Well that depend on how you plan to use the lens. My intent was to use my Fuji body with this lens for candid street photography, The good news is that this light and compact package is close to ideal for this purpose. At f/8 with the lens set hard against its infinity focus stop, the depth-of-field will safely extend down to 20 feet or so.But what if your main subjects are closer than 20 feet? This is where the 7artisans lens is less that ideal. Since the 7artisans lens focuses down from infinity to 0.6 feet in just about 100 degrees of lens rotation, focusing sharply on objects closer than say 20 feet is quite touchy and really requires using Fuji's focus magnification aid. I also found that the focus scale marks were quite unreliable at distances of a few feet.Ah, but what about just using the depth-of-field scale on the lens barrel to set your hyperfocal distance? Forget about it! That scale is just a purely fictional decoration. For example, if I set the infinity mark at f/8 on the left, the focal point is set to about 3.5 feet (nominal) (but about 1 foot actual) with everything supposedly in focus from infinity down to about 2 feet (nominal). Would that were so!Oh, and by the way, the extreme corners of the image do fall off noticeably in IQ at all apertures. This does not bother me but may bother you.Bottom line? This is a quite decent lens for its price, making it a 4 out of 5 for me It may meet your needs very well as long as you know what you are getting.

Beautiful lens at a fantastic price

This lens is a fantastic piece of glass, especially for those looking so save a couple bucks. The aperture blades make a beautiful bokeh in the background, the f/1.8 allows for a great, shallow depth of field and the click-less aperture ring is such a benefit, in my opinion.I use this lens on the Fuji X-T2 and I couldn't be happier with the clarity and color that this lens brings to the table. I was worried, when I purchased the lens, that the glass would lack clarity and would make the images look flat and unattractive but I was happily wrong. You get what you pay for with this lens. The lens feels like it is made of cheap plastic; indeed it has a plastic lens mount. It is terribly soft, although images from it will yield acceptable snapshots after sharpening in post. The flare is bad enough to make me wonder if it has any coating. The only good point is it is a light lens you can easily drop in a pocket of your jacket, giving you an extra focal length option in the field if you shoot primes.

Fun lens with limited use but well worth the price!
6 December 2020

I would not recommend this lens for landscape photographers, corners are bad, really bad. However the close focusing and bokeh rendering of this lens is fantastic. If this is your thing then this lens is a real value for the money! My copy of this lens has surprisingly nice build quality but is a little fiddly to use only due to its small size. It reminds me a lot of the old Industar 50mm f3.5 but with much smoother focusing. This lens will absolutely create beautiful images if used within its limits. I'd say definitely buy it if your looking for an artsy lens with good subject isolation, nice fall off and big bubble bokeh. Look elsewhere if your looking for a landscape lens on a budget. Hope this helps!

Good optics, mechanics might not be ideal

I have been using this lens for a couple weeks now. The last time I took it out I tried landscape photography. I noticed that the focus tended to be a little unstable: when set exactly, it would shortly thereafter shift just a little, after I removed my hands from the focus ring. This is not a show-stopper, it just means I have to be a little bit more careful while using it. Otherwise clarity and color and bokeh is great, especially for the price. Image sharpness is good across the frame at F8, while center sharpness is excellent even wide open. At wider apertures than F5.6, there is a definite drop in sharpness at the edges of the image. The lens fits my Fuji X-T100 perfectly.I dont think you will find a better value for this price and maybe even several times ... MoreI have been using this lens for a couple weeks now. None in this lens.

Great Lens at a great price
10 August 2023

I used it with a Sony A7iii, for the price this gives extremely nice quality inages and video. Super sharp in the center and begins to get softer around the edges, however I was sort of expecting that. It almost gives the essense of being an antique lens, very good for getting dreamy bokeh in videos. The fact it is a 1.8 aperture lens makes this great at low lighting, I used it to shoot an outdoor event that had a single light source at dusk, the footage looked great. This is a must buy if you are looking to have a variety of spare lense at different focal lengths.

