Always wanted a Martin but "settled" for this Gibson

I have several acoustic guitars that cost less than one thousand: Yamaha, Taylor and Takamine. Over the years, I played many high end guitars just to see what it was like, with the hope of one day buying an expensive model once I saved enough money. Of all the higher end brands I tried out, I always felt that Martin guitars were the most balanced sounding, so I had it in my mind that a Martin would be my "wish" guitar. I felt that Gibsons were overpriced in comparison. I have played the Martin D-28 most often since a friend owns one and thought that would be the guitar I would buy. My only beef with the D-28 is that I usually play in a seated position and the wide body of the D-28 puts a lot of stress on my right shoulder. Regardless, when the time came that I had enough money to buy my wish guitar, I went to a local music shop with the intention of buying a Martin, most likely a D-28, but if there was a different Martin model that struck me, I would be open to it. After trying a few different Martins, nothing really grabbed me and the D-28 felt like a "safe pick." I mentioned this to the salesperson besides mentioning in passing that some of my favorite artists had played the Gibson SJ-200 but I had never played one since it was well out of my price range. Then he pulled this guitar off the wall. At first, I had my usual reaction--overpriced Gibson because this guitar is one thousand more than the D-28, though it comes with electronics while the standard D-28 doesnt, which brings their respective prices closer than a grand when you factor in adding electronics to the D-28 unless you want just an acoustic. I prefer to have electronics since I play solo or with others at independent living residences or nursing homes. Then I played the SJ-200, and I got hooked. I put it down on a stand just to compare the D-28 and while I did so, another customer picked it up and tried it out. I told him I was considering buying it so I hoped he wasnt trying to steal it away from me since I tried it first! I asked what he thought of it and he felt it was a great guitar, much better than the D-28. This definitely made me feel justified. What a beautiful sounding guitar whether strumming with plenty of power or fingerpicking with a nice deep, rich, balanced sound. The body is thinner than a D-28 which puts less pressure on my shoulder too. The neck has a smooth feel due to the lacquer finish, which I prefer to the non lacquered or "woodier" feel of the D-28 neck. I don't even need to plug this guitar into my amp because it sounds so beautiful, but it doesn't lose anything plugged into the amp either. I have it in natural color but it also comes in a Rosewood burst too. This model is about $1300 less than the standard SJ-200 because it has rosewood back and sides vs. maple and has less bling in terms of the tuners, bridge, pickguard design and electronics, though both are LR Baggs. I felt guilty that I didnt buy a Martin, but I have been very happy with this guitar. It changed my opinion about Gibson acoustics. I still havent crossed off a Martin down the road, but if you are looking for that "wish" guitar, you should give this one a try.

I purchased an open box J200 after talking with Derek (Musicians Friend) and receiving pictures of the blemishes. I have trouble finding them. I also read a review posted 7/26/16 about another open box purchase and it helped me pull the trigger. I can't believe I now own such a wonderful guitar. The looks are absolutely awesome and besides being very playable, it sounds even better. The Natural finish with the flamed curly maple looks much better in person than in pictures. I jam weekly with a group of 10 and we are all mic'd and plugged in. I found in order to blend in, I had to unplug. I've worked with the electronics system at home and they really sounds good too. I couldn't have gotten luckier than purchasing the open box guitar, but I won't be doing it again ... MoreI purchased an open box J200 after talking with Derek (Musicians Friend) and receiving pictures of the blemishes. geat story , great ending...i purchased from michael mattice a natural sj200 standard. love the look and nice play. about a month after i bought it it started playing funning and did not sound as it should. i took the guitar to my luthier thinking it might need an adjustment. luthier said i can make it better but cannot make it perfect. wah, i called G C Michael mattice explaining. he said let me see what i can do. 2 days later i received a email fro gibson in tennessee. i shipped the guitar with my luthier report asking the to fix the guitar prop or replace. it took 3 months but gibson sent me a new replacement. thanjks gibson..loving the guitar. i have bought many guitars from G C....thanks G C and Gibson for doing the right thing.

It's a Gibson SJ-200 Alright, BUT...
4 January 2018

This guitar is comfortable and fun to play. It came well packaged and protected. My only beef is that someone polished it and did a terrible job of it. Swirl marks are very noticeable. Nothing that can't be remedied, but for the price I paid, this is looks like an open-box item, although the advertisement made no mention of that. I've seen open box items with better finishes than this one. I'll buff it out myself, but I'm disappointed that I have to do that. I would recommend this to a friend, but with a word of caution.

Not what I expected.

This is not what I would expect from Gibson, but, I see differently now. There is no customer support from Gibson. NONE. I see the defect in my guitar in almost all other Gibsons I look at now. Because of the Bridge problems, I have tuning issues. It does not play evenly up the neck. It appears lots of people knew this, but, I was never told, lest to down talk a Legend Guitar like a Gibson. ( I'm talking about the Montana Acoustics). Look at the pictures of these guitars closely around the bridge area, you'll see the bridge pins all at different angles. It comes with a very cheap case.

I wanted to buy a J-200 from the first time I played one. When MF offered one through an open box sale, I decided to investigate. The rep I worked with (Tom) sent pictures and worked with me above and beyond the call of duty. I decided to pull the trigger and am happy I did. The "blemishes" are almost impossible to find (I can do it only in direct sunlight and one I can find only about 50% of the time). The instrument arrived in one day and was almost perfect right out of the box. Would I buy open box again? You bet!

I had a great experience with Kenny's music whilst purchasing my guitar, they set the guitar up for me before it was well packed and posted using DHL. Ross was the guy who assisted me and kept me well informed by phone and email. I bought my guitar with pay half now the other half interest free for 6 months, no brainer. I would definitely recommend Kenny's music. Thanks

The undeniable king of acoustics
13 February 2021

I'd been in the market for a new acoustic for a while but never really knew which one to go for. Luckily, PMT in Birmingham has a fantastic range of acoustics and their super helpful staff were extremely patient with me as I tried about a dozen different models, including various Taylors and Martins. For some reason, I had always thought that Taylor and Martin guitars would be the cream of the crop when it came to acoustics and, as such, had never considered Gibsons even though I own several Gibson electrics. Whilst it might be a strange thing to say, whilst it does have a great pickup in it, it feels more like a traditional acoustic guitar than any of the others that I played. Whatever your style - fingerpicking through to power chord rock - this one does it all.Granted, it ain't cheap. However, if you're only ever going to buy one acoustic to keep forever, I would heartily recommend trying a Gibson Montana SJ200. If it's good enough for the likes of Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Pete Townsend, then it's good enough for me!
