You're basically trading out the Microsoft Outlook/Word ecosystem for Google's Gmail/Docs.I think this machine will lose you money in the long run, because it'll just convince you to buy a non-Windows computer in the future. You'll end up paying 3 times as much for an Apple computer, instead of 2 times as much for a better Windows computer.I personally do a lot of work (writing and browsing) on android phones or tablets. I use them with a mobile stand, blue-tooth mouse, and blue-tooth keyboard. This set up looks cool, is mobile, modular, and you can upgrade different parts of it at different times, or get multiple uses out of each device.I know this last bit of advice seems complicated, but I don't think it's *more* complicated than using this Windows S machine.

It was very slow, which I expected from a laptop this cheap, but it got the job done and the battery life was surprisingly good. What I did not expect was for it to barely last 2 months. I treated it well, never dropped it, was careful to avoid overcharging. A little over 2 months after buying it, I was using it to watch a YouTube video and the screen turned black and started occasionally flashing bright white. It's lighter than most laptops too.Note:Do not buy for any kind of gaming or running anything beyond a word processor.Sure it might be able to run 2D games, but you'll just disappoint someone trying to play games on it.The screen is bright, but the viewing angle is really shallow. Not for multitasking. It's a simple process and only costs about $17.It can be a little sluggish at times, but it runs much better than the value laptops of the past. This laptop has the same exact specs as most $300 laptops, and it's $100 cheaper.

I got this as a cheap option solely for e-learning purposes when I had time at my day job, and for any on-the-go tasks I couldn't accomplish on my MacBook (i.e. Windows required). But I'll probably be giving this away because it's not even sufficient for that.Perhaps the biggest issue, as a number of other reviewers noted, is the keyboard sometimes acts as if the Shift key is being held when it isn't. This results in CAPS characters when one is typing lowercase, inadvertent text selections, etc. A workaround is to hold Ctrl + Shift + Caps Lock for a few seconds. However, the issue should not be happening in the first place.Second, it's slow. Really, really slow. Besides startup, which is reasonably quick. But it's incredibly slow in every other regard. The viewing angle leaves a lot to be desired. I am guessing the store display was *just right* so I missed that when I was initially considering all the available options. It boots quickly, though I hate all the bloatware they keep putting on these things. I loathe Edge and installed Chrome and it is FOREVER defaulting back to Edge. There is also an issue with documents being saved as Edge web pages. I can tell it to save as a PDF and it still does it. Every time I open the document, it opens a ridiculous page on Edge. It's really annoying, but also a potential security risk. When I select a local save, I expect that. I do not want a webpage being launched when I pull up people's private information. I have searched for fixes and tried them all but my specific laptop goes right back to that every few days. If it's a glitch, it's a highly problematic one. If it's by design, it's even more terrible. Stop trying to force One Drive and Edge! Aside from that, it does what I need, which is basic office stuff for a small business. For the price, it's good. I wish I could just skip the headache of Edge and One Drive every time I need to save/open something, and see the screen better from more than one angle. It also is very fragile. It managed to pop the screen out, in my bag, without impact. I popped it back in, but that's pretty shoddy craftsmanship.

Let me start off by saying that this was a nice little laptop, but I did ultimately return it.The laptop itself is nice. Booted up quickly and got things running pretty easily. It was also my first introduction to Windows 11 which isn't as bad as I initially thought it would be.Ran some videos on YouTube, Netflix, and Disney+ without a problem, and programs like Word and Excel were working with no problem at all. Sound was decent and picture was good quality. The issue, which is really my fault and in no way an issue with the laptop, is when she was trying to play both Minecraft (Bedrock) and Roblox. There were only a few reviews and questions on both for this laptop, so hopefully this can help out some other parents (or young adults if this laptop is for you) ... MoreLet me start off by saying that this was a nice little laptop, but I did ultimately return it.The laptop itself is nice. There were only a few reviews and questions on both for this laptop, so hopefully this can help out some other parents (or young adults if this laptop is for you) out.Let me start off by saying that this laptop will run and play both games. But if your child has played either game on console or with another desktop or laptop with better specs than this one, be prepared to have them tell you how it looks a bit different and is a bit slower with movements and responses.Minecraft runs pretty well, but runs better if you go in an adjust some of the settings. The lack in response and movement is there, but for a youngster who doesn't know better, is definitely playable without too much of an issue. Like I said, unless your young person has already been playing on a better system, they won't really know too much better. The only time it slows a bit is when there is a drastic change like falls from certain heights or something where the graphics have to change and load quickly.Roblox is a bit of a hit or miss depending on the game they are playing. I do not play the game too much, but as I understand it, there are different games within the game that are a bit more intense than others, and will ask more of your system depending on which one of the games you play. Mostly like Minecraft, the games she plays on Roblox were doing ok, but definitely not as good as her previous laptop or her Xbox. So, like I said, more so there are no issues with the laptop itself. It just was not able to suit exactly what she wanted and had become accustomed to. Like I said, unless this your childs first laptop and experience playing Minecraft or Roblox, I would recommend something with a bit faster processor and a bit better graphics. Although this laptop meets the minimum specs to run both games, your kids experience will be better with a better laptop. That being said, I would definitely recommend this laptop for everyday use for things like homework, casual internet browsing, social media, and streaming some movies, shows, and videos. Definitely made me feel better about my eventual upgrade to Windows 11 on my machine and other kids' laptops. Overall, laptop is a great choice for the casual everyday user.

