The Lego name on the pieces seemed less readable compared to another piece next to it and the light grey colour of some pieces, matched nothing that I have to date. The base plates were also all slightly warped, none of them sit flat, even with the weight of the train on it. It's available now. Also the price with the powered up gear, makes it almost the same price as the Cargo Train (60198) which is pretty steep for one locomotive. There is no flange on the 3rd and 6th Wheels, making it not grip well and easily derail on a standard lego curve. The only other thing I find unusual is that its Brown. The Crocodile CE 6/8 trains were green and only became brown when they were upgraded to the BE 6/8.Still, its fun, its worth getting, but it just feels like it came from somewhere other than Lego.

I thought the building experience was really fun! Unfortunately I don't have the new bluetooth motor system, but i have a lot of old power functions bits and after finding a way to put them in, it ran very well, although i did take the elastic bands off of the front and back axles, as it was getting stuck on corners. I've been wanting LEGO to make a model of a real train for years, and this has definitely delivered! My only issue would be that some of the brown pieces felt like they wee third party plastic; they didn't feel like they were up to normal LEGO standards. This issue hasn't stopped the set looking great and all the pieces went together extremely well! I received it as a birthday present and built it with my father! The next day it was running round my oval of track! A beautiful set, and I would certainly love to see another model locomotive set like this from LEGO very soon! Maybe a British diesel locomotive, or an American steam train! Well done LEGO, a fine set! Hopefully the start of more model locomotive sets!

A great build yielding a great display piece, which for the most part (see other reviews) runs very nicely on track. As has been said, the contrast in the manual is a little bit annoying, but otherwise the build was great. The pantographs are very nicely executed. The usage of hot dogs as hoses is very clever. There's plenty of detail in the model. To me, the best feature is the nearly studless design. In my opinion, the biggest downside is that fitting lights such as 88005 will be a challenge, although not impossible with some serious modification. Also, a great deal of play value could be added with working doors, which I'm sure some great builder will solve.Overal I think Lego has struck gold with this one, hopefully resulting in a new series of expert rail ... MoreA great build yielding a great display piece, which for the most part (see other reviews) runs very nicely on track. An excellent display and play piece!

I've been a big LEGO train fan in the past, so it's also been heartbreaking to see the theme being neglected in recent years. I don't have a large layout at all, but I collect the trains because of their rarity and fun-factor in LEGO terms. This new crocodile train is - fingers crossed - the beginning of a new train era. It's exactly what the brand has need for a long time, a product that appeals to big (adult!) kids, collectors and those who just want a display piece to appreciate the design. And everything about the product justifies this. The inclusion of a display stand is marvellous. And everything about the product justifies this. The inclusion of a display stand is marvellous. I keep it on my bookshelf, which means that when I'm not running the train on a layout as a maintenance vehicle (Yes, I have the story weighed off!), I can look at it within a different space and just admire the train. The info panel is a nice touch and makes the piece look more professional. In fact, I'm going to now use the design to make more stands for my other trains, like the Maersk and Emerald Night.I also really like the colour scheme. It is true to the original train and has a very industrial-look about it, though I do admit there are similar European trains that look wonderful in bright blues and reds. The packaging and instruction booklet are very nice and are definitely keepers. If I wasn't living with the significant other, I'd have them on show! Don't think I could trust the cat either...There are couple of niggles however.I would have liked to have seen the gaps between the three sections reduced and feel this could be achieved easily, so I'm not sure why this was overlooked - particularly given the price of this set. The fan community has already demonstrated very easy solutions. And I can't for the life of me understand why the instruction pages have a black background. There isn't enough contrast with the images of the model itself, which makes it difficult to see where the required parts are for that step. I have some colour blindness, and the clashing of these colours has the (comparable) effect of turning brown into green. But I'm willing to overlook these purely because I'm so happy LEGO has made a new advanced train. Please to continue to do so, and to take the above observations into account.

LEGO created a wonderful LEGO locomotive based on the real thing, the Swiss 6/8 III Crocodile. This is what AFOLs (and probably elder kids) were waiting for many years after the great Creator Expert trains.Stunning details, lovely solutions everywhere. It looks like the real thing and with Powered Up application it sounds like the real thing. Personally I don't need the display stand but understand the logic behind it. Well, if this is the way that ensures more purchases by AFOLs (and more Train sets later by LEGO) then be it. I like that it can be motorized easily, enjoyed building the set and love to see it going around. One thing I would change is the instructions: it is hard to read due to the black background. It was not a good choice as the dark reddish brown and dark bluish gray pieces cannot be seen even in sunlight. I would stay with light blue colour as instructions' background. The other annoying thing is that the loco derails easily in curves which could be eliminated by using some ballast as was the case in the good old 12v era. Last thing is that there is no light for the loco out of the box but I am sure experienced builders can add it.The verdict: it is a must buy for all adult LEGO and Train fans. I like it so much that I plan to purchase another copy.

