20 years of fun and strategy

For the year that it was developed, the graphics were excellent, particularly the background story and art. Compared to your average shoot-em-up-2018, no, the graphics are somewhat pixelated and blurred. But that doesn't stop from playing this awesome strategy game. The game builds strategy, math skills, if you are buying for older children. It has some cartoonish gore, further blurred by the limited resolution of the game. It's a game that can be played many times, many ways. Been playing off/on for 20 years and still enjoyable. Now can introduce to a new generation. I play it on the ancient PS1 so can't speak to compatibility with any other Sony systems.

Could be great!

This particular version is a so so play game. I rated 5 star for playing as it was supposed to. Game controls, graphics, and load times, destroy this port. But it is because of poor crossover to Playstation., from SNES. But it plays like they wanted it to, so????

This is definitely one of the best FF games ever. The sheer scope of the story is amazing! The plot twists are brutal. An extremely fun and challenging game. So many job classes to choose from. Ive recently decided to play it again and try to max every job out. so much replay value.

Excellent value for 2 of the best games ever made!

Currently in the middle of playing this version of Chrono Trigger. It's every bit as good as I remember! The added cut scenes, while unnecessary, are a fun new edition. Once I'm done I'll be moving on to the FF game. Brings me back to my childhood. Can't get much better than these two stories!

Original Final Fantasy Tactics

I ordered this game as a collectible. Although I've played it on PSP and Android, I just wanted to have it. I purchased it will very little resistance and got the collectible at a good price. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened it up to find the item wrapped and protected. Other collectibles I have bought have been damaged en route. On the plastic storage bag there was a little note from the former owner wishing me enjoyment. I do appreciate the little things like that. I can't wait to play it for hours upon hours and relive some great nostalgic moments!

Simply the best turn based strategy RPG
7 October 2012

My friend bought this game when it first hit shelves as a greatest hits edition, and I was new into RPG playing Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, Legend of Dragoon and a couple others. I wasn't into strategy games so when I first looked at it I wasn't too fond on it. I told him my opinion and he said watch me play it through a couple story events and then see what you think. I agreed and it didn't take long for my opinion to change drastically. This game has a good plot, characters, setting(it being the first Ivalice world. If I'm wrong there I do apologize). If you are looking for story, side quests, or just a fun battle system this game has all of that. I won't get into the story too much for spoiler reasons but the game basically is finding the truth to what happened ... MoreMy friend bought this game when it first hit shelves as a greatest hits edition, and I was new into RPG playing Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, Legend of Dragoon and a couple others. I won't get into the story too much for spoiler reasons but the game basically is finding the truth to what happened during the Lion War. A mystery in the history where a young man was erased from, and uncovering the true hero of the war. This is probably in other reviews so as a spoiler I will say Cloud Strife himself is in this game as a secret character and it is very fun taking all the steps to get him. My favorite part of the game besides the story is its job system. Out of all the Final Fantasy games my favorite job system comes from this game. A huge number of jobs with a lot of abilities between them and even a couple secret abilities. Not just RPG fans but classic video gamers in general should give this game a try. You never know, it could become amongst your favorite games as well.

The Classics Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger
11 January 2019

These are two of my favorite games, Ive Spent hours playing these classic games. Final Fantasy 4 is my Favorite, first FF game I beat I think. Compellingnstory of redemption as you start out as the Dark Knight Ceacil, and takes you to the stars, while keeping the crystal mythology of 4 elements. Lets you play every character instead of benching the ones you dont like. Well written, with an ark for your companions. What new Final Fantasy titles lack these days, its, the simplicity and can be beaten in a good length of time, with more simple side quests. I miss turn based like that. Like FF12 was a good balance of turn based and Chronotrigger style of avoiding bad guys. Chrinotrigger. Art beautifully drawn by Akira Toriyama, going back and forward in time, epic ... MoreThese are two of my favorite games, Ive Spent hours playing these classic games. Beautiful construction of games and story telling that I wish was applied to the new games of this genre and SquareEnix overall. Go back to the roots, and make something like this again. I dont want to waste my time like FFXIII and FFXV. They are gorgeous games, hard for me to get Submersed in it and some of the stuff is just super silly with making you do to much and takes so long to complete the story.

