After 16 months of use in a climate controlled IT cabinet, this died. Seems the internal controller went, not the drive itself, which still spins up but only when removed from the housing and connected to a machine directly. Warranty is only 12 months, unlike some other Apricorn drives that have a 3 year warranty. I would recommend paying attention to that as I am not the only reviewer on Home Essentials Direct with an Apricorn drive that died very young.

The drive makes a clicking sound, and my computer will not recognize it. I have other Aegis padlock drives so I know how they work. I have reset the drive, entered admin mode, and set up a user password and received all of the correct flashing red, blue and green lights. But I am not able to go into user mode, and my computer does not recognize that there is a drive attached. I have used a different computer, different USB cable, and different USB port. The drive is no use to me at all now.

I have ordered several of these drives, as I require encrypted hard drives. These work great, are easy to use and super reliable. The only downside is the cost.

Apricorn makes very well-designed and domestically built flash and HD products. Their customer service is also very good (on the occasion I needed it). Their products have consistently great performance and their documentation is thorough and easy to follow. This is my second purchase of this particular product (to expand capacity).Notes:a) I connect this HD to a Mac with a (2.0 3.0 (T3) USB) adapter and the speed is terrific.b) It has a soft, fairly quiet internal fan, probably needed due to the size and encryption level.
I just received this unit and setup was easy. Login is per the keypad on top and all software is encased in epoxy inside the solid aluminum enclosure. Once logged in my brand new windows 7 computer downloads music files at about 70MB/second which is good for an encrypted drive like this. All my pictures also downloaded at about 70MB/second also. You will however not be able to use the windows 7 backup feature with this drive because it is a 4K sector allocation size drive which is the new standard. It will pause during backup and list an I/O error at the time when the backup is attempting to do a system image. Windows 7 uses the old 512 byte sector allocation size. This is a fairly common experience at this time due to the transition from 512 to 4096 sector size. I ... MoreI just received this unit and setup was easy. I use this drive with unison to to sync an NAS drive - I can then take it offsite without worrying about it because it is locked. Locks as soon as it is removed from the usb connection. This is exactly what I wanted and it works great and fast.
The product promises military grade encryption of your data. The company company seems to be small and reletively unkown. Has a third party tested this product to confirm that they've properly designed encryption or are really encrypting in the first place! For all I know the keypad could be a simple on off device that turns on the drive when you enter the right code but does nothing more. The fact that there is no third party review/certification doesn't inspire confidence.
Purchased to host financial records, a better solution than leaving them on my laptop. Very simple to set up, offers a high degree of protection via fast on-board encryption. One nice feature is that it locks itself after 15 minutes of inactivity (preventing unauthorized access automatically). Very easy to setup. Recommended.
I don't normally write reviews, but this drive has given us migraines. I own and IT company that focuses on HIPAA and the healthcare industry. An encrypted backup hard drive is a HIPAA requirement. This drive seemed like an awesome solution. Unfortunately, in just about a year of selling these Apricorn drives, 50% of them have failed. Two were DOA out of the box with clicking hard drives, three failed within a year with I/O device error. Sure we can RMA them, but it's not worth our time or the hassle of two onsite visits and dealing with the return process. I strongly suggest that you avoid this drive. We are going back to Seagate external drives encrypted via software and auto mounted at boot up, since that solution has been working for our clients for over six ... MoreI don't normally write reviews, but this drive has given us migraines. I would highly recommend Apricorn Aegis encrypted hard drives to anyone who wants to protect their data. This is a excellent archive hard drive drive for computer backups APRICORN AEGIS PADLOCK
