Work purchased 2 brand new identical systems. One for my daily work (email, meetings, video conferencing, etc.), the other for my research and development (R&D) work, for software development, virtual machines, Visual Studio, etc. From day one both systems would act up locking once or twice a day hard, forcing me to have to power them off (long button hold). The work system became rapidly worse and worse. Until finally it started making all kinds of beeping and jingle tones when powered on. They sent a technician to put in a new motherboard in my work system while I limped along on my R&D system. (tok about a week even though premium business support). But also the work one inexplicably shipped with bitlocker on, and nobody had the key (not our IT department or anyone else (I did not setup factory setup). So had to completely blow away at the key level and file another support ticket to get the restore image to download to USB on another system, then run the factory reset (took 12 hours to re-image!). Finally the following week (2 weeks dead system, and 6 weeks since I received the laptop new), system is running, and I'm reinstalling everything. Meanwhile, the R&D system keeps randomly dropping the wifi card (turns wifi on and off), and is starting to lock up hard 1-3 times per day. I have an important demo tomorrow where I have to run several VM's. It took me weeks to get everything setup on it, so I can't risk a replacement or wipe yet. After tomorrow's demo, I'll file a support ticket about the locking up for the R&D laptop, and we'll see what we find is wrong with that one. I have lost a LOT of productivity between these two new systems. A co-worker, who started the same week I did, and has another identical to my two, has been having similar lockup and other weird networking issues on his as well. When they run, they are decent, but so far not happy, and have lost a LOT of productivity.

This laptop looks nice and the screen is the perfect size and has good clarity. However, the fan is constantly running, which is extremely loud and annoying when in class. The laptop freezes up frequently and goes to sleep often no matter how the settings are set. The battery life on this device is worse than the six year old Chromebook I was working with before. After spending a huge dollar amount on this computer to use for school, I'm very frustrated and annoyed with the product. Unfortunately, I purchased this summer and it didn't get much use before school started so I am outside the return window. If I could, I would return this laptop immediately and replace with a useable device. I wouldn't recommend the ThinkPad X1 Carbon to anyone.

This computer exceeded expectations. Overall, the computer has a great, ergonomic design, with excellent features. The fingerprint scanner is useful for quick logins, and I can even use it to sign in to some websites. The touch screen is responsive and sensitive, making it good for design due to the variety of finger gestures that it accepts. The included RAM makes the computer very fast, though I do wish it had 1 TB of storage space instead of 512 GB. The keyboard is very nice, and the privacy screen functionality is a cool feature, although I wish the base (max) brightness of the laptop was a bit more luminous.Overall quite satisfied with this purchase; very good computer at a reasonable price.
I've been amazed at how enjoyable this laptop has been to use. I was hesitant to make the jump from my aging Macbook Pro but I'm very happy I did and have no regrets.Materials and feel is top tier; the chassis is stiff, and the matte surfaces feel as good as they look. The on-off button is a little bit oddly placed, but also nicely protected, and since it's on the side of the computer can be used even with the lid closed or in a bag. Startup is fast and in just a few seconds I can already be designing a part in CAD, looking at data, or editing a video. The 4K screen is amazingly crisp, has great contrast, and incredibly deep color. The keyboard has a great feel with good travel and solid clicks, something that's been missing in most other laptops. Connectivity is great with HDMI, USB C, and actual USB A ports, so no adapters needed! Audio quality is also surprisingly good for something so thin; I've noticed sound is especially good when sitting on a hard surface, but loses a bit of volume when on a soft surface or held mid-air. Battery life has been longer than expected with the processing power this is capable of, and I like how I can have power or long battery life when I need it.The only thing I can complain about is the cooling, which can be heard at times, and is dependent on airflow to the intake port on the bottom of the laptop. With this laptop on a soft surface, or your lap, you'll hear the fans a bit more. This is rarely an issue though and it's a tradeoff I'm happy to make for more processing power.Overall, I love using this laptop. It stands out with it's high quality, high performance in a compact package, and well thought out form-follows-function design.
The product itself seems quite good, and I expect to like it a lot. But the ordering process was a challenge; I had to go through the site 7 or 8 times to be sure I was ordering what I wanted . And trying to install Office 2019 on the laptop (prepurchased with the computer) was awful. It required me to do things I did not want to do and did not want to do in the order required, so I was unable to set up the PC just as I wanted. There were several versions of the directions on installation, which either were not available (send you to a page with instructions to do something that was not an option on the page) or left out steps in the process, so you were not sure if you were dong it properly or not. There were several versions of the directions on installation, which either were not available (send you to a page with instructions to do something that was not an option on the page) or left out steps in the process, so you were not sure if you were dong it properly or not. I was installing Office 2019 Home and Business, and it repeatedly wanted me to sign up for Office 365 in order to access to MY purchased software, and I did NOT wan on the machine at all. The process also required you to access instructions via MS Outlook which it had not yet installed on the machine, since that is part of the Office 2019 I was trying to install. Oh, and I got the email telling me how to install my Office software 5 DAYS AFTER I received my computer. Huh? And the main part of these 5-day-late installation instructions were to NOT hit the OFFICE button on the computer menu until the software was installed, as this might prevent proper installation. Well, who is going to buy a computer for a business/office machine and NOT have tried to install the program (absent any other directions) in the first 5 days by hitting the OFFICE button on the menu? Not that it should matter, since any competent adult should be able to purchase and set up a new computer without a lot of trouble, but I has BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering and have been practicing computer and communications systems engineering for 40 years; I'm really not that unfamiliar with the process! Again, I love Lenovo PCs..... I've owned them and used them since they were IBM Thinkpads, not Lenovo, but the installation, which used to be simple and straightforward, now seems much too complicated now.
