Compact, tack sharp 28mm prime lens & Macro capability makes this lens an exceptional value for your variety of M camera. The addition of a variable built in ring light is the icing on the cake. Besides being tiny and light and sharp, It's just plain fun to walk around exploring different macro targets without a cumbersome speedlite and difuser weighing you down. No buyer remorse on this lens-trust me.

I am new to mirrorless cameras. I absolutely love my DSLR and it is still my main go-to camera for everything. But I am planning a backpacking trip and with the weight of the camera and its lenses, it is just too heavy to carry. So I decided to go with a lightweight mirrorless system. I still needed a macro lens to replace what I was going to take with me (Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro). So this EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro lens was my only option.I honestly was not expecting much, coming from my 100mm Macro. But this lens is really impressive, for its size, weight and price! It is surprisingly sharp. Fast autofocus. Quiet for shooting video. At f/3.5, its not very good in low light. About an inch or so away from your subject. So Im really curious how this will work when shooting bugs during my hike. I think this will be just fine for what I need.

The built in light is an awesome feature. The image quality is crisp and clear. The bokeh is beautiful and soft. The biggest challenge I have is getting my subject in focus. At a low aperture and close up you won't be able to get a whole strawberry in focus and that's not even using the super macro feature. The super macro feature does require you to be *ridiculously* close. I wouldn't even bother using the feature without a lens protector. Which brings me to the worst feature of the lens - you can't use a protector without using the hood. Overall, it's a great lens that I've been able to take beautiful pictures with. I feel I received good value for my money.

I like the lens. It has neat features like the built in flash, super macro, image stabilizer and twist to extend design for compact carry. Images quality is good and macro lenses are fun. It had very good used price for what you get. Macro lenses tend to be expensive, but this lens was relatively cheap. Now, my complaints about the lens. I wish the lens had metal mount like the 22mm f2 instead of plastic mount like the kit lens. Makes other wise good lens feel cheap. I also wish the lens had max aperture of at least f/2.8. f/3.5 is perfectly fine for macro since you would actually need to stop down more to get more in focus, but 28mm range is a very versatile range to be used in normal shooting but 3.5 is too slow for fixed prime lens. At that point mind as well use a zoom. F/2 (would have loved it and wouldn't mind paying more for it) would have been perfect and f/2.8 would have been good. It would have stayed on my camera lot more and it would have made this lens very popular.
I purchased this lens as aa alternative to shooting detail shots of rings during wedding photography. Typically I use the 5DIII with the 100mm f/2.8 L. Why the down-grade: 1) I want to shoot Macro shots with a wider perspective. The EF-M 28mm on the M3 has the equivalent angle of view as a 45mm lens on a full frame. 2) Time & hassle of changing lenses and settings on my 5DIII. I'd rather just grab a camera that's ready to take Macro shots. Important note: the weight of the M3 + EF-M 28 (500g) is lighter than carrying the 100mm f/2.8 lens (625g) in my gear bag. Although, I carry both still. 3) Having LED lights built into the lens front is a great feature, either as the main light or as fill. 4) DOF and aperture: with a crop sensor, the DOF doesn't get so shallow. ... Circle of confusion stuff. Basically, at the same focal distance (lens), aperture, and sensor to subject distance: a crop sensor will have a greater DOF. For me this is a plus. Using the 100mm f/2.8 I need to shoot at f/8.0 or greater to get a usable DOF. This is dark. Indoors, I must tax ISO to get a decent shutter speed to shoot hand held. With the M3 + the EF-M 28mm I can get a similar DOF at f/3.5 (a huge light advantage). Furthermore, because this is a 28mm vs 100mm the desired increase in DOF is also the result of focal distance. CONCLUSION: I'm still testing the system. I'll be honest, the image quality is alright - but nothing compared to the 100mm f/2.8 L on the 5DIII. For detail shots of jewelry and such during weddings, these images will never be ordered as large prints. As an image in a wedding album this system should be just great. The advantage is being able to move faster and get the macro shots while still having my other cameras ready to capture the events and people sharing moments in the other room.
I find that the built-in LED ring light is a great feature. You don’t need to spend extra money on a separate lighting unit for those closeup shots. You can select from two brightness levels or just turn it off. With the lens set to “Super Macro” you can fill the frame with a 1/2” object. The only thing that I would change is the length of the 28 mm lens (48mm equivalent focal length) so you don’t wind up almost touching the object with the front of the lens at the closest setting. If they had increased the equivalent length to about 55-60mm, it would not increase the size very much but would give you a little more distance from the front of the lens.Other than the focal length, I love this little jewel of a lens.
I finally got a chance to go out and try out my new EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM last Friday. I have never used such a short focal length macro, I'm used to my 105mm so this took some getting used to. I found this lens to be very sharp and making close-up photography much easier than with a more traditional focal length. with the image stabilization, I was able to get nice macro shots handheld. I have found this lens to be an excellent walk-around lens. It very sharp and is a great focal length for general photography. I have seen lots of reviewers give this lens a bad rap for having a maximum f-stop of F3 .5 instead of 2.8. I would have to say that if you're shooting macro, you should be shooting at least 5.6 or higher to get enough depth of field for most subjects ... This is one of the most bizarre-looking lenses I have seen, The built-in LED lights are pretty useless in daylight but work well in subdued light such as indoors or early evening. If it's dark enough for these lights to work, you will probably need a tripod.
I am using it for about a month on my EOS M3 and EOS M. My other macro was Tokina m35. It focuses extremely close, very good clarity and as sharp as the 22mm pancake for ef-m. I use it as a versatile all purpose lens for it's somewhat wide focal length. The ring light makes it an amazingly unique creative lens. Only other lens that remotely matches this lens with the concept of ring light is theYasuhara Nanoha. However, that one has a 5:1 macro ratio similar to Canon MP-E 65mm. As far as a built quality goes, it's built for the price in terms of it's ruggedness. It's built light so that it does not become front heavy and great for pov on very light tripods or the minipods or snappods. I have used it on a snappod (magnus) and got great results. Despite the light design I am surprised as Canon did put in the effort with the glasses. It has one UD (Ultra low dispersion) element similar to the L series macro lens. None of the other Canon macro lenes have that except for the L or the luxury ones. Which surprised me. With that being said I would recommend this lens as an essential to augment your EOS EF-M lens lineup. Happy shooting!
I have been shooting with the 28mm f/3.5 Macro for a couple weeks now. Quite happy with the lens, it is an impressive bit of optics. The images are very, very sharp, using the entire resolution of the EOS M5 to best effect. The lens is a specialized bit of kit, truly for macrophotography and maybe a bit of short range general photography. It has some odd features that seem a bit unusual at first. The ring light of course, quite useful when photographing targets a few inches in front of the lens. Not really a ring, the light is two 90 degree segments to the left and right of the lens aperture. You turn on the light with a button on the side of the lens. The lens must be extended before use by means of releasing a latch on the side of the barrel and then rotating the barrel into position. There are three positions for this extension, retracted, macro, and super macro. The lens is not threaded for standard filters in the usual manner due to the barrel extension. There is an adapter supplied with the lens that fits standard 43mm filters (the same as a number of EF-M lenses). This adapter blocks the ring light, no real issue as using the ring light with a filter would likely result in reflections.
I have the L series 100mm macro, and that lens is impossible to beat. It's also heavy like a rock, and huge. Can you get very worthwhile results from a lens too small to be in that L class? In this case, yes. This lens gets you into that world where small stuff is like mountains--behaves like big stuff. For all those occasions where you want to explore with a rig that weighs less than a pound, this does it.