Ideal for Linux - Tough to use with Windows
19 June 2022

TLDR: This budget laptop is a great deal for the price with one caveat -- install Linux (if you know what you're doing when it comes to that sort of thing). If you run it with the default Windows installation, you may be disappointed.Long Version: I approached this purchase on the lookout for the cheapest non-Chromebook I could find with halfway decent specs. My goal was specifically to find a wallet-friendly machine on which to run Linux as I learn programing/development and progress through a computer science degree. I already own a powerful iMac and an excellent Lenovo Yoga 9i, so I can complete all of my demanding or productive work on those -- I wanted something new to explore and play with. Dual-booting is annoying, and running an OS on a virtual machine ... MoreTLDR: This budget laptop is a great deal for the price with one caveat -- install Linux (if you know what you're doing when it comes to that sort of thing). I already own a powerful iMac and an excellent Lenovo Yoga 9i, so I can complete all of my demanding or productive work on those -- I wanted something new to explore and play with. Dual-booting is annoying, and running an OS on a virtual machine just doesn't have the same gut feeling, so I opted to find a suitable (and affordable) laptop to use as a project machine.I found this at a great price in a Best Buy retail store (far cheaper than at other retailers, including online), and though the specs are minimal, I felt it was an acceptable compromise for the purpose and price I had in mind. They only had two models available (in the box) with no display out, so I took a risk on the aesthetics and feel of the machine, but it worked out for the best. The laptop is solid, compact, light, and the textured finish has a nice feel to it.Much to my surprise, the keyboard is a delight to use -- the keys really feel great, perfect for coding. The touchpad is fine, though a bit choppy at times, but perhaps you won't notice or care.I haven't had a chance to test the built-in webcam or microphone, but I wouldn't expect anything spectacular at this price point. The speakers are fairly unremarkable, as most in this price range are.The CPU and preinstalled RAM obviously meet the bare-minimum requirements of modern computing, but it can noticeably lag at times, especially if running the OEM Windows install. Installing Ubuntu instead has helped tremendously with this - navigating the OS, I have no lag whatsoever (not the case out-of-the-box). Either way, you're better off focusing on a single task than trying to multitask too much. This brings us to the caveat: Out of curiosity I booted up the computer for the first time to the stock Windows 11 OS to evaluate out-of-the-box performance. It was rough. The first (and only) task I executed was opening up the Edge browser to the default home screen, and it was painful. Extremely choppy, unresponsive, and the machine was obviously struggling to load such a generic page on a known fast network. If you have any serious work that you need to carry out in Windows, I would suggest spending a bit more to gain more stability and functionality from a different machine. If, on the other hand, you're a patient and forgiving person, and either just have casual use in mind or intend to install a lighter and more hardware-friendly OS, then this computer should be fine.As I said, I installed the latest Ubuntu release, and I couldn't be happier. The new OS is WAY lighter, faster, and snappier running on this machine than Windows was. When considering that this machine has just 4GB of hardware RAM and an economy-class processor, I'm both impressed and more than satisfied with my purchase. It really is a night-and-day comparison.I used to own one of the old 13" black Macbooks from around 2007, and both the look and physical feel of this machine give me vintage vibes from that special time. I love it. After a simple swap of the stock OS, the computer feels like it could have sold for two or three times the $170 I paid for it.Conclusion: If you're looking for an affordable laptop without any fancy features, this might be it, but you will probably be frustrated at some point by its entry-level specs if you plan to run it stock out of the box. It excels at lightweight and focused use -- don't get greedy and your $170 will be well spent.Bonus round: The attached photo was taken with a video paused in one Firefox tab and this review pending submission in another, with nothing else going on. You can see in the screenshot that the CPU is doing fine, but the physical RAM is approaching capacity. This is what I mean about multitasking -- tread lightly and you'll be fine.

