It's a rather underwhelming experience for the price. With an overpowered cpu for its gpu there seems to be a lot to desire. When the gpu is constantly and easily hitting 99 to 100% usage the cpu is barely braking a sweat. For the battery life it's quite lackluster claiming 4hrs but in reality making around 2 if you don't tune the snuff out of the cpu and gpu. The only reason I bought was becwuse of the current chip shortage and collage being on the horizon for me and wanting a rig this was the only thing I found at msrp. But I don't really recommend it. If they where to upgrade the gpu to a model wth 6gb of vram and downgrade to a 4core cpu im sure this would be a much solid experience. As for multitasking it's amazing given the 6 core I7 that turbos up to 5ghz (according to specs) but I only measured a max of 4.6ghz on single core benchmarks multicore it hovers around 4.38 to 58 for short burst. Ram is more than enough wth 16gb of it and storage if alright giving you 515gb enough for 2 or 3 modern titles. It would also be nice if the battery was bigger, would not mind the extra weight. Finally the display trading of a couple hertz for a brighter one would be cool as well. Like instead of 144 and 300 nits(I think thats it) 120 HZ or 90 HZ at 400 nits would be superb. Oh and usb pd support would be a nice to have considering it has a usb c port.

Asus' choice to use liquid metal cooling was a fantastic one, I do sometimes hit CPU temps exceeding 95C-100C (still within operable parameters, for brief spikes) however that's during very extreme use situations and when ive had the cpu working very hard. That said the GPU has remained very cool and stable, even when overclocking (the turbo setting will already overclock and is more than enough if you dont want to push it any further. All in all I am very satisfied with my new Strix and will be purchasing more ASUS ROG line products going forward ! Note: If I could change one thing or if I could make one request of the awesome engineers at ASUS in regard to this particular model, it would be only for a better quality internal display panel, the one that is currently used (Panda LM156LF-2F01) Just doesn't do justice to the capabilities of the 2070 RTX, while the 144hz Refresh rate is nice but is somewhat mitigated by the slow black-white response times and shallower color reproduction, That said it's still quality in terms of what typical end-user will notice. I am personally using an external gaming monitor as my main display. I also upgraded the NVME SSD with a second 1 TB WD Black NVME SSD and the transfer rates are fantastic with this chipset. In short, if you're on the fence and you are looking for a great gaming rig that is VR capable and don't want to break the bank or deal with disappointing sub par performance, then look no further! You wont be sorry :)

Thank you for these devices. The device is great in most respects, the performance is very good, the screen is acceptable, but there are better ones, the sound of the cooling fans is somewhat acceptable, the lighting bar at the bottom of the device is very cool, and I think it is more beautiful than the newer versions, which are shorter. The device is very good as a whole, except for two things. The first is the temperature, as the processor temperature ranges between 80 and 95, which is considered a high temperature. The second is the battery, as the 45w battery is small on a device with these specifications, as the device works for about two hours only in silent mode and by running the energy saver while using programs that do not require high performance, which ...Ā MoreThank you for these devices. The device is great in most respects, the performance is very good, the screen is acceptable, but there are better ones, the sound of the cooling fans is somewhat acceptable, the lighting bar at the bottom of the device is very cool, and I think it is more beautiful than the newer versions, which are shorter. Something like this will open new horizons for the world of laptops. When the next batch comes out, send one for me to try šŸ˜‰šŸ˜‰.I hope that the response will be useful.thank you.

Bang for the Buck that's for sure!

