Denon DCD-1600NE Player Silver
Denon is one of the few audio brands that consistently develop hi-fi components and maintain, improve and pass on hi-fi knowledge. With the DCD-1600NE, Denon has set itself no less a goal than to create the ideal model of a disc player: A player with extremely high precision in reading discs, which sends flawless signals to the amplifier. To meet this requirement, Denon has designed the circuits with extremely short signal paths and made them as compact as possible. Denon's engineers have also redesigned the disc drive mechanism brackets and housing to further improve vibration immunity, thus defying the greatest "enemy" of disc players. The data on the disc is now read with unprecedented accuracy. Pure signals are sent to the DCD-1600NE's Advanced AL32 Processing Plus circuitry. In addition to CDs and Super Audio CDs, the DCD can also play recordable CDs and DVDs with PCM up to 192/24 and DSD5.6, thus supporting high-definition audio.

The Denon DCD-1600NE SACD/CD player is made in Japan. It features rock-solid construction, with thick metal on all sides. It weighs 18.1 pounds, more than twice the weight of my old player, the Yamaha CD-S300. The power cord is thick, with 16 AWG conductors, the same size conductors used in the power cord that came with my 100 watt Yamaha amplifier! The DAC is a 32 bit Burr Brown, PCM 1795. The dynamic range is 101 dB for CD and 112 dB for SACD, the signal to noise ratio is 116 dB for CD and 117 dB for SACD and the harmonic distortion is .0018% for CD and .001% for SACD. When using the analog outs, the DSD layer of SACDs is decoded directly, without converting to PCM. This has been confirmed by Denon Support via email. The DCD-1600NE reads CDs and SACDs quickly and responds immediately to entries from the remote or the front panel. The display is easy to read, even from 10 feet across the room. It features Pure Direct, which shuts off the display and the digital outs to improve sound quality. Repeat functions and display options can be accessed via the remote, which is bigger than it needs to be. Still, the remote is of robust construction, just like the rest of this player, which is clearly built to last.So far, it's read every CD, CD-R and SACD I played without a single error. You might think that this would be a given, but sadly it isn't these days. Last year on two separate occasions I bought a Marantz SACD player, the SA8005, and they were both defective when they arrived. My four tries with the CD-S700 CD player by Yamaha were all in vain, as each one had intermittent trouble reading CDs. While playing, one unit even made a loud noise that I could hear from across the room. Yeah, they don't make 'em like they used to. That is a huge reason why this Denon is a keeper. The other big reason is it's dynamic, revealing sound. Although when I first plugged it in the sound quality on it was a bit thin, brittle and bright, over time it has smoothed out nicely. I recommend giving the CD and SACD functions each 200 hours of play (simply run a disc in each format on repeat, no need to have the sound on) before making any final decisions about the sound, for it truly needs this amount of time to burn in and sound its best. As I had found when I tried out this player out once before, it has a powerful, authoritative sound. Clarity and soundstaging is better than my old player as well. And much to my surprise, it plays CDs and SACDs equally well. It does not seem to be like many SACD players, where you get subpar CD playback.I highly recommend this SACD player.

Very well built player that sounds amazing with regular CDs and SACDs. Great separation, detail, clarity, rhythmic drive (the bass response is a huge step up over my previous Onkyo player, no slouch itself). The front buttons are a bit leisurely when pressed, but everything works smoothly and the disc tray itself is nicely stabilized (this is in stark contrast to the unbelievably flimsy disc tray on the Arcam CDS50, which was also buggy as all get out). I am pairing with a Marantz Rube integrated amp, Audioquest Colorado cables, Morrow Audio power cord, and Klipsch Heresy IV speakers connected with Transparent cables. The mix is sonic bliss!

I have had the unit about a month, about 40 hours of "burnedin", it now sounds excellent on both Super Audio and Red Book CD, really enjoyits sound clarity, transparent, dynamic range, and soundstage.
I’ve had it for two weeks. About 20 hours of play, so it’s somewhat “burned in.”It replaced a Cambridge Audio unit, well regarded when I bought it five years ago. With three filter settings, you can “dial in” your preferred sound. Even with the best of the three, the sound was somewhat flat and “thuddy” to my ears. The longer I owned it, the less I liked it.The Denon costs twice the price of the Cambridge. Not cheap, but not ridiculous. It has a full, rich sound, with a sweet treble. While listening to the Cambridge quickly got fatiguing, I enjoy the Denon. Easy on the ears, clear and detailed. Overall, a very nice, true balance. And you don’t have to fool around with filters. BTW, I’m playing regular CDs, not SACDs.In fact, it sounds so good that Im not using my turntable as much as I used to. This Denon unit is that good.Solid, heavy build. Smooth transport. Clean, uncluttered design. Likely my last cd player, a keeper.I recommend it. Worth the money.
Solid performer. Remote is surprisingly cheap feeling and has no drawer open/close. Not a deal breaker but odd
This was an upgrade from a $300 CD player and it’s a night and day difference. Best digital sound I’ve experienced- at least in the ballpark if my twice as costly analog rig.
And can say that mid and high bands are much more detailed. On 1600NE i cannot heat that much difference between CD and SACD! That obsoletes my SACD collection but gives me a confidence i dont need to by SACD DSD in nesr future. Thanks to phenomenal Denon again. I just love it.
My last CD player left a little something to be desired; I knew it was time for a new CD player. I have been a big fan of Denon audio for years and I am glad they are still releasing high quality CD players at a reasonable price (at least for Hifi fans). I find this CD player to be at a price point that I am comfortable with in this ever changing digital world. Needless to say, I am not disappointed with the sound and build quality of the unit. It is gorgeous looking; quite big too, so make for a beautiful display piece on the rack. The transport is very quiet and seems very well made. Also, Audio Advice has very fast shipping with excellent service!
spectacular sound! no problem playing/tracking SA-CDs. However, placing a CD in the disc tray could be easier - inserting a disc in the tray requires minor adjustments to seat the disc properly. A nit maybe but it's the only CD player I've owned where you can't easily put the CD in the tray!
