I bought this set because I've been waiting years for Lego to make another Mars rover set. This was my first technic build as well. The instructions were clear and simple and I had no trouble building it. There is really not much to not like about it. The "rocker bogie" suspension system is awesome looking when completed and the deck of the rover has a good amount of details. There are really only two things I find slightly disappointing with this build:1. The MMRTG fans are not really attached very well and get moved out of place easily.2. Percy's "head" lacks detail. I had to add the Service Loop to the mast which fills out the head better.Overall the set is well priced for the piece count and I am very happy to have this build on my shelf! I highly recommend ... It took us forever to build but we were excited every time we finished a bag. It took us about a month to complete so it was at least 15 hours all together. The app was so helpful in putting it together. For smaller projects we usually use the included booklet but this manual was huge. My daughter and I loved building it together and we can’t wait our next Lego challenge. The worst part was trying to fix pieces on the inside once the shell was put together. I couldn’t keep the spinning panels on top from falling apart. That part in the 2nd pic should have been saved for last.

I'm "old" and been building since I was in kindergarten. So yes, very experienced. I own many many technical sets including all of the NASA ones. That said, I won't drone on and on about how cool, fun, unique, etc this set is - it's all of that! But I want to put the word out that there are a LOT of sub-components that are geared and must be fitted precisely for the vehicle to work properly. The issue is that the pieces WILL fit properly, but there is no indication that it is not in the exact required position until it is far too late to easily fix the issue. Everything is clipped together and overlapped in such a way that it is extremely difficult to remove prior sections to get at the issue.Again, it's a great set - but I'm finding it frustratingly easy to ... This set is a good representation of the Mars Rover vehicles, with faithful recreation of the steering and suspension functions. Two of the front-arm functions are also operated from the other end of the model.I had trouble with the clutch power between the black 4-lobed gears and the 4M axles at each corner, the ones that hold the wheel bogies on to the arms. The bogies would fall off when I picked up the model. I swapped some of the gears round to improve it but it's not as good as I would hope or expect. I would have used brown 5M axles and extra white half-bushes at each corner instead of the 4M axles.Other than that the build went very well and the model is fun to play with. Best to park in "spin" mode so it doesn't run away!I bought a second set so I could ... Best to park in "spin" mode so it doesn't run away!I bought a second set so I could either have the two rovers on a Mars layout, or just make best use of the pieces. The new pieces are just the 6 wheels and the elbow piece on the front arm, where a dark grey 3-wide disc has 2 pegs instead of the usual 3M beam in previous sets.It might have been better to have a gold 2x2 brick instead of putting 4 stickers on one brick!I look forward to more Technic Space-themed sets. I use Technic sets with suitable coloured pieces to add Technic functions to Classic Space and follow-on themes, so more Bright Blue panels would be useful please (not azure or dark blue). Also more grey and dark grey panels would be useful. We do OK for red, white and black ones. I tend to buy sets more for the usefulness of the pieces (especially panels) than for what the model is and I often buy more than one instance of the most useful sets.
I have never built a technic set but it was quote chellenging and engaging. I have the other four main space sets and this is a very welcome addition to add to my collection. The gear mechanism for me that swaps the wheels orientation is a little inconsistent for me but the mechanism for the arm is flawless and a marvel of lego engineering. The only thing I did was i covered up some of the holes visible on the sides with flat tiles and pins. Makes it look way cleaner and I almost wish the designers thought of that as well.
Please note that the following review is my personal point of view as an adult LEGO fan and builder. The marketing of MRP is aimed towards a younger audience with focus on AR and learning features. However, I won't include the AR part in my review and rating, as I found that functionality tremendously annoying and clumsy (Reviewing MRP w/AR would definitely have had negative impact on final score). That said I did enjoy the build process and final model. The final MRP vehicle is true to its real life counterpart in terms of looks, and the model showcase some fine LEGO mechanics (360° steering, movable arm and articulated vehicle suspension). Be careful when handling the MRP model. Due to weak wheel connectivity, they tend to fall off (Stronger solution could've been ... Be careful when handling the MRP model. Due to weak wheel connectivity, they tend to fall off (Stronger solution could've been solved by LEGO design team). However, many details such as antennae, cameras and scientific instruments will also satisfy LEGO, space and/or engineering nerds (Like me 😃). The MRP set includes a LEGO version of NASA’s Ingenuity drone helicopter which positively adds to the overall LEGO Technic building and model satisfactory. The value of MRP is good, great package of LEGO pieces, building technique exercises plus the official NASA license. Highly recommendable for all space, engineering and LEGO Technic fans!
Overall it is a very nice model and fits the Lego NASA range well. But noticeably it is missing a nameplate! While the Saturn V, Space Shuttle Discovery (inc Hubble) and Lunar Lander all have a nameplate of sorts, the Mars Rover Perseverance only has a small sticker that is hardly visible when on display. Also the gearing to control the direction of the wheels has too much play, so much so that some of the wheels don't change when adjusting the steering.Otherwise, a good looking and challenging build.
The Mars Perserverance Rover is a fun build and an awesome display piece with surprising playability. I had previously watched a documentary on the building on the Perseverance rover and its mission to collect samples from the Mars surface and was hooked. FYI, this mission is tied to two other NASA missions to send these samples into Mars orbit and then send them to Earth. Fascinating. This Lego set does great honor to Perseverance rover in its accurate engineering design, details, and functions. Also, included is an independent solar powered drone. Incredible value and something that it definitely a conversation starter. Definitely a winner.
My son has been counting down the days of this product release for a long time. The excitement matches the emotions that ours daughter feel when Taylor Swift releases a new “Taylor’s Version” album. “Eeeekkkkk”Needless to say, this set was completed the same day it arrived and been played with daily. The build quality has allowed him to actually play with the set w/o worry of pieces falling off, etc. once he is done playing, it has its very own display spot with all of his other space and NASA themed sets.Great job LEGO Group!
For starters, the Perseverance Rover was bigger than I was expecting it to be. The building process was time-consuming, but the step-by-step instructions were extremely easy to follow. I especially appreciate the size reference for some pieces to make it easier to ensure you’re using the right pieces. There were maybe three times where I got a little confused on what I was supposed to do. However, I got all of the prices working like they’re supposed to except the wheels. They worked, but then something came loose/apart inside and it was too much to back track, so I left it. The finished product is such a resemblance to the actual rover to include the drone, Ingenuity. My favorite part, however, is the AR experience that can be utilized with this Lego set. It shows ... It shows information about the rover, real data from Perseverance, and even has interactive missions to complete that replicate the missions the real Perseverance is completing on Mars. I’ll be using it in my classroom for my students to enjoy as well as utilizing it as an educational experience for our space unit. Such a great Lego set for both Lego and space fans!
