This was a May 4th buy at the lego store for me. I missed out on the first ucs y-wing, so I was super hyped about this improved version.Took about 5 hours to build split up into 2 nights' worth of building. When completed, the model is spectacular. The size is a bit larger than minifig scale, but close enough for me.So much detail in the finished model. With so many small pieces used to add the detail, I thought that it would be a little bit difficult to handle without pieces falling off.I was WRONG !!This is very sturdy and I was able to "fly" it around with ease.I like that landing gear was included so you have the option of displaying it with landing gear deployed or on the awesome stand.Only gripe I have are those darned stickers. Cmon Lego, I have seen cheaper sets with no stickers used for details. For a UCS set, there should be very little, if any, stickers used.Looking forward to the next Star Wars UCS set....

The great thing about this set is the level of detail on the surface. It is probably unmatched in this regard. Two problems though. One is that the cockpit is too small. The same cockpit was used for the much smaller regular Star Wars set from 2 years earlier. It barely closes with a minifigure in it, due to the equipment. The bigger problem is its structural integrity. Lots of little bits fall off, and the back of the engines is particularly weak. So too are several parts of the bottom. The flags in the rearmost bit are especially bad, with almost no clutch power. In short, this is not a swooshable model and will always cause problems when handled.

I am not a big LEGO collector, nor a huge Star Wars fan, but this was a must have set for me. I do like both and the Y-Wing has always been my favorite ship. I missed out on the first USC Y-Wing set and have been patiently waiting for a new version. My patience has been rewarded! This set blows the previous set out of the water. The size and scale is perfect for display. The "greebling" is very well done and gives it a very realistic look. I have seen negative comments regarding stickers and the canopy. I have no problem with stickers. They are a little bit of a pain to put on, but they do add more detail to the set. Others have commented that the canopy should open sideways like the ships in the movie do. While I would like to have seen this as well, its not a big ... When the canopy is closed, it looks very close to the movie models. The build was not difficult, but you do have to pay attention to what you are doing. It took me about 3 days to put together, but that is mainly because I could only work on it in small stretches. My only negative is the price. Which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. This set is retailing for $199.99 US. Personally, I think it is only worth about $125.00. This is not unique to this set. Most LEGO sets are overpriced in my opinion. Particularly the Star Wars sets. However, I liked this set well enough that I paid the $199.99 for it.

When it comes to UCS sets, out of the many I have built, this one has all the fun parts a UCS set should have. Tons of details, fun yet challenging, solid build to where you don't feel like it'll break even if you drop it from 10 feet off the ground while trying to hang it from the ceiling, everything just screams "Time, care, diligence, and quality."Fantastic building experience for a retired set. I just bought this last week at a second hand LEGO store, box was damaged, but all pieces were accounted for, so nothing to worry about.LEGO, use this as the standard for Star Wars UCS sets. What a beautiful set! I missed the first UCS Y-WING many years ago and it was the one I was most gutted about.. however this more than makes up for it and the newer techniques and pieces that are now in the Lego designers arsenal add a major touch of better detail that makes this model truly stand out.. as for Greebling this has more than I've seen on any official set, seriously! This thing is smothered in small details that are accurate to the source material.. even on the bottom of the craft! all the cooling pipes and engine details and pumps etc are all here and they look absolutely fantastic! Another nice touch is the folding landing skidgears that fold away neatly against the fuselage.. and as for the construction of the engines they are brilliantly put ... MoreWhat a beautiful set! A couple of small niggles of mine are the inclusion of stickers but they have been in UCS Sets for a while now so that's nothing major.. but the biggest niggle is the lack of armprint on the minifigure.. I mean for a £170 set I would at least like to see some exclusive printing Lego! On the whole though this set truly is a work of art and a worthy addition to any UCS Collection. Another Excellent job Lego
This set is massive, and solid - I feel like I could drop it and only loose a few greeblies. That being said, I did have a fairly major gripe. The set is advertised as having "wheel-activated rotating ion cannons" but that's not really the case. The Ion Cannons rotate, and there's the beginning of a mechanism to allow something in the back to rotate them, and then... you never finish it. There's no wheel. Wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't advertised, and the fact that it's a step backwards from something like the new UCS Snowspeeder, that has mechanical wing flaps AND a "working" gunners seat that rotates the rear cannon.Just because most of the review is the gripe doesn't mean this isn't a gorgeous set that was fun to build. Over all I like this set, particularly all the little details on the outside (including the bottom), and the design of the cockpit, especially all the controlles on the inside and the studs faceing downwards on the bottom. My one gripe is all of the stickers on the outside of the cockpit, though I understand that it would be a lot of printed bricks to print.I also like the landing legs and the rotating cannon on top of the cockpit, all though the piece used to attach the min to the rest of the ship at one end makes it a little hard to turn. There was a lot of repetition building the engines, but that is to be expected. I love that Lego added a targeting scope in the cockpit, which was a feature I have been missing in the smaller Starfighter modles. The details on ... PROS: Looks great on display and as a UCS set the details are really nice. It is also surprisingly good for actual play and swoosh factors which is not usually expected in a UCS set. It doesn't fall apart nearly so readily as other UCS sets do. It is a very enjoyable build for detail oriented people and the set features a lot of cockpit detail inside too.CONS: Stickers...for the price the UCS sets go for they should NOT have stickers. Additionally this is another UCS set where exclusive figures were shoe horned in while not adding to the set itself. While the droid seems logical to complete the visual of the set the pilot figure actually really detracts...mostly because of the cockpit. While very detailed in the interior the cockpit was designed to seat a standard mini fig...and the results do not work. It ends up looking like a child is flying the ship and the proportions distract a lot form the display factor. I really think they should have just left the figures out and gone with more proportion accuracy in that regard. In that case the older version seems notably better.
First I must elaborate on the weight and size of this set. It is fairly heavy for a sizable chunk of blocks. Now don't get the wrong idea I absolutely love this set. My biggest nitpicky comment of negativity is by far the landing gear. It seems like the designer was batting on all cylinders that is until he got to the landing gear. I feel he had to compromise a great deal for it. Due to the limited piece count left available. I really wish lego would design something more accurate when it comes to the landing gear. In my opinion this is the most important part of a spacecraft. Other than that every detail is nailed down tight. The level of depth of the fuselage as well as the side propulsion tubes. The space for the pilot and astro-mech droid. It even has a ... MoreFirst I must elaborate on the weight and size of this set. It is fairly heavy for a sizable chunk of blocks. When I heard Lego were remaking this set I got very excited. I was too young when the original Y-Wing UCS was released. One of the first sets I built was a £30 Y-Wing set. I loved all the little details on the ship and it's so iconic. Over 10 years later I get to build this masterpiece! The only other set I can compare it to is the UCS Millenium Falcon. Its just as fun to build, extremely detailed with so many small intricate details and is a beauty to behold. The only difference was the Y-Wing took a few hours as opposed to a few days to build! There are only 13 numbered bags but everyone has at least one or two smaller bags filled with the tiny parts. Best on a display shelf in my opinion. It's one of my favourite Lego Star Wars UCS sets and goes nicely with the B-Wing and X-Wing. Do yourself a favour and pick this up. Worth the price tag!Thank you Lego for making another childhood dream come true!