As the title says it's serious bang for the buck but it does have some engineering oversights and drivers need to mature. The cooling for this needs to be improved first and foremost, it needs a thicker/ bigger heatsink and needs to do a push pull cooling system to help cool the ram and NVME SSD's. ( shameless suggestion plug here for Asus, you could make a cooling upgrade with a taller base as a optional purchase. We all have to have it on a cooling base anyhow. )This system is very stringent on RAM because you cannot enable XMP/ DOCP timings as of right now. You are stuck with CL22 3200 ram, and cas latency lower with either down clock or flat out blue screen the system.Which brings me to the driver side of things, it's heavily dependent on ASUS to create the drivers for this system as well as Armory Crate to optimize the performance. AMD, Realtek only provide the reference driver, which currently can cause a conflict if you try and use AMD's control panel instead of Asus's Armory Crate ( the source of the random restart bug ) Asus you really need to work with AMD on this and try to implement many of the features that desktop counterpart has like ram timings, fully control your GPU's graphics configuration and features so on and so fourth. That aside, the system is well built, easy to take apart for upgrading which is very recommended, the ram it comes with is serviceable but you can get more out of this machine with faster ram timings. The screen is nice, close to IPS quality which makes it great for gaming but for color accurate tasks it is a bit off. The performance for what this thing costs is very respectable, I replaced my old Ryzen 7 1700x / GTX 1070ti build with this machine and it handles what I throw at it better than what my desktop did at 4k.I am honestly happy with this machine and know as time goes on the drivers will mature and it will become even better.

First gaming laptop and now a devoted ROG fan

This is the first gaming laptop Ive purchased so far. It took me a long while to decide if I should get it or not, especially since I was also interested in building a PC. A friend of mine motivated me to get the laptop for portability purposes, since I'd be able to transport it for other purposes. One thing I can say, I don't regret getting it because the laptop has definitely given me joy and many hours of playtime! (I rarely used a PC to game, but I'm on the laptop 24/7 since it arrived.) I would say that the laptop reach expectations for many new games. Has a wonderful RGB view, which is very eye catching. I even bought the Balteus and Chakram mouse to complete my set! The graphic card (Nvidia Geforce 2070) will give it many more years of life to meet requirements for games. The fan is very powerful, but the integrated program of ROG crate armory can help you modify the speed and performance -- there is a hotkey on the keyboard for the rog crate armoury. One thing the laptop is lacking is the numpad on the mousepad like many of the other models have. The g17 has a numpad section, but this one is lacking it. One of the things I dislike is the distance the keyboard placement is set. This is mainly because I tend to type with my wrist resting, rather than my hands hovering over the keyboard. It may not be a problem for you if you tend to type with your hands hovering over the keyboard and not like me, where I rest my wrist. Also the speakers aren't quite something I enjoyed, but I mostly use headset so that's a minor inconvenience. Speaking of inconvenience, there is no usb/c ports on the right side of the laptop. Other then that, everything else is good.

Great performance for a great price.

I love this laptop and as always I love the people and products at my local Wal-Mart. I could go on about how amazing it is and how much I love it but this is a review and I want to be helpful to those considering this. My Asus ROG Strix G512LW-WS74 came with an 8 core i7 10870h and an RTX 2070m refresh which launched in early 2021 and runs at higher clocks then the original RTX 2070m. The hardware is simply top notch for a sub $1500 machine. The keyboard is great for typing but I must admit I miss a number pad and wish it had one. But, it mus be said this is standard with nearly every serious gaming laptop. In this case it was not a deal breaker and I bought it wanting the maximum CPU and GPU power for my money. The screen is better than anything I have ever had ...Ā MoreI love this laptop and as always I love the people and products at my local Wal-Mart. But, it mus be said this is standard with nearly every serious gaming laptop. In this case it was not a deal breaker and I bought it wanting the maximum CPU and GPU power for my money. The screen is better than anything I have ever had before in a laptop, but it might be a disappointment to some. If you are doing work that requires color accuracy then you want to get a model with an upgraded panel. Likewise if you are a serious gamer and you will not be attaching it to an external display, then you might want the better response time of the model with the upgraded panel. The trackpad is great for a Windows laptop but not as good as the one on the Lenovo Legion 5 that I had before this. The included NVME SSD is a slow Western Digital Blue model and there is no ability to add a standard HDD/SDD. I had nice 2GB model that I wanted to install from my previous laptop. Not a big deal I will simply have to get some more NVME drives and fill up the two additional slots that are available. It's a very well built machine for a plastic laptop with this kind of CPU and GPU horsepower. It has no flex anywhere and just feels solid. At first I was disappointed with the cooling and the loud fans. Then I noticed that the GPU was overclocking to over 1800 Mhz which is more than the desktop RTX 2070 runs at without overclocking. So, the heat and fan noise were easily forgiven when I saw that the overclocking resulted in frame rates closer to a desktop RTX 2070 than a mobile RTX 2070. In summation I love this machine and at the $1349 it's a great value. So, unless you need a screen with amazing color accuracy and a super low response time there is not reason to not consider this laptop.