The game I never knew I needed
24 July 2019

As a teenager, I tried FF Tactics and I hated it. I was so set on the classic turn-based battles of the FF series that i couldn't get into the grid style that Tactics used. As an adult a million years later, I love it! It's certainly a challenging game that is addictive. I love the job classes you can use, and i love being able to use abilities that I've learned from other job classes. I'm very glad I gave it another chance as an adult, and I'm looking forward to playing the test of the Tactics series, as well as Tactics Ogre in the near future.

Why this game is a must buy for any fan of RPGs.
19 December 2010

First off I will say that this game is a lot different than most Final Fantasy and traditional style role playing games (RPGs), hence the "Tactics" in it's title. This game has a fantastic story, that is has a great amount of depth and seriousness to it. The story revolves around a boy named Ramza in a time of knights and kingdoms. There is a lot political suspense in the game with betrayal and corruption. The main focus however are the mysterious Zodiac Stones, which hold some kind of power, and people seem to do anything to get their hands on them... but in order to leave out spoilers I will stop there. The Battle system is the one feature of this game that makes it one of the funnest and greatest games ever made. The main focus however are the mysterious Zodiac Stones, which hold some kind of power, and people seem to do anything to get their hands on them... but in order to leave out spoilers I will stop there. The Battle system is the one feature of this game that makes it one of the funnest and greatest games ever made. In this game you have a party of 5 members you can put in battle. Unlike tradition RPGs the battles are overhead on bigger maps with your players usually on one starting point and the enemy on the other. Much like chess. You move on a grid, and each character stands on a square, and can move or attack on a range of sqaures. In this game you choose classes for characters in order to gain abilities for them. A class can be anything from a fighter character like: squire, knight, monk, ninja, samurai, etc. or magic characters like: black mage (offensive), white mage (healing), time mage (offensive/support), etc. There are a wide variety of classes to choose from, but you must explore and level up classes to unlock new classes. Once you have gained abilities from one class, you can pick a subclass ability to compliment your main class. This opens up a wide range of combinations since you can change your class anytime for no cost. You can have let's say, a thief who can normally steal from close range, but turn him into an archer and give him a thief subclass and presto! You can now steal from long distance. All in all this game is extremely fun to play, has a great story, and very high replay value. It would be a great game for fans of Final Fantasy games, newcomers to RPGs, or even veteran RPG fans who haven't ever played it. I hope this review was insightful, and I hope that anyone who purchases this game enjoys it as much as I have all these years.

For all of Square's explosive growth over the last few years, Final Fantasy Chronicles proves that the company hasn't forgotten its roots. Like 1999's Final Fantasy Anthology, which saw the release of Final Fantasies V and VI, Chronicles is a repackaging of two of Square's greatest triumphs from the golden 16-bit era--here, Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger make their return. But in the 21st century, when games are as often based on polygons as plot, can a couple of good old 2D epics make a new mark? The answer depends largely on your perspective. But in the 21st century, when games are as often based on polygons as plot, can a couple of good old 2D epics make a new mark? The answer depends largely on your perspective. Informed gamers will know Final Fantasy IV was originally released in the United States in 1991 as a scaled back and poorly translated Final Fantasy II. In addition to realigning the title of the game with subsequent releases, Square has remade Final Fantasy IV into the game it should have been 10 years ago. To begin with, the game's text has been retranslated; gone is the simplistic and sometimes broken English of the Super NES version. The new translation also gives us vastly deeper insight into the characters and plot than we ever got before--Cecil's struggle with the nature of his dark knighthood is much more fully developed, for instance. This translation has thankfully been applied to the original Japanese edition of Final Fantasy IV instead of the dumbed-down "Easy Type" version that was originally released in the States. American gamers finally have a chance to see, in English, all the missing items, battle commands, and other removed features that they missed out on the first time. This is surely the version of FFIV that will endure for years to come.
