Its simple design conceals a number of high-tech advancements in security. The U-lock is classic when it comes to securing bikes, and for good reason. Bought this from my local bike shop when I purchased a Specialized Sirrus Expert for commuting. I park my bike in a locked, caged, bicycle room on campus at UW. Someone was able to get into the room and tried to steal the bike. They destroyed the carbon fiber frame by crushing the top tube, presumably using it as a lever to get the ABUS lock off, but were unsuccessful. The lock and cable held, unfortunately the frame did not. Even the campus police were impressed with the lock's durability. I will definitely purchase another one of these ABUS locks when I buy a new bike.

I read reviews on cables and u locks as I am riding my bike again. The result was that cables are pretty ineffective for those who want to steal a bike quickly. Those who steal regularly will take your bike no matter what you have secured your bike with. I needed something that would put off a "casual" thief but wasn't too heavy to carry in my back pack. On reading, the Abus Ultra 410 U Lock with the 1.2m steel cable seemed ideal. With it I could lock the bike to a pole or fence with the u lock and connect the front wheel (quick release wheel) with the steel cable. It seemed the ideal solution. And it was quite light compared to most good quality u locks. The system weighs 1.29kg. It was Engineered and, I think, made in Germany. The total cost for me was about A$44. I have used the lock since then and it is ideal for my purpose. The bright green makes it stand out and says "I am serious in protecting this bike". There was only one problem. With my two bikes, the frames would not allow me to attach the lock holder as the frames were too thick. So I have to carry in my back pack. Another smaller problem is the size of the u lock. It is not wide enough to go around trees but I can always find a fence of pole near my destination. The length of the u lock means your bike has to be very close to the pole or fence, but that hasn't been a problem for me. But these are due to it being a lighter product with good security. I can highly recommend this product to those who need a good locking system to secure their bikes.

+ Good design, reasonably good product quality. + Reputable make, so its security rating should be genuine. + Cable and bracket make the lock more useful. + Numbered security keys (so save the number in case of losing your keys). - Keys need a bit of a wiggle to fit and turn. - Picture instructions to fit the bracket are only just adequate. * Get the mini version if you can fit it round your bike frame and a stand: lighter and more secure. Get this version if the bike frame's too chunky for the mini.

Does the job but room for improvement
28 January 2023

It does what it says on the tin, although it's important to acknowledge that the cable portion is not going to stop a determined thief. It's their to discourage if you've got quick release wheels. My major criticism of the D-Lock is that it requires fiddling with to get it to fit, every time I use it.

Easy to use, but..
10 November 2021

Actually, the only thing that I don't like much is the weight, it's a bit too heavy. And my bike had this weird form frame which make it even more complicated to carry (I couldn't use the mounting bracket). Regardless, it's just perfect for what what I wanted: commutes to downtown and easy to use/lock down, the additional cable is great for extended protection of the front wheel. If you own a normal hybrid bike or city bike, I would say this is your best bet, but if you're looking to use the mounting bracket on your mtb frame, be sure it's a mostly rounded frame or have space for it in your backpack as I do!

Good but maybe not perfect

I can report some of the same issues others have expressed. Did have one jam up after about a season of use but after switching it out the second one had had no issues at all. Locks and unlocks great every time. Used in all weather and temperatures.Small enough to clip to a bag or tuck into your belt and just big enough to lock my frame and front wheel if needed.Small amount of rattle but I don't notice it when riding.Despite the first mishap still a solid lock for the price.

Good fairly lightweight lock let down by lack of keys
23 June 2017

Pros: Slightly lighter weight than most locks of this kind. Cable supplied for a slight increase in security (but don't rely on this!) Well built and easy to operate. Good value for money (but see keys issue) Cons: the frame clip is poor, allowing the lock to rattle and it loosens, interfering with pedalling. This clip is impossible to fit on a ladies step-through frame with a drinks holder. Most U locks share this problem. I made my own holder that fixes it round the seat post and through the frame. Worst issue is spare keys. Only 2 supplied per lock and spares only available in UK from two specialist dealers who charge almost the same as for the lock! Should have gone for competitor supplied with 5 keys. Overall, a good lock but let down by too few keys and poor ... MorePros: Slightly lighter weight than most locks of this kind. Great small locks
3 July 2021

I'm not using these for cycle commuting, but I bought two for securing my mountain bike with a burly chain (Planet Bike's) to my car's hitch and bike rack. These mini u-lock's are pry resistant, and fit well through the holes in my Subaru's hitch. I use one to secure my rear wheel through the chainstay, pass the chain through the front wheel and frame and then secure the bike to the hitch with the other lock. It's a pretty good system for leaving the bike unattended for groceries or short trips away from the vehicle. The build quality on the locks seems great so far.

Light small lock
16 June 2022

I've been using this lock for over 7 years now, and have owned a few. None have failed. They're fantastic. The size is pocketable if you need, but big enough to lock to most posts. I used to be a bike courier, so I'd like to think I know locks.Yes, it rattles. But it is way lighter than most of the competition, which matters a lot to me. The attaching bracket on one of my 3 locks was tight, so I had to sand it down a bit to slide in easier. The locking mechanism on all of them have been rock solid. I've never had a kryptonite this consistent, they always needed to be lubed up periodically. All in all, it's not perfect, but I keep buying them as it's the best I've found.

Lock jams up, but not all the time
1 June 2022

I bought this less than a month ago. It worked well for the first week but since then, I have had to wrestle with it to get it to open, but not each time (weird). I finally gave up on it yesterday and returned it to MEC. They tested it and of course, it worked fine. I explained that sometimes it popped open easily and other times jammed after which they treated me like I was lying about the problem with the lock. I had to argue to get a refund for it. Not a good look MEC. Anyhow, don't buy this lock. It jams.
