We solved the outdoor communication problems by moving the Linksys Dual Band Velop Extender to the INNER office area and moving one of the Linksys Velop AC6600 (Nodes) as close as possible to the outside, actually we moved it to a window location which gave us another few hundred square feet outside connectivity. We moved the Node from an area where it previously was surrounded by concrete, bricks, metal & drywall.

Minor Setup Issues, but USB now works w/ Firmware!
2 January 2021

I delayed buying this router for ages as I wanted to see if they would ever enable the USB Port on the router or if they would release another router that had it available. Looking around back in December before Christmas, I found a 1.1.8 firmware had been released in November that enabled the USB Port. This got me to finaly purchase the router as a family gift with the hope that it would work. The router I got was a v1.1, and had the previous 1.1.7 firmware installed. After a couple issues with setup (I had/have an existing Velo node system and trying to setup a new Primary Router with an existing account caused problems - I only got it to go through by entering my existing account as a new account during the setup process). After the setup issues, everything went smooth for adding the two existing Nodes to this Router.I turned on the auto-firmware udpate feature, and thought I would get the new update, but nothing. They do offere a manual update feature, so I did that today with the new 1.1.8 firmware release with a laptop connected to the Router with a wired connection. The USB is now enabled and an External Storage entry now shows up in my app and in the web interface. I've verified that both a USB Thumbdrive and external WD harddrive work with the USB port and are accessable from our PCs.Overall, I'm glad this is finally working and I am happy with performance and feature. I just wish Linksys would have been more upfront about when the USB option would be made available.

Outstanding Mesh WiFi Router
28 October 2019

I debated on this purchasing this model or the new Netgear Wi-Fi 6 also known as “AX WiFi" and ultimately realized my devices were not ready yet and went with the great reviews of this Linksys router. I was also impressed with the built-in Mesh WiFi technology lets you expand your coverage as your needs grow with the included Linksys Velop Mesh WiFi Extender that I got as a package at a great price! I had been renting my Cox Gigablast modem gateway and decided to purchase my own DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem and pair with my own WiFi router to optimize my home network. I love the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Mobile App for managing my network and constantly getting the fast wireless internet speeds I pay for and beyond. I love the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Mobile App for managing my network and constantly getting the fast wireless internet speeds I pay for and beyond. My new internet package includes up to 150 Mpbs download and I am constantly receiving at least 170 Mpbs! The unit is not bulky, aesthetically pleasing and does not have a ton of bright flashing lights! I did have a few issues during the initial setup, but the Linksys Support was outstanding and got me up and running in little time! Overall, this modem is fast enough for my home network (Smart TV to stream Netflix and Amazon Prime, electronic devices and laptop). I have been using it for over a week and amazed at the reliability and speed of this network all for an affordable price and mesh expandable! Also, before purchasing I had a ton of questions and your "Live Chat" sales agents were always very knowledgeable and helpful and always highly recommended this unit for my 1,800 sq. ft home and limited users for a perfect WiFi experience! Great job Linksys and hopeful you will be introducing "AX WiFi" routers soon to your product lineup!

Robust, Whole House Mesh Wi-Fi network
24 March 2019

Finally, a robust fully functional Whole House Mesh WiFi System. Last week I set up a four (4) node Linksys Velop Mesh WiFi network in our home. Our home is four bedroom and 3100 ft2. My Mesh networkconsists of:1. a Linksys MR8300 Max-Stream™ AC2200 Tri-Band Mesh WiFi Router,2. two Linksys VELOP™ AC4400 Tri-Band Mesh WiFi nodes,3. a Linksys VELOP™ AC1200 Dual-Band Mesh WiFi node. The discriminating benefits of the Velop whole house mesh network as compared to an 801.11ac router with extenders are:1. It provides seamless WiFi coverage using one network name and password; no need to reconnect to an extender when moving from one room to another.2. It provides seamless WiFi coverage using one network name and password; no need to reconnect to an extender when moving from one room to another.2. WiFi network coverage, signal strength and quality are excellent throughout the house without loss of throughput; the received signal strength (RSSI) at the far corners of our house at 2.4 GHz was greater than -50 dBm and greater than -65 dBm in both 5 GHz sub bands.3. the system automatically switches to the best signal source, frequency band and signal path to optimize links to all devices.4. The system can be set up and controlled using either the Linksys smart phone app or LinksysSmartWiFi browser-based app.5. The Network has an algorithm that selects the best clear channels and node-to-node connections.6. It has attractive inconspicuous small footprint nodes, no blinking lights, no ugly antenna and few wires.7. Setting up the Velop WiFi MESH was much easier than setting up a centrally located router with range extenders. In the latter case, all range extenders must connect to the central router which is not the case with Velop. Adding Velop nodes and connecting all my devices was straight forward. On the downside, each node has only two Ethernet connectors and no USB connectors, a reasonable compromise for maintaining a small footprint and keeping it simple especially as the MR8300 router has four Gigabit ethernet and one USB 3.0 port.It would help if the Linksys apps provided feedback on signal strength and site survey interference to help improve node positioning. (I spent hours tweeking node positions.) The channel optimizer and MU-MIMO should adaptively offset positioning errors.
