(1,573 reviews)

Optimally designed for silent computing with high density noise-reducing material throughout the case for maximum sound absorption, while not. compromising on airflow and cooling capabilities Extensive water cooling support for a case of this size; housing radiators up to 420mm in the top and 360mm in the front. Equipped with new tool-less ModuVent fan slot covers allowing the user to install more fans if desired or keep fan slots covered to maximize sound absorption. Including two Fractal Design Dynamic GP14 140mm fans developed for superlative airflow while still maintaining low noise levels. Maintaining a dust-free interior with the help of dust filters that cover front and bottom air intakes that are easy to access from the front on the case. Newly configured front door with dual side mounting to better fit your work space. Highlighting 2 dedicated SSD mounts cleanly placed behind the motherboard tray that feature innovative new brackets delivering a tool-free installation and removal. The HDD cage system holds up to eight 3.5” or 2.5” drives and is more adaptable than ever, allowing the user to modify the case layout according to personal preference with more places to relocate the cages. The ODD cage can easily be removed to gain additional interior space; the area can be freed up to allow for increased airflow, to provide a new place for HDD cage mounting or to make more room for water cooling components. Sturdy metal HDD trays provide excellent dampening features for the hard drives while providing better airflow through the cage with an updated, more open design. The new and innovative Quick Release System on the left side of the case provides secure mounting of the left side panel, yet grants quick and easy access to the system. Three-speed fan controller is strategically integrated in the front panel and supports up to 3 fans. Define R5 model is available with window side panel.

Price is a bit steep, but worth what you get. Ive always tried to get a case around $50. If youre looking to air cool your system and need ample air flow, spend the money, you wont regret it. Ive had many cases and ive seen so many people refer this case (fractal design) in the past and never wanted to spend the extra $50-$75. If you can find this case for $100, grab it, totally worth it. I found it on here for $99 no tax, free shipping. *Obviously your fan profile will determine how quiet the system really is, im not sure the dampeners really come into play here, but it is overall quieter than all my previous cases. Beware, fitting issues with 280 AIO coolers

So the biggest issue I have with the case is room at the top. If you install a 280mm rad on top and want to obviously add a 120 or 140mm fan at the top back for exhaust, it won't fit with both installed. Not even close. it's literally about a half inch off even with a 120mm fan. Also, the 280 rad butts right up against the 5.25 drives at top if you choose to use the 5.25 cage. The rad pipes block the sata data port on the top drive. I do use/need 2 5.25 drives (don't ask why or huh?, but I do). If you use a right angle sata cable it'll fit barely but so tight I worry it'll cause a leak since it's so tight against the pipe fitting. This is with a Corsair H115i 280mm cooler rad. yeah I could use an external USB drive instead of the 5.25 drives but don't really want ... MoreSo the biggest issue I have with the case is room at the top. This is with a Corsair H115i 280mm cooler rad. yeah I could use an external USB drive instead of the 5.25 drives but don't really want to. Plus, an external bluray burner is way more expensive and don't want to use up 2 USB 3.0 ports. Yeah I could go with a 240 rad but want'd better cooling with low rpm fans for less fan noise. Also, you have to remove the rad fans or all of it completely if you need to get at the CPU fan headers and the 8 pin CPU on the mobo. Or, anything else you need to get to at the top of the mobo. There is also ram clearance issues if you use tall ram sticks like the Corsair Dominators. My mobo I/O shield cover is tight a tight fit...very tight fit. The rad and fans together are only 50mm thick so why not make a case that’ll clear that plus maybe a little extra for thicker rads? Don't get it. They should've made the case an inch taller for clearance with a 280 rad and top exhaust fan would fit together. I looked at the manual and the fan config options before buying and it shows you could install a 280mm rad and a 120 and/or 140 exhaust fan. NOPE!!! I called them and they said that "yeah corsair coolers are longer than other rads so it won't fit with an added top exhaust fan". That's rediculous!!! I blame more Fractal than corsair. They say that corsair is the only rads that are spaced more in the center of the 2 rads, hence, they are longer. I wouldn't have an issue if you could at least add a 120 back exhaust fan. BUT, that won't even fit either. It's still about a 1/3 inch off. That's crazy you can't fit even add a 120mm fan. The plastic side panel window scratches VERY easily. Even with a paper towel. Use microfiber only. With the case lit up at night...you can see every scratch through the plastic window. Last thing, the top modular panel plastic clips break really easy. I was very careful and they still broke off when taking the panels off for the first time. You have to pinch the clamps to release but they are on so tight, which is why I believe they broke. Anyway, I gave 2 eggs because there are more cons than pros. I like the simplistic look and has 5.25 and tons of 3.5 drive bays which is why I bought it. It's about the only case out there that has the all the features I wanted except for the limited room on top. I hope they come out with a mid tower with better room on top and glass window. I would defiantly buy that instead. Hope it comes soon.

Classic PC Case

It appears I'm a huge fan of Fractal cases. I have the Torrent for my main "rig", the Focus G for a retro build, and now I've chosen the Define R5 for my upcoming home data server. Why the Define R5? Because of the sound dampening features and (of course) because of the abundance of drive trays. I don't need a high airflow case for my data server, so the rather closed nature of this case shouldn't be a major issue. I'm impressed by the quality of the materials, but I haven't actually built the server yet. The sound dampening panels are heavy and seem like they'll be effective. I'm going to move the rear fan to the front and have no rear fan.

