I use HP-5 mostly in my large-format work (8x10, 4x5 9x12). It has great exposure latitude and is very forgiving. I like the way HP-5 handles high-contrast situations and delvers a beautiful negative with very smooth mid tones. As with all LF sheet film, extra care is required to prevent scratches and dust, but HP-5 is one of the most widely used emulsions because of its consistent and predictable results.

I am a photographer working in the Brooklyn area and I shoot almost exclusively at night. I aim for high quality, high contrast, low grain images...and for this I trust Ilford HP5 plus film from B+H. 8x10 film is in general going to be expensive just about everywhere you go, but at about 4 or 5 dollars a sheet from B+H, it is well worth the price. This film can easily be pushed and pulled a good 4 stops, while retaining good shadow and highlight detail in even the most extreme of situations. In the darkroom, prints from this film are gorgeous: amazing tonal range with deep blacks, screaming highlights and an impressive mid-tone range that I have not seen with any other film on the market today. If you shoot an 8x10 camera, and need superb quality film at an affordable price then LOOK NO FURTHER!

HP5+ works well in every developer I've used, from D-76 to XTOL and now to Pyrocat. It's not easy to find reasonably priced 8x10 film, and it's a format I'm drawn to. I expose this film at EI 200, a function of my testing and a preference for denser negatives that hold detail in shadow areas.

I recently purchased this film because I had the opportunity to borrow an 8x10 camera from a friend. I normally shoot with Ilford HP5 4x5 film, so I stuck with what I knew and bought the larger version. After hand processing my film it seemed to me that the 8x10 film may even be less prone to scratching than the 4x5. I'm very impressed with the quality!
Because of it's great reciprocity characteristics, my favorite film in 8x10 has been T-Max 400; it threw me off when Kodak discontinued it so I started trying other films. I make large pigment landscape prints for gallery exhibition so it was important to me to have consistency. Let's face it, when you shoot in this format, grain is really no longer a consideration so it is all about the look of the film. I have always liked Delta 100 as it scans so well but in 8x10 it is too sharp for the look I am after. I was pleasantly surprised with HP5+, it is a very forgiving film and exposed at E.I. 100 and processed in Xtol gives me the shadow detail I prefer- and a beautiful tonal pallet! Bravo to Ilford for offering this lovely emulsion in 25 sheet boxes.
Exquisite and reliable combination. Hard to find much better than this. Xtol also good with it. Examples shown contact printed as cyanotypes using B&H chemistry.
So I got the pleasure of purchasing this in person in NY store front. Amazing place awesome staff super friendly!!! If you ever can stop by. As for the film I took total of 10 shots so far and well for being that big I guess I was expecting some wider contrast on it. But for that Being an amateur I’ve learned use a ilford delta 100 for really sharp images. It’s a good all around general purpose film very forgiving. Easy to load in holders and did fine during tray development. I’d continue using it for all formats.
I’ve had this brand of film unused in 8X10 holders stored in my basement for 7 years, not even protected from moisture or humidity. COVID caused me to get out my old Korona (!) and test the film in it. Eureka! - perfect results! So I used it for a Christmas portrait of my little granddaughters. Their Mom’s so happy with it she’ll use it for their card.
HP5 Plus is the perfect film for most purposes. There may be situations where the reciprocity calculations make for some very long exposures. T-Max might be better in those situations. I tray develop it with Pyrocat-HD and the tones and smooth and consistent. After testing I expose HP5 at 200 ISO. The emulsion is not as fragile as the Bergger films. If I'm only carrying one film in my backpack, this is it.
Currently using it in studio under continuous tungsten lights. It seems an excellent film. Love the extra speed. Several exposures to get the images I am making through an old Ektar 250mm Wide-Field. I'm happy with it. Xtol for developer in Trays, 1:1 at 68 degrees for 9:40.
