Derwent Coloursoft Pencils 36 Tin

I love prismacolors but I am always wondering about the other possibilities so I decided to give these a try. These are nice pencils but they wouldn't be my first choice. But they are nice. I only purchased five colors to test out. I LOVE the Acid Yellow.... it goes down SO nicely and creamy and is a nice addition to my collection. I used it in one of my Posh coloring books and it is dreamy! So happy I picked up that color. I got the Sea Green and it is just as lovely however, it is really the same as the Prisma's Aquamarine. Bought the Ochre and Loganberry and Grey Green. Used them all on that page and I have to say, I am quite happy with these pencils -- the picture turned out great.They dust up a bit... not horribly so but they do; be prepared for that. It is a bigger barrel but not uncomfortable -- and mixed in the cup with my prisma's, it isn't trying to draw all the attention (a pun-?).One side of the prisma's sharpener does work for this pencil and gives it a great point. They go down very close to the same as the prisma in my opinion, aside from the dusting which prisma can do sometimes too, but not as much. The Sea Green and the Prisma Aquamarine feel the same going down. The Sea Green dusted; the prisma didn't. The Derwent may be holding the point a little longer, but not by much. The Prisma might be just a little creamier but not by much (and not at all by much with that Acid Yellow). The pencils are comparable for creaminess.I am deducting one point because of the flecking that is occurring although, it really seems to be happening mostly on the Loganberry. The Acid Yellow doesn't fleck at all but all of the other four colors do -- Loganberry does the most, every time and a lot.I was able to layer all of the colors on top of each other with no problem.I would be very willing to try more colors from this line in hopes of trying to find something different. Overall, I think it is a very nice pencil.

I love Coloursoft pencils. The laydown is smooth, the pigment is vibrant leaving the colored object looking great. There is a little bit of scratchiness when you first begin coloring but that subsides once you get started. The barrel is thicker than some pencils, but I find that aids in the grip of the pencil while coloring, They sharpen well, have the color name and number on the barrel of the pencil. They're great for shaing an have a decent blending capabilities. Also, they play well with other pencils. Bonus, they are also open stock. That allows the individual to purchase a specific color without having to repurchase the whole set for one pencil or the set can be built as needed.

I ordered about 20 open stock pencils. 5 of them had the leads broken. It wasn't just the tips, it was the whole end down past the wood. At first, I figured it was just my bad luck, but I also noted that they were very poorly packaged. Other pencils I have ordered have had the tips protected. These pencils were just in the thin plastic bag and stuck in a padded envelope, which didn't seem very padded, and the tips were at the opening end of the envelope where the padding is thinnest. The ones I got before had something wrapped around the ends. When I sharpened the first one and saw how short it looked compared to the other new ones, I decided to make a call. You don't always know what you're getting into when you order online, and it's nice to know that I can recommend Dick Blick to everyone based on quality, price, and customer service!
