Bought the jacket in Q2 2019. Used it in the city and on the trails. Despite using it carefully (no bushwhacking) and cleaning it accordingly to manufacturer instructions (3 times, with right detergent, ironing to reactivate DWR) the jacket is no longer waterproof. I used my Alpha AR for 2 winter seasons, skiing inbounds, touring and occasional climbing/mountaineering, ~120 days of use. During that time the jacket's performance excelled in every way. Arc'teryx's partnership with Gore-tex resulted in the best shell I have ever owned. The issue is that it doesn't last. I ripped the arm on a tree, the shoulder material delaminated, and the internal layer has worn through in places. All simple problems, I thought would be easily repaired by Arc'teryx and I could be back out there next season. However, there is no warrantee offered, Arc eliminated their repair service (because of covid), and they only will evaluate the jacket based on photos you submit. So glad I found the Alpha AR by chance as where I live Arcâteryx selection isnât great and I didnât want to order from US/ Canada and deal with mail forwarding. As a side note to Arcâteryx, obviously you have shipping restrictions for a reason but itâs very frustrating as a customer when we are trying to remain loyal to the brand but local availability is low to non existent and there are next to no colour choices. Iâm 5â9â/176cm 165lb/75kg relatively athletic with a bit of dad bod cover at the moment. The fit is absolutely brilliant. No matter the layering Iâve got it fits great and while it is obviously roomy with just a base and fleece on it doesnât look ridiculous like the medium Alpha SV did or even the Beta LT to be honest. The material is great, taped seams are so well finished compared with anything else Iâve looked at. Chest pockets are perfect. Weather protection is fantastic, although I havenât had it in the wet or heavy rain I have been in 60-80km/h wind/spindrift and wind chill about -13c up a mountain and it was bomb proof. The Pilot colour... it was a great price and perfect fit but availability is why I ended up settling for a sub optimal colour, conversely it makes it more versatile in its use, not just climbing mountains. Hopefully Arcâteryx will release the Alpha AR pant in some sort of red, blue or yellow/green to allow me to remain visible because I wonât be buying the pants in Pilot also. Overall very happy and while I do wish it was in the thalassa or pulse or even a red itâs still an awesome jacket.

So it was hanging in the wardrobe some years. Iâm wearing it now about a year. I compare it with a xyz-Jacket a bit Iess expensive as the Arcteryx. I wore this Jacket the last 10 years and when the zipper will be repared I Iâll wear it again.What I like on the Arcteryx Alpha AR1. The Jacket fits perfect. When I tried to wear a hat to avoid that issue the hood was disturbing.2. The zippers are stiff to move. If you donât have hands free it is very annoying. You need both hands to open or close them.3. The really good hood is not affixable in length. (I didnât found a way how to do.) It feels like the jacket pulls my head a bit down when walking.What I dislike on my Arcteryx Alpha AR4. Although this jacket has not been used in a hard manner (for what it should be built) and for a long time booth sleeve hems started to break up as you can see on the photos. When I checked the Internet I realized that this problem occurred at other owners too. It is a no go for two reasons. Quality of the expensive product lacks and quality control in factory lacked too.All in all I have mixed feelings. Donât get me wrong. I always feel well protected from weather in this jacket. But at least this is the reason to buy such a jacket and it is a shame for companys if their products donât protect you as expected and they described. Breathing feels not better than in my old Jacket.If I would have to take decision to buy a new Hardshell-Jacket now there are less pros than cons. When I put in the balance that Arcteryx retain using PFC (might be necessary for workers jackets) while competitors started to avoid PFC and also PTFE the product must offer a much more to take decision for Arcteryx.There is another thing that is not an Arcteryx specific and no product review but important for me. Donât pay so much money for marketing, wholesale and retailers. Pay fair wages to the people producing the jackets, avoid countries like china as long they treat their people and environment as they do. This jacket is my go to rain shell for the mountains and riding my bike around town on rainy days. Its lightweight and packable so it can easily be carried at the bottom of my pack for those in case moments of rainfall as well. It has excellent abrasion resistance for mountain travel and climbing excursions so its always with me whenever theres any possibility of rain in the forecast. The oversized hood fits over my helmet which is nice. The pit zips provide air circulation when overheating can be a problem and the dual materials on the arms and shoulders hold up well with heavy packs and rough rock.

It is supposed to be my last resort jacket.I had washed the jacket once with Grangers despite the very limited use (Arcteryx recommends 10-12 days before each wash). The jacket looks and feels new. Despite the water beading on the surface, my midlayer was wet on top of the head, shoulders (I was not wearing a backpack that day), outer arms, upper back and front. This jacket is fine for wind, snow and drizzle but certainly NOT for mountaineering.My first Arcteryx and very disappointed by the quality and service. I have received much better service and quality from other leading brands.

The Alpha AR has really exceeded my expectations for what I want and like out of a rain jacket. It has been so long since I have owned a solid piece of rain gear that I was confident would keep me dry when I needed it to. When it comes to scouting out rapids and waterfalls by the river during the rainy season here in Squamish, it can be next level wet and cold. This is where the Alpha AR really nailed it for me. We spend so much time bushwhacking through some thick BC wilderness that is blanketed with a heavy layer of rainfall and it can quickly soak you from head to toe. Sometimes to get the right angle on a drop we have to get into some thicker/stickier patches of bush. It has been so long since I have owned a solid piece of rain gear that I was confident would keep me dry when I needed it to. When it comes to scouting out rapids and waterfalls by the river during the rainy season here in Squamish, it can be next level wet and cold. This is where the Alpha AR really nailed it for me. We spend so much time bushwhacking through some thick BC wilderness that is blanketed with a heavy layer of rainfall and it can quickly soak you from head to toe. Sometimes to get the right angle on a drop we have to get into some thicker/stickier patches of bush. Combine that with the spray of whitewater and waterfalls onto the banks and youâve got yourself a seriously saturated adventure. This can definitely make or break the day in this situation when you get soaked and are freezing and have to call the day a bit early or arenât lucky enough to be in a position to call the day and you have to suffer through it. Knowing I have this jacket helps me know I wonât have to suffer through anything (with regards to the upper body haha) now I have to get myself a matching pair of rain pants to keep my legs as dry as everything else.Top tier performance and reliability.
