Amp cam be clean or crunchy. Light or loud. Pleasing tone that can be useful for many different styles of music. This is from the parent of a non-audiophile, non-musician parent of teenage musician and audiophile.

Brilliant amp head. Can't believe it sounds clearer than my Mesa Boogie mini rectifier.Highly recommend it.

I wanted to like this amp sooooo bad. Couldn't buy it. The gain does come close to creating a good distortion. The cleans are ok but not special. I played it at my local GC. Walked away from it. Even the GC reps were shocked at what little it gave at the price asked. You better buy pedals to support it. 'Maybe' that might work. To many other options for the same if not less money.

Great for gigging. Lots of headroom and great tone, but super lightweight to make it easy to transport.
I'm an oldfart, played a long time for fun and in bands. Back in the day I was into clean platform + pedals approach so I had a variety of Fender and modded Fender tube amps. As tech developed I looked for a combo amp you could take to rehearsal or gig without needing pedals. I started trying tube and ss Blackstar amps. They were good but there was always something I wasn't a fan of in either or both the clean and gain channels, so back to Fender/modded Fender. The St. James got my attention because it seemed almost too good to be true - great clean and gain and unheard of low weight. The St. James DELIVERS. The clean isn't exactly Fender but it does both huge and chimey, sounds great with both single coils and humbuckers, on all power settings. Plenty of headroom, ... The clean isn't exactly Fender but it does both huge and chimey, sounds great with both single coils and humbuckers, on all power settings. Plenty of headroom, and takes pedals very graciously in front and in FX loop. The gain channel/s are definitely Blackstar, but more open and less honky than other models. Really rewarding, touch sensitive. And yes, it is LIGHT, no lie. Blackstar had to push the engineering envelope to achieve this and I applaud them bigtime! Too soon to see how it ages, if it's reliable, but if you want your cake(s) and eat 'em too, this is about as good as it gets.
Played the el34 version. Quite a bit of gain, but the Overdrive sound was really poor. The HT20 sounds better.
Traded my heavy blues deluxe amp for this. Super lightweight, headphone capable, uses same tubes as my old amp, had some spares on hand before the tube shortage. Got the matching cab too with the 2 special celestions, the 2w,sag,50w switch is nice too. Blackstar got it right!
Very happy with the sound of the amp. I've not had chance to really open it up yet to ear bleeding levels but I'm confident that it will deliver for me.The big selling point for me was the weight of the combo. Because I'm over the age of 21 and have arthritis, I was struggling with the conventional combos weighing 30 too 40 KGs. This amp is about 11KGs and is so easy to lift, carry and transport.Well done Blackstar and you get an extra star for the name. "Saint James".
The sound from this amp is incredible. The tones are amazing on the clean. And coupled with a nice pedal board the crunch is absolutely punishing.
Is blackstar amp is absolutely fantastic. It sounds great: the clean channel is good and has headroom but the dirty channel is absolutely brilliant and goes from UK rock to American gain with plenty of saturation on voice 2. And it writes the line out is brilliant for playing through the computer and using headphones and when I take it gigging having a cabinet along with the PA is going to sound utterly massive. My only gripe with it would be that now I would really like the EL34 version as well.
