This is a Great lens! The artistic possibilities are endless. It is manually focused and needs some practice, but the resulting pictures are well worth the effort....love it! THe service from Adorama is excellent.

I love this lens, but it will NOT open up to either f2 or f1.8. ALSO, when shooting at f16 in the shade and on a cloudy day, there is STILL so much glow that I find it distracting. In reviewing online photos taken at f5.6 to f16, I don't see the excessive glow I'm getting at these stops. White flowers on a bush look like they've been outlined by a pale green marker. This seems to be a defective lens, and I'm hoping to return it.

I'm in between a beginner and intermediate in skill and photography is a hobby - I am new to the Sony A7ii coming from Nikon DX cameras and this was my 2nd Lensbaby, I also have the composer pro with Sweet 35 and Edge 80. The Sweet 35 is my favourite but this is a very close second.I can understand why this is a love it or hate it lens. I would think if you are always hunting for the perfect most sharp focus and ultra high detail in all your shots then this lens is not for you. The focus is there - but I don't think that's really the point. For me, I use this lens for creating an atmosphere in my images - for emphasising soft textures and for playing with light and focus. The focus is there - but I don't think that's really the point. For me, I use this lens for creating an atmosphere in my images - for emphasising soft textures and for playing with light and focus. I love backlighting with it and I love the soft glowy effect it gives when you focus just in front of the subject. It does have sharp focus but at wider apertures I prefer it just slightly soft as I find it too contrasty in sharp focus for my tastes.I play with this lens and I have have great fun with it. A part of me loves the soft focus vintage look and this lens is perfect for creating that. I can see why some might see it as cheesy, but I say poo-poo to them.Oh and it's lovely for portraits - dreamy and very flattering. It works fine with my Sony A7ii - someone said that you couldn't use the focus magnifier but you can - also the focus peaking works well as does all the metering as far as I can tell. Manual focus takes practice but it does make you feel like a 'proper' photographer :)One negative, the cap is not great, it's metal and is supposed to stay on with friction but it kept falling off, also it doesn't fit with a filter on the lens. I had to stick velcro on it, it's a fix but not a fix you'd expect to have to do with a Β£500 lens.
I purchased the Lensbaby Velvet 85 just before Christmas (2017). It's now June and I have only really got to grips with it. To be fair, I haven't used it for four months, so the six month period might seem slightly unfair. I shoot predominantly fashion, business concepts (stock) and food professionally. To begin with, I really struggled with the DOF - F stop wide open is a non-starter really, but I have found it incredibly good for studio work (mainly food - see attached) but only when stopped down completely. The viewfinder darkens (very irritating) when you stop down so we compose the shot (and the focus) wide open and then step down to maximum F-stop before taking the shot. I love the effect it creates, particularly the image quality. The glass is clearly very good and the colour rendition is excellent. So, if you're new to the Lensbaby 85 and feel frustrated just stick with it. Be prepared to experiment and be patient with your results. It's very different from any lense I have worked with (Nikkors - married to a D810) but I am really delighted with the results in the studio so far in regard to food imagery.
This company affords me the ability to try out different lenses in order for me to decide on whether or not I want to purchase one, without spending a lot of money.Lots of different lenses available to try for a reasonable price.
This Lens adds a soft, silky, dreamy look to your image when you shot wide open. I found that f/4 is the perfect aperture for a center focus and a softness around it. But if you want to achieve a painterly effect go for f/1.8 to f/2.8. The lens is great for Macro photography with 1:2 magnification and shallow depth of field, which gives you a beautiful buttery ("velvet") Bokeh and it razor sharp at f/8. This Lens is great for portrait work - to achieve an old Hollywood glamour soft focus image. This manual focus all-metal lens is well made and has great image quality - Great value for the price!
I needed an escape from 2020 and the pandemic . I found my answerWith the Lensbaby 85 mm . The softness and dreamy images bring a whole new look to my portfolio . It is a fun lens to bring out that creativity in you .Go for it .... enjoy!
This lens does require a little bit of getting used to as it is entirely manual. However the results are just so nice! When you want a soft velvet look, go for it. I use it for flowers but as well for portraits and I love it!
I have a friend that got me into the extreme close up photography (or a least a chance to get started) and this guy really does the job. It is a manual focus but the pictures are really spectacular.