Awesome Set! Easy to add matching passenger cars
2 September 2020

Lego designers really did a great job with this set. It looks incredible, it's really easy (but expensive) to add power functions to it, and it is actually a pretty accurate portrayal of an actual Crocodile Locomotive. Two suggestions to make this set even better (for Lego or collectors)... first, close the gap between the middle part of the locomotive and the two end pieces with 1x2 slope pieces in reddish-brown. It's easy to do and doesn't require a lot of parts- but will make the set look much better. Second, add three 1x4 tile pieces in dark bluish gray to the pieces on top of the wheels on the front and back- that will prevent the train from derailing when taking corners at higher speeds.Other than that- this set is really great. It looks good on the display stand or along regular track. I designed and built a few matching passenger train cars to this locomotive. I used the current passenger train #60197 as a guide for how to design the passenger cars, but used a 6x28 base instead of the 6x24 base that's used in #60197. The pieces aren't expensive and are widely available in dark bluish gray and reddish brown. Others have created matching passenger cars in dark green. Both options look great and really add some custom pizazz to this locomotive. This set is sure to be a collector's item one day. All retired Creator Trains significantly increase in value over time- so if you are considering this train- buy it before Lego retires it. You won't regret your purchase.

What a wonderful surprise the Crocidile Locomotive was. Lego nailed the design, color palette, brick selection and overall design. Congrats to the designer for a job well-done.The build was challenging for certain, however, most will find that the most challenging aspect is to achieve the perfection as shown with the imagery on the package, in the instructions or the picture found on lego.com. The positioning of the wheels prior to adding the cross bars, for example, differs from side-to-side to achieve a realistic effect. The brown brick selection used as the main color is simply perfect, and changes in appearance depending on the light in the space.I especially appreciate the display track included with this set. The display track is substantial, detailed and elevates the overall quality of the locomotive itself.Great job, Lego team, on this set. I hope you consider future locomotives and create a bit of a series. I will purchase all of them if you do. With so many locomotives to select from, from around the globe, I'm certain you'll have no trouble growing the series and interest from your global consumer base.

Getting the most out of this amazing train

If you like Lego and you like trains you'll find this set is amazing. Probably the best train Lego has produced for adult builders.HOWEVER, there are two problems with this set that can lead to great frustration. Fortunately both of them can be easily fixed.1) If you are planning on motorizing this set, when you get to step 53 in the instructions, stop and read ahead 65 pages to where they give the instructions for motorizing the set. You will discover that you can save yourself from 15+ min of building an interior that you will subsequently remove to make room for the motor. (if you are not motorizing it right away, go ahead and build the interior)2) At least one popular youtuber encountered a serious design flaw that causes the train to derail, especially ... MoreIf you like Lego and you like trains you'll find this set is amazing. You will discover that you can save yourself from 15+ min of building an interior that you will subsequently remove to make room for the motor. (if you are not motorizing it right away, go ahead and build the interior)2) At least one popular youtuber encountered a serious design flaw that causes the train to derail, especially when running on the old metal track (9v track, discontinued 14 years ago), but what he didn't realize is that the problem is easily fixed. I too had this problem. So first let me explain what the problem is- when two wheels on an axle go around a curve the inside wheel wants to go slower than the outside wheel. For a non-powered train axle having red traction bands on both wheels can cause problems because the "grip" causes the two wheels to fight each other and in this case even contributing to a derailment. The solution is to remove exactly one red traction band from each unpowered axle. Ideally you should remove the red band from the right side of the first axle and left side of the last axle, but it will probably work if you remove exactly one red band from a given unpowered axle. In recap, you want red traction bands on all of the motorized wheels so the train will move, and then for the non-motorized axles you only want one wheel with a red traction band per axle so that the rods will turn and then for the other wheel on that axle make sure that it does NOT have a red traction band so that it can slip on the curves (don't worry about the smaller wheels, those already spin independently).Other tips- if you are only building this set for static display, you might want to slip a couple of brown 1x4 bricks and a 1x4 tile into the gaps between the cab and each hood. There are also some clever tricks using 1x4x1 panels for hiding this gap when running, but you'll need to search online for those.

Too many flaws add up to make the build and play with this set annoying and just not fun. There is an issue with the gearbox that I could never fully resolve. After many builds and re-builds to make sure I had everything right, the wheels still do not turn smoothly – there is always some gear grinding and catching (some posts on other Lego forums speculate that there may be a design/quality issue with the tan gears). Un-motorized, when I push the train on actual Lego track, the wheels in the main section often lock up and slide. The wheel sets on the front and back sections have also been problematic. When changing directions, they often seem to catch on something, get out of alignment, then lock up and slide along the track. When changing directions, they often seem to catch on something, get out of alignment, then lock up and slide along the track. Between all three components, more often than not, one is not working right. The price to buy the Powered Up components for the train is ridiculous. I can almost justify the cost of the hub since it includes all the “smarts” – but the additional cost of the Technic Large Motor is crazy. For both parts, it is basically the cost of the train itself. Out of sheer curiosity, I also tried using the significantly cheaper Powered Up Medium Linear Motor and noticed no difference in performance (maybe it matters more if you use the train to pull other railcars). My other gripe with the Powered Up components is that you have to use a smartphone and the Powered Up app to get the motor to function in any manner except start/stop (which is what you can do with the Powered Up remote). I still have old Lego 9v trains that run like they did when I bought them decades ago. That won’t be the same for anything that relies on a smartphone app.

A pleasure to construct and very worthy for adult interest but easily suitable for younger builders. Congrats to the lead designer. I was particularly pleased with the subtle brown color. The color choice has a natural "aged" patina appearance in natural light and plays down the normal shiny brick look. The details are very well done and tend to be quite authentic. It's a very solid and strong built construction. I appreciate the color coded parts that aid orientation. There was plenty of heart and soul in the design of the packaging and product. Directions were great as usual and the only caveat for me was the color contrasts in the manual we're a bit on the weak side. Other than that, good job Lego Team!