Lasted Less Than 24 Hours...
19 April 2023

To say I'm disappointed is an understatement...I bought this for my oldest to do school work on, we picked it up 4/18 at around 11am, brought it home, set it up and it was slower but it worked. She did probably 5 hours of school work, put it away in the laptop sleeve and was done for the day.Fast forward to today 4/19 around 9am and it won't start. Its plugged in, the light on the left side is flashing like it wants to do something when you press power but that's it. It doesn't start, doesn't make any noise like its about to start, nothing. It would've been the perfect laptop for what she needed it for. UGH! Now I have to waste part of our day today getting it returned and either grabbing this same one (which at this point I really don't want to do, knowing my ... MoreTo say I'm disappointed is an understatement...I bought this for my oldest to do school work on, we picked it up 4/18 at around 11am, brought it home, set it up and it was slower but it worked. Will not impress you, but that's not the point.

Let's face it, this computer is complete barebones. It has a keyboard and a mouse and a functioning screen, and that's about it. I had a 2011 Macbook pro that had one foot in the grave and currently on a college budget, so I bought this to get me through the rest of the semester. Yes, it comes with "S" mode turned on, but just go to the Microsoft support page and it will literally take 5 seconds to turn off. I have no idea how people on here claim that it took them "3 hours" when there is a guide that Microsoft posted. The computer itself isn't exciting, at all. The speakers on my iPhone 4 are better, the screen on my 11 year old Mac is better, and the trackpad is one of the worst. But, for $200-250 what do you really want? It is not blazing fast, and if you have multiple tabs open you bet it is going to slow down. Personally, I can't believe how barebones the specs of this thing are, but still, it manages to work perfectly fine day to day.If you are looking for a performance laptop, this for sure isn't it. But, if you are a broke college student like me or just need a laptop in a pinch, then this little thing is great and has saved me from headaches trying to restore my old Macbook. One bonus... for a tiny laptop this thing has great battery life. My Mac would only last a pathetic 25 minutes before dying, this thing lasts over 5 hours and can get through the day with no issues.

happy with it except the audio
28 December 2021

I have had this a few months and overall I like it a lot. I use it mainly to watch online videos. I run the HDMI output to my video projector. For web sites like youtube I play the videos off my Fire Stick, but some of the videos I watch are on free-speech platforms like Locals and those aren't all available on Fire Stick. The next thing I have been working on doing with this laptop is to see whether I can use it as a music server when I am working out. My plan was to run songs on the laptop on itunes and run the audio from the headphone jack to a bookshelf stereo. One challenge was that my itunes library is too big to fit on the laptop's storage. My plan was to run songs on the laptop on itunes and run the audio from the headphone jack to a bookshelf stereo. One challenge was that my itunes library is too big to fit on the laptop's storage. Fortunately I just discovered that you can open itunes in a way that lets you select an alternative itunes library. So I was able to open itunes so that it is linked to my itunes library which I have on a flash drive plugged into the USB port. Looks like it works just fine. My one remaining concern is that it appears that the sound output from the headphone jack is weak and not very good fidelity. I tried outputting it to my stereo receiver and I had to crank the volume way up and the bass and treble seem poor. Now this would appear to be a weakness not just for my particular application but in general if you want to listen to music from the laptop. The sound quality is poor if you listen to the laptop with earbuds. I think the audio straight out of the laptop's speakers is pretty poor also.I think the sound quality is better if you are exporting the signal from the laptop's HDMI port, but that's an awkward interface if you are just want the audio output and not the video. My HP desktop PC puts out decent audio so I don't see why they can't make all their computers that way.Overall, though, it's a good laptop.
