My Edge 1030 which I've had for some years, was beginning to fail, needing constant restarts, failing to work in cold weather, sometimes the battery wouldn't last the ride, so all in all the unit was generally no longer to be relied upon. Due to this experience I was a bit skeptical of getting another Garmin, but finally after a lot of research I opted for the Solar. I'm very happy with it so far. Much easier to program the screens, the battery life especially, is outstanding. My favorite thing is seeing a depiction of the route I'm about to ride on the opening screen, I no longer have to scroll through the lists of saved courses to find and select the right ride. The graphics are generally easier to read and I also like the enhancement to the rear radar alerts. The ... The one piece that is missing, and why at one point I considered the Hammerhead very strongly, is the ability to see the profile of a climb when you're not following a preselected route. I would also have like a stronger indication of the next turn, on our night gravel rides it's a bit hard to see what's coming up because the text and the direction arrow is rather small. Generally I'm delighted with the new unit, and it seems like the integration with the Connect app is much better. I often had to restart the 1030 over and over again, turn bluetooth on and off on the phone and endure a lot of frustration trying to get it to synch. The App sees the 1040 almost immediately which is much better. All in all, so far, a great product.

I bought this after the battery in my ageing Edge 520 started giving up, as I'm planning on riding longer off-road rides I went for the 1040 Solar to maximise both battery life & screen size (to make the map easier to see). It hasn't disappointed, it needed topping up once from a power bank on a 3 day trip of constant navigation, the solar charging being really impressive on the sunny 3rd day. I'm not expecting such strong charging in more typical British weather but it is handy to have.As ever with Garmin, the menu interface takes a bit of getting used to but I can't fault the technology & features. Being able to upload courses straight from my phone is nice & easy, and when following them the navigation has proved easy to follow & accurate. The climb-data feature is really interesting, & handy for pacing on climbs you don't know - less nasty surprises when you turn a corner! Getting my profiles & data screens setup was actually easier than on my old 520, the touch screen editing proving an improvement there. There are so many features that I'm not sure I'll use them all, the workouts function is most likely the next I try.

My 8 year old Garmin Edge 810's touch screen wasn't responding along the far right perimeter and decided to look for a replacement. I loved the 810. It brought me from LA to Boston, Astoria OR to Rapid City, SD and San Francisco to Pueblo CO and hundreds of other rides in between. Many friends recommended Wahoo or Kamoot and after looking at them determined that for my riding and priorities, I preferred the Garmin ecosystem. I looked at several models and even the solar powered ones and landed on the 1040 non-solar powered one. Love the wireless upload to Connect, Love the synch feature with my phone for alerts, (won't have to greet a cranky spouse on arriving home about missing a text or phone call), crisp text on screen I can actually read.Love the hill profiles ... Love how synching with my bike sensors was effortless. This device lets me enjoy my ride by giving me confidence I'll always know where I am and that the battery will easily last even my longest ride without needing to recharge even after multiple day rides. I haven't yet drained the battery but I don't I expect I will.I don't like the fact that the frame needs a separately purchased rubber gasket to protect the edges. That's a design omission. I suppose it's like getting a case for your phone... But still. This is a bike computer that will be outside in the elements not sitting in a climate controlled environment. Garmin should've known better. On face value it is expensive. With advances in chip technology it still baffles me that bike computers are still nearly the price of a high end tablet. I'm still mad I couldn't resist purchasing it on principle. But I did need a replacement and I wanted something that will take me on my next decade of riding. Bottom line is I do love the unit. Just wish someone had given it to me for my birthday.