The Full 'Advantage' ... with a few quirks
1 June 2022

The ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition comes in slightly flashy package, with swappable accent trim, a mostly plastic case and a front oriented light bar & 4-zone, keyboard backlighting arrangement. Absent are a web-cam, a finger print reader and any type of ā€˜soft-touch’ surface treatment you’d likely find on a higher cost, boutique model. Ventilation is seriously directed out of the back of the unit, aided by a big complex of bottom panel openings and left & right intakes, located on either chassis side, up near the screen hinge positions. This is an important facet of this machine as most of the IO ports are located on the rear… so make sure any USB dongles or such have plenty of length to their cables or those ā€˜modules’ will get a constant blast of hot ...Ā MoreThe ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition comes in slightly flashy package, with swappable accent trim, a mostly plastic case and a front oriented light bar & 4-zone, keyboard backlighting arrangement. Ventilation is seriously directed out of the back of the unit, aided by a big complex of bottom panel openings and left & right intakes, located on either chassis side, up near the screen hinge positions. This is an important facet of this machine as most of the IO ports are located on the rear… so make sure any USB dongles or such have plenty of length to their cables or those ā€˜modules’ will get a constant blast of hot air.Overall, I am pretty impressed with the 2021 Strix G15 platform. Coming from a 2019 vintage Zephyrus and knowing how the previous gen Strix machines can come of a tad bit ā€˜gamey’, this year’s models have a more understated and stealthier presentation. Not monochrome mind you, just toned down. The display may seem a bit of overkill, at 300 Hz, but the resulting image @ 1080p is pretty amazing. It is bright in its 300ish Nit’s rating (give or take…) and the contrast rendering, uniformity and detail are right up there with most all the Asus serious gaming laptops I’ve encountered. Could it be brighter? Certainly. I didn’t find myself wanting for more once I got to playing several gaming titles. It looks great. And really, who really expects to be competitive on a 15.6-inch screen? The multi-speaker arrangement in this model is also right up there with other, strong performing Asus laptops. The fans on this machine are well tamed (more on that later…) and gaming in Performance mode on the G15 Advantage is doable with just the internal speakers. Again, not competitively, but casually… it works just fine. There is bass and easily adjustable mid-range and treble gain. Straight out of the box, I found the sound profile to be a bit crispy, but the speaker drivers need to be used for more time before I make a final assessment and the Dolby app assigned to the equalizer tasks is good. So, about those fans. I’ve reviewed, demo’d, toyed with and purchased & returned my fair share of gaming tops over the past 24 months and one thing that still blows my mind is how poorly most companies do ā€˜fan profiles and skip the hard work to reduce or eliminate pure tones or pitchy sound in their fan designs. The fans are pretty much undetectable in day-to-day mundane tasks and simple productivity activities. And when you game, the fans produced a well control ā€˜white noise’ character that I personally find more than just tolerable. So, kudos to the Asus team for all that went into the fan complex, the cooling system and the use of liquid metal. Besides the utter beastly performance of this machine and the mind-blowing battery life, the noise abatement efforts are right up there in the top three facets of why I think this machine is the one to get and the one to beat. The keyboard is good, not what I would call great, but not junk either. I preferring mechanical keyboards lately but the Strix G15 Advantage keyboard is still good. That said, the trackpad is top-shelf. It’s smooth just the way I prefer and is the perfect size. The simplest description is that it just feels Premium.Initial SetupNow for some of the more painful aspects of getting this rig up and running. The initial setup.Word to wise and those in a hurry; when first booting up this machine and personalizing Windows, let all the Asus configuration stuff happen first before going into Windows Update and forcing those installations. I didn’t on my first attempt and all havoc broke out. What resulted was a machine that froze up and needed to be factory, re-imaged - which was a good test of that process – but still unpleasant. Gong back to square one was simple enough and that process worked without a hitch. So, my recommendation is, make sure Armoury Crate, MyAsus AI (the support utility) and all the complimentary pieces are up & running [including the Ryzen/Radeon Software package) before you jump into focusing on obtaining all the latest Windows Updates. I’m not referring to the Store App UWP’s, those will and need to be updated and should do so automatically. Just stay out of the Windows (action center) System settings until everything Asus is up-to-date.And also make sure to update the system BIOS that may be available at the time…Repeat SetupOnce