I recently switched from Nikon to Fuji. Missing my Nikkor prime but not being flush with cash after purchasing the Fuji, I started reading about the 7 Artisans lens. Having grown up on film photography and fully manual SLRs, I enjoy manual focusing and manually setting aperture as the process makes the entire photographic experience more immersive. And I have found that the more involved you are in the creative process of photography while taking images, the better your final results are.At $69, this prime is a no-brainer and the best value I've ever seen in a prime lens. It arrived in premium packaging, the lens is of much higher quality than I expected - all metal, finished to a high standard, clean inside and out, markings all correct and the aperture and focus rings operate with well-damped precision. The lens mounted smoothly and it looks terrific on my X-T1 and is featherweight compared to the Fuji 18-55 f/2.8.Initial test shots have exceeded my expectations. Excellent color rendition and contrast, center is tack sharp at f/1.8, creamy bokeh and while extreme corners are not sharp wide open, they are not any worse than my Nikkor prime shot wide open. DOF at f/1.8 is amazingly narrow, far narrower than my old Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 prime. The lens has character - it is not sterile like many technically perfect Japanese lenses. It evokes emotion and feeling. It produces organic images with soul.Test shots are sooc jpegs at f/1.8.Considering that the price I paid for this lens was less than the sales tax on the 23mm Fuji f/1.4 prime, I am simply amazed. I highly recommend this lens and am looking forward to using it for my fine art photography.

Inaccurate aperture markings

For the person who listens to vinyl records, wears a Swiss mechanical watch, likes to take steam powered tourist trains, and drives a car with a stick shift, this could be the perfect lens for the analog future. No electrical contacts, no power drain, totally manual control of aperture and focus distance. However, if you want to go further into the analog world and use an external exposure meter, this is NOT the lens for you. The aperture markings overstate the true aperture by 1-1/2 to 2 f stops. I know because I compared the shutter speed selected by my Sony A6000 to that which would be expected by the reciprocal of the shutter speed rule (correct exposure in normal daylight at 1/shutter speed, f16, and ISO 100). Both tests indicate the aperture is mis-marked by the amount stated above. Thus this lens is usable ONLY with TTL metering, and will overexposed if you set the aperture based on an external meter or based on your experience with correctly marked lens.

Conclusion: This is a very fun lens to have and the experience of using it is generally better than the product of its use. Though images aren't terrible, they're definitely not meant for traditional high quality printing.Pros:- Bokeh is clean, smooth.- Surprisingly sharp. Considerably sharper than I expected at this price. Especially in the middle. Edges aren't bad at all and corners are have significant drop-off as expected, but it's rather impressive on the whole.- Fun. I love manual focus prime lenses. The experience knocks it out of the park for me.- 25mm ( ~37mm on my a6500) is an excellent focal range for me.- Instagram Good = "Edit" your photos and down-res them to 1080x1080 and you'll find they look pretty comparable to images from better ... MoreConclusion: This is a very fun lens to have and the experience of using it is generally better than the product of its use. Especially wide open, it's difficult to absolutely nail the focus when a millimeter of turn pushes the focus multiple meters front or back.- Something's just a little off about the color/contrast. It's hardly noticeable in still images, but I can pretty obviously see issues in video.- Flaring and color fringing are pretty bad. On par with expectations, but expectations were already quite low.- Clickless Aperture is pretty easy to accidentally shift. Even though I do more video than stills, I would rather have it clicked.- Print Bad = Definitely not for high scrutiny use.Final Word: Properly comparing this lens to other lenses is like comparing 30fps to 60fps. If you saw 30fps videos and nothing else, you would think 30fps is perfectly smooth and fine. But once you see 60fps and then see 30fps, it looks choppy and less appealing. In isolation this lens is pretty good, but when compared to expensive lenses, you can definitely see the difference.

IMO this lens on an older M43 pen camera with IBIS is the ultimate discrete walk about setup on the cheap. If you want better than iPhone pro results you will be pleased comparing the results of this lens with even a $100 body from yesteryear. I purchased a used E-PM2 from KEH for little more than a C note. I've got 16MP and two lenses on me at all times. I've also got the 15mm body cap from Olympus (a hard to focus but satisfying lens). When I switch to the body cap lens I can, with a little difficulty, squeeze this small 25mm lens into a pocket. The results belie the diminutive size and I just love it. I find myself leaving my bulky Canon M50 behind in favor of this setup. LOL. Wide open, editing the RAW files in LR, are very useable. My uses are as a walk about, street camera and sometimes food photos, events and family outings where I don't want anyone intimidated by a larger camera and lens.
