I already owned this jacket and loved it so much I bought one on sale for my sister who is still carrying 'heavy stuff' for hiking and backpacking and needed an assist lightening her laod. I shaved a pound off of my base pack weight by carrying the Helium jacket and rain pants vs. my heavier options. Since I carry rain gear as safety gear o on all of my hiking and backpacking trips this reduced that 'dead weight' while providing gore-tex protection. (11.4 oz for jacket and pants together). These also function as wind pants and upper/lower extra layers. The new colors are very attractive, my own set was grey upper/lower and a hiking buddy did compare me to the 'Michelin Man' when we were on top of a windy mountain with the wind whipping and puffing out my grey ... MoreI already owned this jacket and loved it so much I bought one on sale for my sister who is still carrying 'heavy stuff' for hiking and backpacking and needed an assist lightening her laod. Pro tip: get a non-grey jacket.I do have a different slightly heavier rain jacket with pit zips that I bring when I know there is rain in the forecast and expect to spend some significant time hiking in it, since that is pretty key for ventilation to prevent sweating as you hike. For the other 90% of my hikes I carry this one.It has performed well hiking in rain (that forecast is not always perfect so I've done this a number of time). It is waterproof, my issue is more with sweating inside it and getting damp that way. Still, perfect way to carry 'safety' gear and minimize weight.

Everything this jacket is advertised to do it does. It does a decent job of keeping drizzle out and transporting moisture away from your body. The fabric is uniquely textured and has a nice comfortable feel even next to the skin. The cut is tailored somewhere between athletic and causal, and for me this is perfect. It's a great looking garment! The one caveat is that this is not a truly technical piece, it's more suited as travel-ware in your luggage or pack; something for a casual hike or to wear round town in light rain. Without pit zips to dump heat I can imagine I'd get too hot and clammy on extended accents or when carrying a loaded pack. I wouldn't count on it shedding water in a downpour either, but for the price, it's excellent at what it can accomplish. I ... MoreEverything this jacket is advertised to do it does. If you know you know. Some women just need more space in their jackets, and rain jackets I've worn in the past are either too tight somewhere, or not flexible or breathable, or too poor quality to last. This jacket is none of those things. I love the fit, the way I don't overheat or freeze in it (and I stay dry!). The hood is large enough to cinch down over my brimmed hat and small enough to pull tightly against a steady wind. I've yet to have any moisture seep through. I would have loved a chest pocket but I do appreciate the roominess and the easy zippers on the hand pockets. In short, this is the rain jacket I've been looking for for years. No more clamminess or dull colours; I'm almost looking forward to rainy days on trail now!

Bought this at REI p a few weeks ago. I wanted to love this jacket. It is light weight, is from a reputable company, has nice features and is a lovely lilac color. Unfortunately, the jacket leaked. I just came home from a short hike where I was caught in a rain storm. The rain soaked through the arm area and most of the rest of the jacket. Remarkably, the contents of one pocket ( where I kept ymy driver's license) remained dry. But that was it. I was out under heavy, protective foliage for a short period of time, so this should not have happened. Before writing this review I actually checked OR's literature and this jacket was supposed to be waterproof. I was supposed to take it up Mt. Washington in two weeks, which I won't. I don't want to risk getting wet there.
Excellent ultra light rain jacket for backpacking and camping. I got the XL version with no under arm zippers (160lbs, 5"7) broad shoulders. I found it to be breathable and have no issue without the extra zippers. If that is important to you, there are other versions of this jacket available but more $$$. It fits roomy so I can add warmer layers under when needed. The fit is sized well. I could have fit the Large but prefer the extra space. I have used it on one trip so far on a canoe trip and it help up perfectly. I stayed dry in the rain. I plan to take it on a 7 day hike next. Its so light, and folds into a tiny pouch. You hardly know it is there.
As much as I’ve tried to like OR equipment over the years it has mostly let me down. The O2 jackets have been the last straw. These jackets soak up rain like a sponge. My wife bought 2 because one was a bit small. The glued in pockets quickly fell off. But the big issue is they are not rain worthy. I tried different DWR ( NikWax and polyurethane) and it didn’t help. The taping looks good but the jackets wet out in very light rain. Sorry OR. You’ve got a lot of products on the market and it would be convenient to use your stuff, but these are outdoor products and if they don’t protect me from the weather I won’t use them again. Garbage stuff.
Up updating my gear little by little to ultalight. This rain jacket was everything it was advertised as, breathable, lightweight at 6 oz, burgundy color was perfect, size small was roomy enough to fit a down jacket & even a fleece layer. The cons are no pockets, no velcro at the wrists and the biggy was, reviews stated it got soaked when wet. That's because you need to reapply the sealant coating from time to time. So I decided to go with Lightheart's rainjacket, also ~6 oz, and is a non-breathable that's really waterproof. It has zippers underneath the arms for ventilation, it also has 2 small pockets and velcro tabs at the wrist. I haven't used it yet, but at this point it checked all my boxes. As long as you know the difference, this jacket might work for you. It ... MoreUp updating my gear little by little to ultalight. I absolutely loved this OR helium jacket. I had been eyeing it for a year and got it on a member sale. The first day I wore it the zipper got off track… while she is one of the prettiest rain jackets I’ve ever owned I don’t think she’s functional enough. There is zero ventilation so even tho she’s light, it hot as can be. I also didn’t like it didn’t have a stow pocket. If they added ventilation this jacket would be great. Awesome repellant and definitely waterproof. I also decided to return this and opt for the OR gortex jacket- just seems more practical of a buy, but specially with the increase in erratic weather. This jacket is great, will keep you dry but probably not in a downpour, which is all we get now anyways
I wore this rain jacket in the rain for the first time, and wow! It's not at all waterproof. It's unfortunately not even water resistant. I wore a denim dress with pockets underneath, and when it started to rain, I moved my cell phone from the denim dress pocket to the rain jacket pocket to keep it protected. Well, the rain jacket pocket soaked right through to the phone! My keys in the denim dress pocket stayed dry. This rain jacket is less water resistant than denim! I'm honestly shocked, as I've bought outdoor garments from this brand before and they've worked.
I live in one of the rainiest places in WA. I expect a lot of my gear regarding rain.First, the pros: 1. fits great! I’m 5’1, 160 lbs. I’m thick, got the Large, and it fits over other clothes and my hips perfectly. The chartreuse color is a favorite. 2. very light, breathable and packable. 3. Taped zipper and seams keep water out well. And the cons: 1. The fabric does not wick. This is a huge con. I’ve treated with nikwax I don’t know how many times, because the fabric has never wicked well. Within about a half hour, the fabric is taking on water. An hour in, shoulders and chest are fully soaked through. I would return, but I was too optimistic and couldn’t accept defeat early enough for REI’s newer return policy. Still looking for the right wax, cause the garment ... MoreI live in one of the rainiest places in WA. I expect a lot of my gear regarding rain.First, the pros: 1. fits great! I’m 5’1, 160 lbs.