the Strix G15 Advantage was set up and I was loading Steam and Blizzard came folders, I started to experience something else that was odd; the sleep mode. One thing I’ve noticed on all the Ryzen based laptops I’ve had my hands on over the past 12 months or so, is that their Power Profiles are no where near the level of complexity of their Intel counterparts. (See attached photo). What is strange and forced me to do a second, entire Windows setup to makes sure the problem was consistent, was how the Strix G15 Advantage won’t go into sleep mode via the Windows Start Menu button. It will sleep on its own via the Power Plan timers but when I attempt to force a menu activated sleep, it simply returns to the Login In/Lock Screen. The same thing occurs when I attempt to us the dedicated ā€œZā€ (sleep) function key. Doesn’t make sense to me why this is happening but I believe it is a result of the modified AMD structured Power Plan manifests and/or something funky with the BIOS/Drivers.PerformanceNow onto the good stuff…This machine is super quick. Opening applications, messing around in Windows, browsing the web, opening up files; everything is just quick as can be. None of the vastly more expensive gaming machines in the $2000+ category I’ve tried in the last 12 months can hold a candle to this Advantage beast. It smokes everything! And it also does it with nearly imperceivable cooling performance. Now that’s why we want Ryzen, right? I’d also like to mention that contrary to reputable review ā€˜venues’, the Strix G15 Advantage doesn’t have an Intel Wi-Fi module. It has a MediaTek module and it IS Wi-Fi 6 Certified. No other laptop I’ve experienced holds onto and stays right up there with my rated broad-band speed at a distance of ~50 feet, through walls and a door way, like this machine can. Who needs Intel? Who needs Killer? On wired connections, my average yielded speeds are round about 480 Mbit/sec and the Strix G15 Advantage hung in there – consistently – at around 450 wirelessly, no matter what else is going on in my home network environment. So, hats off to MediaTek and Asus!A few words about the software environment. Armouy Crate use to be a real pain but it has gotten much better in 2021 (as experienced on my 2019 Zephyrus…) but on this all-AMD platform, it works really well and I haven’t noticed anything in the way of rogue Win Reliability Error events that were once all too common just a few years back. A-Crate is also pretty straightforward for all the commonly used controls, including turning off that annoying start up ROG Sound and enabling the three-stage, Battery Saver mode for those that primarily use their laptops plugged in. I’ve read complaints about no Mux switch... but honestly… there’s no practical, material benefit to it for most people in this all-AMD environment. Cinebench R23 scores consistently come in well above 14000 points for multi-core rendering and around 1500 for single thread. That multi-core score level is twice the performance of my 2019 Zephyrus.Ryzen FTW!Gaming PerformanceMoving on to gaming, I’ve demo’d a varied set of titles: L4D, MW Remastered, Insurgency Sandstorm and CoD Cold War. All were played at max or very high, game-controlled quality settings and all looked and played absolutely beautifully. Rendering was smooth and detailed, with no stutter or lock ups and the IPS-like panel popped great color gradation and dynamic range. For those that are admittedly buying the Strix G15 Advantage for gaming as their primary use case … get the 1080p configuration.SummaryOverall, I am completely thrilled with the Strix G15 Advantage. It has that Asus build quality that is not easily equaled – even by many more expensive competitors; the bling is subtle yet fun; the audio system blows away most other laptops out there; the on-battery duration IS truly around 10 hours doing more day-to-day things and the cooling system/fan profiles are something to truly marvel. I’m sold on the ā€˜Advantage’ program and believe it foretells great things to come – if these first gen models are any indication. This is truly a multi-purpose gaming laptop for those not needing critically important aspects such as high-end color accuracy or fine detail, as they relate to content creation. As I’ve mentioned, I’ve been through a bunch of gaming notebooks and this is the first one that ā€˜ticks’ all my requirements, exceeded my expectations AND blows my mind in terms of raw performance – all at the same time. At this point, for this amount of money, nothing even comes close to the feature set and performance level of the Strix G15 Advantage.Pros:Top tier Asus build qualityAwesome non-reflective screen with minimal light bleedFantastic cooling system and well tamed fan profiles – even when gamingFull fidelity speakers that do produce bass and can be used while gaming casuallyJust enough lighting bling to satisfy mostSolid selection of ports and ideal port placementStellar 10+ hour battery life for everything, non-gamingBest Wi-Fi 6 I’ve experienced to-dateNotables:Make sure to let the initial setup process complete for all Asus related software & utilities before jumping in and forcing Windows UpdatesCons:Skimpy Power Plan profiles and strange Sleep Mode behavior

