I used to wear vans which wore out in 3 months or less, bought some five ten sleuths and they lasted about a year of solid riding once a week for 5-6hours. Bought these to upgrade the worn sleuths, was going to go with the free rider pros, but some people stated they were too stiff. These are much more ridgid / sturdier than the sleuth, soles are thicker and very sticky on the pedals. Still able to feel the pedals, but very supportive. Padded tongues and toes feel more protected. Haven’t used them long enough to see any signs of wear, but I’m sure they will last longer. Half price with sale, couldn’t be beat. Get yourself a pair

Bought a pair of mtb specific shoes as I started riding in some pretty decent skate shoes that didn’t seem to hold up too well. The grip on the shoes of these is outstanding, whole shoe is comfortable and seems to be a lot more durable than just your average shoe (skate shoe in my case)I bought these on sale for $70 AUD, great at that price. when you’re paying more than $100aud for a pair I don’t feel it would be worth it, would rather get a couple of skate shoes to blast through personally. (Reebok, new balance, lakai etc)

I have been suspicious of claims that flat pedal shoes that aren't designated as "Wide" or "EE" would fit my EE foot. For years the only shoes I can wear are Sidi Mega or Lake wide width biking shoes. But when it comes to flat pedal shoes, forget it. After spending hours researching shoes that aren't available I decided to take a chance on Five Ten Freeriders from REI which have been noted by several people as adequate for wide feet. So at a reduced price I ordered a pair last week and upsized 1/2 size from 11 to 11-1/2. Glad to report that these shoes fit very comfortably. My non-biking New Balance shoes I used for flat pedals are heavy, a bit roomier width wise but are clunky and the tread is way more than needed. Plus the return policy is great, unlike Amazon where if a Freerider doesn't fit there was a restocking fee. My suggestion is go for it at REI.

