Cambridge Audio DacMagic 100 Black
Thanks to a Wolfson 24-bit DAC, a 24-bit/96kHz driverless USB Audio 1.0 input and S/PDIF and TosLink digital inputs, the DacMagic 100 takes the sound from your computer, iPod, TV and other digital devices and adds detail, depth and added clarity to give you a true audio experience. Pure Process Generally the digital to analogue converter found in typical digital devices is pretty poor and won’t extract the truest quality of audio from your sources. The DacMagic 100 works by taking a direct digital audio signal from your device to bypass its soundcard or DAC. It then digitally processes the audio signal using our custom designed technology, dramatically improving sound quality and reducing distortion. This results in greater detail, sparkling clarity and a deeper scale to all of your audio. Compatibility DacMagic 100 is very flexible and supports virtually all digital file formats including the very highest quality 24-bit studio master or lossless quality audio files stored on your computer. With three different digital connectivity options and the ability to connect four devices concurrently, DacMagic 100 is a true digital music enhancement hub. Set-up is totally intuitive, allowing you to begin enjoying better quality audio in minutes. Sound First Design Like all our products, the DacMagic 100 was custom developed from the ground-up by our design team at our headquarters in the heart of London. Our engineering teams put an incredible amount of attention to detail on ensuring the sound quality is the focus of the product, for the DacMagic 100 this included incorporating the very latest digital to analogue converter from market-leader Wolfson.

Received an item that looked new but not in a retail box. Superior option to an internal sound card. Streaming TIDAL, the DAC is connected to a Pioneer D608 receiver with Sonus Faber Concertino speakers. I really like the subdued blue LED lights that are not in-your-face. The sound is incredible with both TIDAL and my 300 FLAC recordings. Highly recommended. After using the Cambridge Dac Magic 100 for over two weeks I am so happy I did not buy the SoundBlaster card. The WIN 10 drivers were easy to install and TIDAL has additional settings for it as well. I put the Sound shortcut on the desktop so I can bypass and use the onboard sound if needed.

The fantastic Richer Sounds team helped me buy a great system system about four years ago, when a purchased a Yamaha AS301 amplifier, Dali Zensor 3 speakers and a Cambridge Audio CXC CD transport. The sound has always been really good, but decided it was time to upgrade. After researching the Cambridge Audio amplifier range, I started reading about DACs and at just over £100 decided the DAC Magic gave me a piece of the Cambridge kit with solid reviews on the sound.I’m pleased to say that this little box has transformed my system. All I was after was a good sound stage and instrument separation, but I’m hearing things I have not heard in music that has been played over and over again for years. In all honesty, my research led me towards the Schiit Modi 3, but these are difficult to find in the UK.If you are looking for your first DAC or are thinking about giving your sound system a boost, this is a great place to start. You won’t be disappointed!A word of caution: I got bogged down in the complex discussions about sound quality while researching DACs - all I’ll say about that is the production quality of the music plays a major role in hearing any difference. I personally find some Tidal Hifi tracks sound better or the same as Masters, but there are some Masters tracks that sound exceptional. My advice - get a good setup and trust your ears with the music that you love. The DAC Magic really lets me enjoy my music in all formats.