[Rewarded Review] Major upgrade from my 11 year old laptop!!!
11 August 2020

I needed to upgrade from my old 11 year old media laptop that finally crapped out on me. I wanted to get a gaming laptop that had high end features and great graphics card and storage, without breaking the bank. I love the sleek design of the laptop and the colbolt black scheme with customizable keyboard and undercarriage color features that are linked to Asus's software. Very easy to use and programable keyboard is perfect for all my gaming layouts using the different presaved or custom profiles. The graphics card has held up well to any game I have thrown at it, even on top settings modes with intense graphics and memory use. I am really impressed with how light-weight and portable it is for a gaming laptop, much more easier to take on the go then my previous ...Ā MoreI needed to upgrade from my old 11 year old media laptop that finally crapped out on me. I am really impressed with how light-weight and portable it is for a gaming laptop, much more easier to take on the go then my previous laptop without losing any power or speed....just some screen size. The ability to be able to upgrade the graphics card, memory, hard drive and customization with other Asus Aura Sync devices to connect and interact, makes this a perfect, above middle class gaming laptop worth the money! Now, for the downside, would have loved to get the higher end model if I had the money which would upgrade me to turbo clocking and more features that were not included. The battery life when not plugged in is not very good, can last a couple hours before going into reservation mode or shutting down completely. Though, There is the option to have it go into full charge mode when you will be using it without a constant power source or you can have it set to battery life saver which will only charge it to 60% to conversafe the life of the battery over time, whcih I felt was a great feature. I was surprised it did not come with better speakers as I have had to connect a speaker for louder sounds or its just to faint to hear them. I also wish it had a webcam built-in, but sadly it does not and it did not come with a plug-in ready webcam like a few of the higher end models. With all the loaded software, the power hitting performance, the portability and the customization tools, this laptop is definitely worth the money and you won't break the bank either. Really happy with my purchase and I would recommend it to others who are looking to upgrade or even switch over brand names.

[Rewarded Review] most powerful laptop I have ever owned,
5 December 2021

Got this machine as an early Christmas present, and freaking rocks! destroys anything i throw at it from PoE to Call of Duty to Warframe, hell it even mines Ethereum at almost 60 MH/s and stays under 60 degrees celsius when I am not gaming! Keyboard is very nice with individual key backlighting and optical mechanical switches. not sure how i would feel about the other display option with this rtx 3080, I opted for the 300 Hz display in Full HD 1920x1080 and it looks amazing higher res may be even better looking but i like the high refresh rate so i went with that. I mean whats the point in pushing 300+ fps if the display cant keep up with it? Overall a kickass machine, the first time I have ever had a top of the line laptop and i gotta say it's like having a portable version of my desktop to take with me to game wherever i want (my desktop is a rog strix e-gaming II with a 7940x a 2080 super and this thing definitely is on par with it when it comes to gaming, if not better) the only negative thing i can even think of to say about it is that it gets pretty warm if i dont let it breathe when pushing it but thats to be expected, would be nice to be able to throw in a 2.5 inch ssd just because i have a few sitting around but there is an m.2 slot awaiting another drive when i need the space enough to buy one to toss in it. its also nice to know i have room to upgrade the RAM in the future but the 16GB it came with is plenty for now. this thing chews through everything i throw at it from streaming music and/or movies while playing online games and downloading dirt from wikileaks to browsing the web for new drink recipes while over at my brothers' poundin beers and grilling burgers watching the game and filling him in on all the research about the globalist trash that needs to be taken out. and with the cold weather coming through i have a space heater the throw on my lap while wrecking the scourge on PoE when i get bored! This thing just keeps on winning!!