I have been biking/touring for 10 years, and have used a simple speed/odometer computer and maps to navigate. I finally decided to enter the 21st Century and get a GPS computer. I spent a lot of time researching devices from Wahoo, Hammerhead and Garmin before I made the decision to buy the Edge 1040. The extensive sets of detailed maps, advanced navigation capabilities, multi-band GNSS and best-in-class battery life were the deciding factors.I had read the on-line manual, reviews and forums before the 1040 arrived, so I was familiar with how to set up the data screens to my preferences. The initial set-up was easy, and I have not had any issues during the 10 rides I have taken so far. I like the data screens with 4-6 windows. The information is large enough to ... The initial set-up was easy, and I have not had any issues during the 10 rides I have taken so far. I like the data screens with 4-6 windows. The information is large enough to easily read, and I can scroll left or right to get all the information I need. The map, elevation and ClimbPro screens are great, and I have added data windows to make them even better.I added Garmin speed sensors to my two bikes (CAAD10 and Surly LHT), gave them different names, and have had no issues connecting with the sensors. I have manually calibrated the wheel circumferences to mileage markers on a bike trail, and both sensors give accurate distances (within 0.15%). I have to remember to select the correct bike in GC Gear so that the mileage is applied to the bike I used.I liked the out-front mount that came with the 1040, and am using it on the CAAD10. For the LHT, I need to use a stem mount. I did not like the stem mount that uses rubber bands. I have replaced it with a K-Edge Boost stem mount, which works very well on the LHT angled stem.To get the latest software updates, I signed up for the Beta Software Program. I have had no issues with the updates so far (currently at 15.22).I use RideWithGPS to create routes. The setup to synch RWGPS routes to the 1040 was straightforward. I can create or edit a course in RWGPS, pin the new course or unpin/pin the edited course, synch my iPhone GC app with the 1040, and the new/edited courses immediately show up on the 1040.There are so many features on the 1040 that I am not using (heart rate, power, indoor trainer, etc.). I doubt if I ever use them, but the features that I am using have been fantastic. Glad I made the purchase!
I decided to upgrade my bike computer from a Wahoo Element Bolt V2 to the Edge 1040 after seeing reviews about the battery life. Having ridden it for a couple weeks, I am completely blown away with what this computer has to offer. The battery life is (conservatively) 32-24ish hours of runtime with normal use, and that isn't even using battery saver mode. The touchscreen is also fantastic and is responsive even when covered in rain or when I am using full fingered gloves. There are a TON of features in this computer and honestly it is a bit overwhelming at first. Watching a couple of quick videos and tutorials is totally worth it if you are new to Garmin computers; it now feels like second nature to use it.I debated for quite a while on the solar vs non-solar ... I am sure there are use cases where someone may want the extended battery, but with how long this battery lasts and the added feature of a USB-C port, you can easily gain a couple of hours of runtime just by plugging it in for a few minutes at a coffee stop :) Plus the screen resolution is much sharper without the solar glass when I have compared with other riders I know that have the solar.Love this computer and I'm super happy I made the switch.
As a cyclist in East Montgomery, AL, I’m always looking for ways to make my rides safer. That’s why I was so excited to get my Edge 1040. It provides me with an abundance of information that helps me make my rides safer and more enjoyable. The map feature gives me an updated view of the roads I ride on. This is especially helpful when I’m unfamiliar with an area or if I’m riding in unfamiliar terrain (I moved to Alabama to work on an Air Force Base there). Knowing where I’m going and being able to plan my route ahead of time can make a huge difference in my safety.I’ve also programmed alerts for hydration and fuel. Having this information always at my fingertips helps me stay on top of my hydration and fuel needs so I can stay safe and comfortable on my ride. Finally, I’ve attached a versa taillight to my bike computer. This allows me to be warned well in advance of a car approaching from the rear. This is especially helpful on long rides, and I’ve found that it gives me added peace of mind as I’m out on the road. Overall, my Edge has been a great asset in making my rides safer and more enjoyable. Having more information helps me plan my rides better, take the necessary precautions to stay hydrated and fueled, and to be warned of approaching vehicles. If you’re looking for ways to make your rides safer, get the 1040.
My first bike computer, as I am new to cycling. I heard this is the best there is, so I bought it. So disappointing. Before, I tried using my cell phone, but battery life is short and the touchscreen acts up in the rain. On the phone, the apps like Ride with GPS are terrible in that displayed metrics are in tiny fonts. So, what's good about the Garmin is the touchscreen doesn't act up in the rain, the battery life is long, the displayed metrics can be big and hold, and layout can be customized, and it syncs to phone app easily. The bad: totally unintuitive. Using it for a month, I still can't figure out how to do most things. I started a training plan. If I fall behind a day, I try to do the missed workout. The bad: totally unintuitive. Using it for a month, I still can't figure out how to do most things. I started a training plan. If I fall behind a day, I try to do the missed workout. It seems to run but at the end does not save or give me credit for the workout. The screen is fine for text metrics, but trying to read a map on it is impossible. Sometimes on my rides it detects a climb ahead and starts CLIMB!! mode. Except the map is too tiny to read what turns I need to make to stay on the climbing route. I have no idea how to plan a route, so I have to figure out my routes on my own and just go ride and navigate on my own. This seems weird given the bike computer is supposed to work as a gps navigation device. I guess this will never happen because cycling is too small a niche, but I see an opportunity for either a better cycling phone app or a bike computer with a big beautiful 6"+ screen and intuitive controls. Until then , the Garmin 1040 is better than nothing.
I'm not the target rider for this unit. I bought for solar feature and with UK touring in mind that's prob'ly the only technological marginal gain I could appreciate, and It replaces my Edge 810 which needs retiring after a decade of service. If that could have held on 'til a 840, or 540 was released I may have chosen one of those instead.Any road, I'll admit it needs a bit of a leap in mindset. And investment in peripherals. I don't have a power metre, or fitness watch/whoop, so most of the health stuff in Garmin Connect is useless: Resting Heart Rate, HRV, stress Score, Fitness Age - all unusable. Annoyingly if you manually set a RHR, or even if you bother to put on your HRM and do the stress score daily, that RHR does not feed into the other scores, so it ... Annoyingly if you manually set a RHR, or even if you bother to put on your HRM and do the stress score daily, that RHR does not feed into the other scores, so it defaults to take the lowest HR from my workouts which can be almost double. Also you need to keep checking you zones Power and HR as updates can wipe them. I realise this is mostly GC's UI so you can't judge the head unit for that, but it.means you have to go through and disable a lot of the stamina, climbing and workout features, to the point where I have more turned off than on. Again, it's not a slight on the hardware as much as a incompatibility with the user. If I keep this for 10 years also I may end up with a fitness watch and then toggle on a few more options, but for now it's almost justified as a investment in futureproofing.
I ride a lot 18000mi/year, and my 530 and I had ups and downs where the most annoying issue was syncing my long rides. It would take too long, fail sometimes require frequent resetup. So after some debate I decided to upgrade to the new 1040 with the new UX.Great at first but after riding with it for a week now and about 700mi, I lost already two rides due to dumb button placement on the touchscreen. Before purchasing the Edge 1040 I was afforded the opportunity of trying out a friends Edge 1030. First ride I noticed how much easier it was to navigate with the 1030. After doing some additional research I made the decision to purchase the Edge 1040. I've been using the 1040 for about a month for indoor roller rides, outdoor road rides and gravel. Setting up activity profiles is a snap. The larger touch sensitive screen enables me to set up Data Screens that are specific to the kind of ride I'm doing, more data with improved legibility. Customization is a very simple process. Navigation, mapping, turn by turn directions capabilities, makes this unit a must for the avid cyclist looking for larger more legible directions. The Edge 1040 is so feature rich, that I doubt I will utilize all the features. As an example, training, and biometrics capabilities. Nice to know that the Edge 1040 has these capabilities and that if the need to monitor arises, I have the ability to use them.Bottom line, well worth the investment.