I love the new ThinkPad X1 more than I thought I would. I started a new job and needed to update my laptop in order to work remotely and have all the functionality of a workstation when I went into the office. This is my third Lenovo and I have always liked the durability, longevity and keyboard configuration, so you could say I'm a fan, but the X1 goes above and beyond my expectations. When the shipping box arrived I was concerned the laptop was actually missing because the carbon body is so lightweight. It was super easy to set up. I plugged it in, scanned my fingerprint and within minutes everything was up and running. I'm a photographer and build websites and the screen resolution is amazing. I have multiple pages and resources open at once and there's never a slowdown. I swear I am typing faster on this keyboard. Love the battery life. I have presented at the office, played videos, collaborated with colleagues and never plugged it in. I bought one adapter (VGA to HDMI) and a $14 case on Amazon. I don't buy a new computer often (my last purchase was a ThinkPad T400) so I justify the expense over the years that I use it and the investment is well worth it. Plus it was on sale. I am doing more, better, and faster than before. Love this machine. So glad I got it.
I bought this laptop from Lenovo.com in the summer of 2020 to use for school. It has a good keyboard, and the fingerprint reader and face sign-in are great features for a portable laptop. However, I had a number of serious issues with the laptop. First, with i5 and 4K UHD screen, the laptop routinely ran out of charge in just 2 hours of use web browsing and editing documents at low brightness. This is unacceptable for a laptop marketed with up to 19.5 hours of battery life. It also ran uncomfortably hot even under light loads, but that is to be expected for an ultralight device. After just 1 year of regular use (just outside of warranty) with good care and cleaning, the screen failed. As the photos show it displays randomly colored vertical stripes, flickers strongly, and some portions of the screen even turn off entirely. It now freezes within seconds of turning on and is completely unusable. I cannot stress enough: DON'T BUY THE LAPTOP, especially not with the 4k screen.
I am a mechanical engineer who has been searching for a laptop with (1) sufficient computing power, (2) portability, and (3) design. Before I begin, I want to point out that I am not paid for this review. I am writing this review because it says that I have a chance to win a Lenovo Tab M10 (really).(1) Sufficient computing powerI needed a laptop to run various softwares. Some softwares require relatively low computing power (e.g., simple web browsing, Microsoft offices) and some require more computing power (e.g., computer coding, finite element simulations). And of course, I play some computer games from time to time. Based on these needs, my priorities were Processor, RAM, and SSD capacity. I compared between X1 Carbon 8th gen, Dell XPS 13, HP spectre, and MacBook Pro (although I was not going to buy MacBook anyway because iOS is not optimized for my engineering softwares). After a few weeks of study and lots of searching, I realized that it is rare to find 10th gen Intel i7, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD laptop under $1300. Typically, if you have a good CPU, your SSD capacity is small and/or your RAM is 8 GB. Note that my priority did not include graphic card. Therefore, for the price I paid for the laptop, I am very satisfied that this laptop can sufficiently handle demanding simulations and computer codings, and definitely can be used for daily tasks.(2) PortabilityI use laptop almost 24/7, so I wanted it to be portable. Compared to MacBook Pro (2020) that my wife uses now, X1 Carbon 8th gen is very light (maybe comparable to MacBook air). So wherever I go (such as coffee shop, office, laboratory, conferences, etc), it is easy to be carried around and fits perfectly in my backpack, shoulder bag, carry-on suitcase, or whatever. I am not saying that MacBook Pro is hard to be carried around, but I am relatively speaking in terms of weight; the weight difference between the two laptops is about 1 lb., which is quite large for me. And yet, X1 Carbon is durable and stiff enough, and not "plasticky" that I don't need to worry about it too much while I carry it around.(3) DesignThis is a very subjective factor, but I really like the design mainly due to its slimness, matte-looking surface, keyboard arrangement, and connection port locations. Especially regarding the connection ports, I do like the fact that there are variety of ports that I don't really need to carry around an adapter dongle (this is also a huge plus for me in terms of portability and efficiency). Some potential disadvantages:- Screen resolution : if you are used to a 2560×1600 resolution laptop, a 1920 × 1080 FHD might be a little bit frustrating, especially if you are a person who likes to keep several windows on your screen at the same time.- Fingerprints on surface : matte surface looks cool for me, but if you touch the surface with a slightly oily hand (maybe after using an oily hand lotion), you will definitely see your fingerprints on it. So if you are a person who cannot stand to see those fingerprints, this might be a minus for you.I hope this review will be useful for everyone.Thank you.