Good airflow design/filtering, poor material quality

Got this case today, started to install new motherboard. Put in 7 brass spacers/standoffs, very gently, using the included plastic "knob" for tightening them up. Started to screw in the 8th brass spacer/standoff (again, very gently), after a few turns the upper portion of this spacer/standoff simply broke off... Had to literally drill the remaining "stub" out of the spacer hole, which created some metal shavings which were VERY annoying to collect (and I'm not sure I collected all of those - some remaining brass particle might still shorten out my motherboard or video card in future). The thread of that spacer hole was also destroyed. So yea, Fractal dudes - how about spending a couple more dollars on including a GOOD QUALITY spacers/standoffs with your cases? Something from a more reliable supplier. Also, as some other people have pointed out - the case's steel is pretty thin and there's not much insulation on side/top panels so the case is actually pretty noisy (I mean it allows noisy fans to be clearly heard), regardless of manufacturer's advertising claims.

Great case if you have lots of old school hard drives
27 March 2024

Very well built case. It's wide, wider than the old ATX standard but it makes it nice and easy to load up the motherboard and hard drives. Speaking of hard drives, I would only recommend this case if you have lots of legacy hard drives. I do, and most of the cases now are not equipped to handle more than one old 3.5 inch spinning drive. This case can handle a boatload. I have 4 old drives and a Bluray burner and they all fit nicely, as I skipped a space for each drive to give them plenty of breathing room. It has room for 8 drives I think. The construction is top notch, all the necessary hardware is nicely packaged in separate see thru bags. I'm very pleased with this purchase, just what I was looking for.

This would be a perfect product if they at least sold some perforated replacement muduvent covers for at least the top of the case so if you want to use top fans it doesn't look bare and incomplete. I kept the top vents covered so this isn't an issue for me but it could be for some. Anyways, I love this case. I removed the side panel moduvent cover and have a 140mm side fan exhausting the significant amount of hot air produced by my 980 ti amp extreme. I can't emphasize enough how much this helps. Not with the R5. I was concerned cooling wouldn't be as good but it's actually better. I have 2 140mm fans in the front and one in the bottom pushing in with a side fan and rear fan exhausting. It's a perfect setup for people with aftermarket video cards that dump heat into the case and keeps the hot air from recycling into the video card and floating up into the cpu fan. If you can't tell I love the case. Oh yeah and it's quiet. It's not going to be totally silent with loud high performance components but the sound dampening features do make a difference and if you control your fans to idle at a low speed you shouldn't hear much if anything most of the time. This a a great product and something I've been waiting for for years. Thanks fractal!

Lots of room for a mid tower case

I needed a case for my makeshift server. A bench testing and I have to say that this has a lot of space for 8+2/4 2.5-3.5 drives. 2 5.25 bay for optical or additional HDD, hence the +2 or +4 if using 2.5 SSD.Fractal has been making quality cases for some time now and this is a great case. Minimal look, not to flash, gets the job done. It comes with all the fasteners that you will need for this case. The side panel as a bit hard to take off, just a little force needed.

The Define R5 is a welcome reprieve from the sea of flashy 'gamer kid' cases. It's straightforward, elegant, professional, customizable, and very, very easy to work inside of. It really feels like a case designed by someone who said 'I hate working in the modern crop of gaming cases.' Other reviews mention the CPU power cable being unable to fit through the rubber-encircled opening in the upper-back left of the case, but it all fits fine if you simply remove the rubber shield, put the cable through, put the shield around the cable, then fit the shield back into the case. Simple stuff. And maybe it's my motherboard's instructions (MSI Gaming M7), but the case cables were positive along white wires instead of black; opposite of what was listed in the MOBO manual. ... MoreThe Define R5 is a welcome reprieve from the sea of flashy 'gamer kid' cases. Confusing at first but didn't cause any problems. The case also pairs quite well with Noctua fans.

excellent case, probably the best I've ever used

I love this case. It's been very quiet, easy to cool, meets my design aesthetic, tool-less side panel, easy thumb screws everywhere, modular to remove what you don't need for better air flow (at the cost of a little overall rigidity if that's a concern because you transport your case around a lot), plenty of cable routing points, and everything else already mentioned. Actually has legs to keep it up off the floor for airflow (at least if not on carpet - not large enough for that), if you bottom mount the PSU, in addition to the screen filters on both the bottom and front. Only two criticisms. Only two criticisms. The aforementioned top panels (ModuVents) and how easy it is to break the clips that hold them on, in part because it's not clear which side they open from (the rear is opposite the two front, and they overlap) and even if you've looked at the manual and know how they operate, it's best done with the case open from the side to press on the clips instead of just being able to pull them off as needed from the top (say, you only want to pull one for ventilation during gaming, not install a fan there permanently). And while I love the front or rather top panel ports for USB/headphones/mic, I do wish they were behind a flip-up panel or something, both to give a sleeker look to match the rest of the exterior and to protect them from dust - particularly being on the top of the case. I like that they aren't behind the large front panel door, but would be nice if they had their own smaller door. Neither of these two things is enough to ding the rating for me though. Would definitely recommend to anyone as it's highly customizable out of the box.