I purchased these shoes to use with my winter beater bike on which I put flat pedals. All my cycling for the past decades has been on clipless pedals (Look, SPD-R, and SPD). I was pleasantly surprised how much they helped over just wearing athletic shoes. Even with the mesh toe box, my feet have stayed comfortable in winter riding (might be a bit warm come summer). At the sale price of $60, they were well worth the purchase.
I have been using this for awhile on single-track with my Novarro Hickory 29er and in town with my Co-op CTY2.1. On either bike the platform sole gives me a great response on the pedal, both in its firmness and the grip of the tread. The shoe is also flexible enough that when I get off the bike I can walk around comfortably enough. Because these look like skate shoes, I can wear them when I bike to my favorite taproom/food truck/pod and not look like a road bike geek. One unexpected plus were the laces. They are short enough so there are no dangles to get caught in the bike chain, but beefy enough it looks like I won’t be needing to replace them any time soon. The shoes are stiff enough that I would not try them on any lengthy walks, but as a bike shoe comfortable ... MoreI have been using this for awhile on single-track with my Novarro Hickory 29er and in town with my Co-op CTY2.1. Got these for mountain biking. On the good side, these shoes do stay on pedals well. However these shoes have some major problems. The laces are the trendy style of flat laces that skateboarders seem to like, however flat laces tend to come untied and these do as well. I have to double tie them to make sure they don't cause a horrible biking accident. The round laces were developed about 25+ years ago to prevent this problem and work great. What's wrong with 5-10 that they don't know this? The shoes are very basic and have no padding in the soles and no support. They are very hard to walk a trail in when you need to dismount for a steep section or trail hazard. I put an arch support in the shoes, but that isnt enough to fix the lack of support in these shoes. They ... MoreGot these for mountain biking. On the good side, these shoes do stay on pedals well. I put an arch support in the shoes, but that isnt enough to fix the lack of support in these shoes. They have lots of padding inside to accommodate every possible foot, but this makes them a sloppy fit and also makes them hot. They are quite heavy for a shoe that has so little support. While the soles are flat, they are not at all firm and twist and turn easily, as others have mentioned. While the sole works great on MTB pedals, it has little traction on any other surface. Not good on floors, cement or anything else. Consider also that you may need to get off your bike to go over a creek or a long, muddy section, as I have had to do many times. These shoes will be a mess afterwards and are hard to clean and dry. Overall, this is an astonishingly bad shoe for one that is so popular with mountain bikers. Forget being cool and look for something else!!!
Great shoes, definitely elevated my skills, paired with DMR Vault pedals riding DH, Enduro, and Freestyle. I did wear a hole through the rubber soles in less than 3 monthes. I was riding these at least 3-4 days a week. They have a plastic shank under the rubber so the feel was still good even with a hole. The rubber on these were softer than my Impacts, and I feel like me Freerider is better rubber as well. The Pro's have better toe protection than the standard freerider. I think I like my freeriders the best overall. Pros 2nd. Impact for extreme DH only.
Purchased in November 2021 and received in December, Red/Mesa in size 10 (normally a size 10 in most shoes). I've only really used it for 1 full wet enduro ride. Having come from tradition mid-height skate shoes, these are fairly close to a mid-shoe. I have fairly flat feet and the shoe fit a little narrow in the arch area but toe box is quite spacious. I'm finding that my feet are punching out the arch area of the shoe. Length is fairly accurate however if not a bit on the longer side.I found the grip to be adequate but not great with Composite Deity Compound flats. I struggled with the grip in the middle of the pedal and feet moved around quite a bit more than expected, however it was slightly better than the average skate shoe. I struggled with the grip in the middle of the pedal and feet moved around quite a bit more than expected, however it was slightly better than the average skate shoe. Pedal feel was low however the shoe is not quite broken in yet. I'm hoping for a little more flex to better feel the pedals.I knew that the Red/Mesa colour wouldn't stay that way for long and within the first ride the inner side of the shoe was made black from crank rub, mostly on the drive side.Looking forward to a few more rides to get a better feel for these shoes and will try a different set of pedals to see if it makes any difference!
I purchased these shoes to be ridden on my mountain bike for some cross country riding and downhill fun. I was immediately impressed with the grip of the soles against my pedals. I would attribute this to the rubber and the tread pattern, which seems a bit odd for general traction to me, but I'm planning on using these to stick to my pedals, so it's a win. The BMX style is my preference over the other options for mountain bike shoes, as I want to look nothing like a roadie when I'm not biking and I like the padded tongue and heel.Sizing: I normally wear between a 9-10 for shoes, depending on brand/model. Solomon XC runners I need a 10 to fit perfectly, where my Puma Suede fit is great with a 9 or 9.5. I chose a size 9 for these shoes because I wanted the tightest ... MoreI purchased these shoes to be ridden on my mountain bike for some cross country riding and downhill fun. Solomon XC runners I need a 10 to fit perfectly, where my Puma Suede fit is great with a 9 or 9.5. I chose a size 9 for these shoes because I wanted the tightest fit possible so my feet weren't moving at all in them. After trying on (in store) I felt no discomfort at all with having my toes fully touching. I wear standard thickness socks typically and do not feel a need to go thinner. The only flaws I can see so far is in materials and finishing. The exterior material could use to be more abrasion resistant, in my opinion. It IS soft, flexible, and breathable, which helps them fit very well, but for long-term durability, this will not hold up as well as full leather. Also, as another reviewer noted, the stitching around the top of the sole penetrates inside the toe box, and you can feel it very well with your fingers inside. I do not have a problem with this, as my toes don't touch this area, but for someone with a different shape of foot this could be a huge disqualifying factor.
The title really says it all, but I switched to these because I was tired of not being able to unclip in time when hitting unexpected trail obstacles going uphill, or chain coming off, or... Nothing better than tipping over, and the great amusement for others you generate while struggling with your bike in the dirt. These shoes provide the security I want on downhills, similar to clipless, and the flexibility to instantly step off the pedal when needed. You obviously lose the upstroke, but I'm just done with clipless on mountain bikes.I wear a size 9.5 - 10, but in 90% of shoes/boots, 9.5. These need to be a 10 for me. They are narrow on my already narrow feet, but I like that for this application.I try to avoid bad weather, usually, but I live in northwestern ... MoreThe title really says it all, but I switched to these because I was tired of not being able to unclip in time when hitting unexpected trail obstacles going uphill, or chain coming off, or... Trails get muddy and getting wet is unavoidable. I haven't tested them in wet conditions, but they don't claim to be waterproof. They seem pretty thick, and shouldn't let in a bunch of water easily, but I would say these are fair-weather shoes. I'll probably wear my waterproof hiking shoes in bad weather, and just hope to not slip off the pedals.Overall, I like these, and they do well what they are advertised to do. They also don't look dorky, so I can wear them from trail to pub.