I bought this to act as a DAC for my laptop. Setup for Windows 10 is a little fiddly with Audio 2.0 driver and messing about with settings to get ASIO output. However! The benefits are real. The sound is amazing. I am playing FLAC files through the DACMagic into my Denon amp with Mission speakers. I'm not an audiophile, but the sound is definitely better than even CD quality. Don't be put off by it's diminutive size. This little pocket rocket is the business. My only (very petty) gripe is that the supplied USB cable is quite short (about 40cm). But longer versions are readily available..Well done CA for another great product. And thanks again Richer sounds for speedy service and great value. I couldn't find this DAC cheaper anywhere else. Even second hand ones ... MoreI bought this to act as a DAC for my laptop. Setup for Windows 10 is a little fiddly with Audio 2.0 driver and messing about with settings to get ASIO output. However! Don’t post much, but having bought and listened to this little box of tricks, I felt I had to. Mine is a modest system , but to my ears a good listen. It was purchased more out of curiosity than anything, but it’s blown me away. The difference is not drastic in any way, however, it’s like a thin veil has been lifted, instrument separation and clarity has improved, it’s easier to follow bass lines and background effects seem more noticeable. Anyone else curious, give it a go, for £149 you can’t go wrong…..
I have just purchased this as a Christmas present from children so have only set it up to verify everything works ok then had to pack it away until then. However even in that short time the sound is excellent. A warm and beautifully clear sound now from my tv through the DAC100 via my Sugden HiFi.Exceedingly easy to set up too.The delivery was also excellent with the item well packed to avoid transit damage. And with £50.00 off very good value.
I came to this product after an unfortunate experience buying the same companies' CXUHD dvd/cd player, discovering when I came to hook it up to my system that there were no line-level analogue outputs. As a temporary measure I used a spare digital coax input to an elderly CD recorder, monitoring the input through to my Audiolab pre-amp.To their credit(?) neither Richer nor Cambridge Audio suggested that the DACMagic was a better solution to this problem caused by my oversight, but I got there eventually under my own steam! My initial concern about acquiring a separate DAC unit was that it had to work with my analogue-only Audiolab pre-amp because of my ongoing need to support analogue inputs, so I did not require duplication of volume control, headphone output and high quality Class A drive for my Quad amps. This where the 100 scores over its more expensive sibling.I'm pleased to be able to report that the DACmagic 100 was an outstanding success, producing some of the best quality sound reproduction I've achieved with my system - especially noticeable with 'live' recordings from concert halls, opera houses etc. At the other end of the scale it made more tolerable some of the less than perfect recordings retained from an earlier age! This effect was achieved not only with disk or local area network playback from the CXUHD, but also from my satellite TV recorders which could also be accommodated with the spare coax and optical inputs on the DACmagic 100. I've read hundreds of hi-fi reviews in the past and scoffed many times at some of the hyperbole employed, but I find myself saying that with the DACmagic 100 the music reproduction is more involving, drawing you into the performance rather than leaving you as a casual bystander.Good job!
Functionally, this unit works fine.Distortion and dynamic range seem crystal clear. But, unfortunately, there is a very high residual clock-subharmonic / AC-line noise leakinginto the audio. This noise appears no better than 50dB down from peak output. My NAD preamp is dead-silent compared to this DAC when the DACis powered on, but with no USB signal connected ( or connected and quiescent ).White Noise performance seems okay, but is not up to the NAD SNR performance. The unit seems sensitive to power supply noise levels, and the accompanying switching power supply is not clean.Replacing this supply with a clean linear supply helped. Thus, overall, I am saying that the 113dBr SNR specification is misleading.I understand the pressures of keeping unit ... MoreFunctionally, this unit works fine.Distortion and dynamic range seem crystal clear. But, unfortunately, there is a very high residual clock-subharmonic / AC-line noise leakinginto the audio. This little magic box is a joy to own! I bought this for my computer-based audio system. After 2 decades I'm moving away from internal sound cards. This is replacing an ASUS Xonar Essence, so there were huge shoes to fill. I'm happy to say the shoes were filled, and then some. The sound from this DAC is wonderful and clear. I do agree with some reviews that the bass is a little bit thinner than on other DACs I've heard, but it's not a huge difference and I can Eq to compensate. Have I heard better? Yes but only marginally. DAC is a mature technology, so any good implementation should make most owners happy. You've got to be quite determined to squeeze out that last 5 percentile, which gets real expensive real quick. My hat is off to Cambridge for putting thought ... MoreThis little magic box is a joy to own! I bought this for my computer-based audio system. You've got to be quite determined to squeeze out that last 5 percentile, which gets real expensive real quick. My hat is off to Cambridge for putting thought into the user experience. It has a relay that delays sound output so there's no POP turning on or turning off. This is huge because my speakers' amplifier is directly connected. I've had more expensive DAC's that don't. The DacMagic also remembers the last input. Again, I've had more expensive DACs that don't. Every time I try to replace this little box I wind up appreciating it more. Even when/if I get another mainstay, I will keep the 100 as a backup. My quest will continue to find a better sounding DAC that checks off all the same user-experience boxes that the baby DacMagic executes so well. I'm worried I might be searching a while.
I first bought a DACMagic 100 for a small video equipment and was fully satisfied.Being a musician and a professional in audio electronics maintenance, I replaced my old audio system with a new one consisting in a Cirus One - D class amp - and a paire of Dali Opticon 8 speakers. These two devices match perfectly well, reaching quite a perfection in sound reproduction. As I dematerialized my CD's into flac files, stored in a PC implementing Foobar2000 software, I bought a second DacMagic 100 : the overall result was absolutely exceptionnal. My clients, who are audiophiles, visiting my audio lab are surprised by the quality of the system.I bought two more units for my son and my daughter, with the same satisfaction level. This product offers a good performance/price ... MoreI first bought a DACMagic 100 for a small video equipment and was fully satisfied.Being a musician and a professional in audio electronics maintenance, I replaced my old audio system with a new one consisting in a Cirus One - D class amp - and a paire of Dali Opticon 8 speakers. Maybe I was expecting too much from this DAC. Perhaps also my set-up just does not get the significant benefit so many others have experienced. I certainly can't say that it has transformed my listening experience.I attached it via usb to my Dell XPS 8500 and connected to a Cyrus Smartpower through a Tisbury passive preamp having configured the Dac for usb audio 2 and using ASIO mode. Speakers are AE Compact. I played a number of familiar tracks (all Flac, 16 or 20 bit and 44.1 kHz) and compared with the Dell MaxxAudio4 output (set to 'music' but no other enhancement). I could switch from DacMagic dac to Cyrus dac during a playing track and this revealed no evident difference, both sounded equally convincing and very easy to listen to.So really the DacMagic has provided some extra input options but not a lot in terms of sound difference (or tangible improvement). This only means it has not impressed under the above conditions and should not put others off giving it a try. While I might be underwhelmed by the results I know from other reviews both here at RS and further afield that this is seen as a cracking little dac for the money. Certainly the build quality is superb and the set up really easy, supported by one of the best hifi web support sites at Cambridge Audio.
