As we walked up the trail, it became apparent that I would indeed need to take advantage of the shorts feature. Just before Walter’s Wiggles (the part of the trail with steep switchbacks), I decided to make the change. This brings up my only complaint about these pants- switching between modes. I sat down on the trail expecting to easily slip the bottoms over my shoes, but that was not possible. I sat there for a couple minutes with many people watching (many were complimenting my wise decision and were probably quite jealous), with one person even calling me “very European.” After a few minutes of struggle removing the calf covers, I finally got to shorts mode, which I must say is much more stylish than the pants mode. Walter’s Wiggles were a breeze in shorts mode and we finally reached the chained portion of the hike. There came a point where I did not wish to continue as I had just slipped on the ice. While the rest of my group continued to the top, I sat and waited in what proved to be a popular stopping point for people in the same situation as me. I discussed future plans with a fellow college student and even learned quite a bit of family medical history from another man who had recently recovered from a heart attack. During that time I also ate a string cheese, which I later found out my brother had specifically packed for himself. The rest of the hike included a re-zip and another un-zip of the calf covers, but I learned my lesson and took my shoes all the way off this time, making it much more efficient. It also included a surprising amount of snow and a painful descent down Walter’s Wiggles. Overall, it was a great day and these pants were crucial to my comfort throughout the hike. I can’t wait to wear them for my next hike!

I bought these about a month ago and have worn them hiking 3 times. They look and feel great...very breathable. I gave the pants 3 stars because the wallet pocket in the back already has a small hole! I was disappointed because I barely have worn them...and I don't really keep my wallet in that pocket when I am hiking for fear it will fall out. It appears that the sewing or thread came undone. I am looking at a sturdier pair in the future. Maybe 5.11 tactical ridge pants. I still will wear these as my alternate pair. Not worth the Hassel to return at this point.

I really wanted to like these pants. I had purchased a used pair and very quickly the stitching on the back pockets fell apart. Not knowing how the previous owner had treated them I purchased a new pair figuring they had been improved or my used pair had been abuse. The stitching on the new pair hasn't lasted a year and I have rarely worn them. Having things (like your wallet) fall out of the pockets is unacceptable. Also the hook and loop closures on the pockets is insufficient, worthless. I like the fabric but that's about it.

These pants are great. Rugged, versatile (can be used as shorts), and good in the Pacific Northwest wet (they get wet but dry quickly). The cargo pockets allow me to carry my wallet in a way it won't hurt my back when driving or on a plane; couple this with their versatility and they are great "traveling pants".Beware of the non-cargo pockets!! They are made of a webbing that is not very durable. I have lost car keys, and a hotel key on separate occasions due to the pockets developing holes.3 suggestions for Columbia: 1) use a stronger material for the pockets. 2) have a lanyard with a key latch in a place where you could slip a key into a pocket, like on your Whirlibird IV jackets. 3) have more elastic material on the waist to accommodate a wider range of fits.
These are the worst pants I've ever owned. I bought two pair expecting them to be durable but since owning them the seams always seem to tear on all of the pockets. The back pockets developed holes in them pretty quickly, the side pocket on the right leg completely tore side ways, and in the left waist pocket there is another hole. I've been sewing them back together but they keep tearing. They look nice and are probably nice to wear around town but I wouldn't recommend going hiking or doing any work in them. 05/27/2023

Unfortunately it has been over a year so they are out of warranty. In reality though they haven’t been through rough wear and have only been washed at most 10 times. I actually have an older pair that has been through many more wash cycles and been worn many more times and the stitching is fine in that pair. With both pockets having the same problem, I consider it a manufacturing defect but since they are 2 months out of warranty, Columbia says there is nothing they can do. They recommended I take them to a local seamstress. All have the same problem: the back pockets are formed by stitching a patch of mesh material to the inside of the fabric seat of the pants. The stitching unravels and the mesh separates from the seat of the pants, creating big holes in the pockets. Almost lost my wallet, but luckily felt it sliding down the inside of the trouser leg. Upon examining the other two pants, they too have this condition on both the left and right back pockets (I never even use the back left pocket). Additionally, the belt loops are not optimized. There are only 3 widely-spaced belt loops in the back, which results in the waistband of the pants pulling below the belt when bending over. The pants were so tight in the thighs and hip that I could not put them on. So I returned the 34-waist pants to the retailer and after experimenting with larger waist sizes in the fitting room I found that a 40-inch waist size is needed to provide a comfortable fit in the thighs and hip. So I bought the pants with 40-inch waist size. However, the resulting loose waistband requires a lot of cinching in with the belt, which worsens the effect of the poor belt loop design. Very disappointing, after paying premium price for these three pants, and I probably haven't worn any of them more than a dozen times for casual-duty use. The retailer won't take them back due to the purchase being more than a year ago. Looking at customer reviews on the retailer's website, the pocket and fit problems appear to be frequent and long-standing issues. My fault for not doing more research in advance, as I relied on my years of overall satisfaction with Columbia outer wear. These Silver Ridge pants fall far short of expectations.
